The 1990s saw a number of leaps forward in computer generated effects, from Terminator 2: Judgment Day at the beginning of the decade to The Matrix near the end. Hollywood blockbusters reflected the boom in visual effects accordingly and some films hold up better than others – 1995's Jumanji fits right in the middle.
In line with the special effects wizardry that had brought dinosaurs to the big screen in Jurassic Park a couple of years prior, Joe Johnston's wacky fantasy adventure unleashed a jungle on small town America with funny and scary results. With a reboot/belated sequel on the horizon, it's interesting to look back at how this one is more fondly remembered, whether as a visual effects extravaganza or as an action packed family movie.

Forget the Batman vs Superman movie everyone's talking about. What would happen if you threw Rocky Balboa and Raging Bull's Jake Lamotta into the boxing ring to duke it out? That's the tantalising idea at the heart of Peter Segal's comedy Grudge Match, which sees Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro play veteran fighters who strap on their gloves to settle a 30-year rivalry once and for all.
Stallone plays Henry "Razor" Sharp, a shipyard worker who retired from the sport before a proposed rematch with De Niro's Billy "The Kid" McDonnen. Director Segal relays this in the opening moments with a mixture of archive footage and CGI recreations of the two acting icons in their prime. What should be an...

Stallone and De Niro come face to face (again) in Grudge Match. Here's our review...
When Rocky Balboa hit cinema screens back in 2006, there was an incredible amount of cynicism attached to Sylvester Stallone’s return to the cinematic franchise that catapulted his career to super stardom. For many there was easy mileage in making jokes about Stallone’s advancing age, or in accusing him of cashing in on an old brand in a desperate attempt to have one final box office hit, yet his love of the character and the sheer determination to write and direct a glorious last hurrah for the beloved Balboa (well, apart from the upcoming TV series Creed) worked and worked well.
Frighteningly, it’s now been eight years since Sly’s last big screen boxing opus, but he’s proved that punching the living daylights out of things...

In the canon of great boxing movies, there are two which stand alone. One is Rocky, the seminal uplifting story of a Philadelphia boxer who beats the odds to become a champion. The other is Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese’s examination of Jake Lamotta, the boxing wunderkind whose hubris and public indiscretions ultimately became his undoing. The stars of each film – Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro, respectively – face off for Grudge Match, the new boxing comedy from director Peter Segal. Does it live up to the promise of greatness? Sadly, it doesn’t even scratch the surface.
Grudge Match tells the story of Henry “Razor” Sharp (Stallone) and Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (DeNiro), two ageing former Pittsburgh boxers who harbour a deep resentment for each other. After years of not speaking, they are lured back to the ring by the obnoxious son of a former promoter (Kevin Hart) for a...

It’s hard to find moments of levity when you’re starring in a movie with Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone. Somehow we know it’s possible with Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin in their new film Grudge Match. They couldn’t be any more opposite, but as they say, Hollywood breeds strange bedfellows.
A veteran of cinema, Alan Arkin plays “Lightning”, the elderly trainer of Stallone’s Henry “Razor” Sharp. He’s tasked with getting the aging boxer back into fighting shape, and Arkin capitalizes on a watered-down but still fiendishly antagonistic version of the late Burgess Meredith’s Mickey from Stallone’s more notable boxing film, Rocky (although Arkin would have you believe otherwise).
Kevin Hart plays Dante Slate Jr., the son of a former promoter who is looking to make his own way in the world of boxing. It is Slate who conjures up the idea of...

While the movies have brought us many great sports films over the decades, boxing seems to hold a special place in film history, and has brought us some of the true classics of cinema history. And even as boxing has become less popular among the general American public, Hollywood’s love affair with pugilism has kept going strong. The twenty-first century has already brought us such acclaimed boxing films as Ali (2001), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Cinderella Man (2005), Rocky Balboa (2006), and The Fighter (2010). Now, director Peter Segal has entered this particular sub-genre with Grudge Match, a boxing comedy starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. While it certainly won’t be counted among the great boxing films or the great sports comedies, it’s a fun little movie that’s worth a look if you’re interested.

Chicago – Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro – between them they have over 150 film credits in careers stretching back to the 1960s. Two of their most famous roles, boxers Rocky and the Raging Bull, get the full make-fun-of treatment in the Christmas Day Film “Grudge Match.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There are decent laughs in this film – with a bit of scene stealing from the hot comic Kevin Hart – but the film doesn’t reach the contender potential it could have had because Sly Stallone wouldn’t go too far in lacerating his iconic boxing image. However, the film is fun enough and epic enough – the climatic fight scene is given proper gravitas and reverence – to make it a good choice for, as they say, the whole family. Stallone and De Niro are comfortable enough to have a good time, and trained enough as boxers to make it plausible. It’s a film that...

It’s “adult swim” time at the cineplex once again, kids. Hmm, seems like Last Vegas was just a week or so ago. This new flick concerns another couple of post-6o dudes who are trying to recapture some of their “glory days” (cue the Springsteen tune, if we can afford it!). Except one of them was in that earlier flick (he’s having a busy year for a guy past retirement age). This film’ s story plays on the cinematic past of the two main stars. You, see both got Oscar nominations for films set in the world of that “sweet science”, the sport of boxing. Sylvester Stallone grabbed his nom for penning the script for 1976′s Rocky, which spawned five sequels, while Robert DeNiro nabbed his Best Actor Oscar nom and win for playing real-life boxer Jake Lamotta in 1980′s Raging Bull. Now, while both actors shared scenes in Copland,...

If you mention the names Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro and ask what their single best movie each is, eventually you'll come across more than a few people who will name Rocky (any of them, except for the fifth one) or Raging Bull. Those people wouldn't necessarily be wrong either, especially in the context of boxing movies. For a lot of people, the list of best boxing movies is topped one of the Rocky films and Raging Bull.
So when it was announced that Sly and Robert De Niro would be entering the ring once again in a film called Grudge Match, why was there so much concern? Oh, that's because it was going to be played out like throwaway comedy rather than an intense sports movie drama that could have been really great.

Trudge Match: Peter Segal, Cashing Checks
At the end of the day, Peter Segal’s latest directorial effort, Grudge Match, may not be the felonious stink bomb as all signs would seem to indicate, but it most certainly is one jaundiced miasma of rote clichés, segmented together with robotic certainty. On the bright side, rather than formulate another Rocky entry or terrorize us with Raging Bull deux, screenwriters Rodney Rothman and Tim Kelleher at least attempt a new amalgamation of pop culture kitsch with its union of Stallone and De Niro. But with the lead performers’ own dubious reputations for sub-par material working against them, along with a narrative that’s either sputtering along on autopilot or asleep at the wheel, the result is a lackluster gimmick, an instantly forgettable malaise cashing in on preceding run-of-the-mill sports folklore.

Grudge Match, a film Chris Eubank might describe as “a parade of pugilistic perfection” (were he in an alliterative mood), matches up two big-screen boxers in a marketing man’s dream bout. In the right corner is Rocky ‘the Italian Stallion’ Balboa; in the left, Jake ‘The Raging Bull’ Lamotta. There can only be one winner. This new featurette shows Stallone proving that he can still float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, seven years after his last action in the ring with Rocky Balboa. brightcove.createExperiences(); The movie follows two old school boxers, both of whose careers peaked in the 1980s, reunited for one final, epic showdown. The fight is the brainchild – well, walletchild – of boxing promoter Dante (Kevin Hart), who spots an opportunity to reunite bitter old rivals Billy ‘The Kid’ McDonnen (De Niro) and Henry ‘Razor’ Sharp (Stallone), who traded blows and championship belts before...

The men who starred in two of the greatest boxing movies ever made are putting on the trunks again, despite their advanced ages. Sylvester Stallone will box Robert De Niro in Grudge Match.

Yesterday, we had yet another still from the Stallone/De Niro fight comedy Grudge Match. Now we have the first trailer and it’s pretty much what you would expect from two iconic but geriatric fighters.
The film centers on Razor (Stallone) and The Kid (De Niro), who come back together 50 years after their last fight through the machinations of Dante Slate Jr. (Kevin Hart), a fight promoter. Slate initially just wants the pair to do motion capture for a video game, but when a fight breaks out between them he has the brilliant idea to put them in the ring again and promote it as a grudge match.
The trailer is chock full of ‘old men fighting’ jokes that are humorous but likely to wear thin if they go on for too long. Furthermore, a few shots recall scenes from both Rocky and Raging Bull, which is to be expected.

Here is the first trailer for director Peter Segal’s (The Longest Yard) upcoming comedy Grudge Match. It’s Sylvester Stallone vs. Robert De Niro, Rocky Balboa vs. Jake La Motta, or movie reference vs. movie reference. I wish this was a drama, Stallone and De Niro could have easily pulled it off. Now we are getting a lukewarm dream movie at best. I assume Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin steal most of the scenes, so that’s promising.
The film also stars Jon Bernthal, Kim Basinger, and Camden Grey.

While the second image from Sylvester Stallone/Robert De Niro pugilism pic Grudge Match arrived earlier (that can be found, along with the first, in a gallery lower down the page), the trailer has now stepped into the ring. Take a look. Grudge Match follows what happens when two old school boxers, whose careers peaked in the 1980s, are brought back together for one final, grand slam fit of fisticuffs. It’s all the idea of boxing promoter Dante (Kevin Hart), who spots an opportunity to reunite bitter old rivals Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (De Niro) and Henry “Razor” Sharp (Stallone), who traded blows and championship belts before Razor announced his retirement before a big deciding match. Before they get back in the ring, though, the pair meet while filming motion capture scenes for a new boxing game, and the old conflict comes bubbling back to the surface. Soon, the...
