With a title like The Hoot Owl, I was expecting a film with the Texan cousin of The Owlman from Lord of Tears and The Black Gloves, or maybe the owl costumed killer from Michele Soavi’s Stagefright. As it turned out this was more like The Hills Have Eyes meets The Evictors than any of those films.
The Hoot Owl begins with clips of a man and a very pregnant woman fleeing something. First in an SUV, then on foot. The guy gets killed and we cut away as the woman tries to hide.
Scott and April have bought a house, apparently sight unseen, out in the middle of nowhere. And, along with Scott’s buddy Drew and April’s sister Suzy are...

Writer/director and seemingly one-man filmmaking factory David Ryan Keith was previously responsible for two films I absolutely adore – 2017’s Ghosts of Darkness (Still yet to receive a UK physical release) and last years The Dark Within. But prior to those he made his second feature, The Redwood Massacre, an old-school slasher movie shot in Aberdeen (of all places) that didn’t exactly set the world on fire on release – it has its fans yes, but its not one of those must-see genre films… Which is why it was surprising to see, some 6 years after that films release, we’ve got a sequel in Redwood Massacre: Annihilation!
Twenty years ago at the infamous Redwood Farm, the owner went mad and killed his family and himself. Shrouded in urban legend ever since,...

The Owlman has become something of an internet cult figure over the last couple of years, with his epic reign of terror on unsuspecting Scottish explorers going seriously viral. The character of the Owlman originally appeared in the indie horror film Lord of Tears back in 2013, directed by Lawrie Brewster. The film itself was well received by fans and critics alike, but the Owlman’s popularity has grown way beyond his indie roots into the realm of internet folklore. Like his earlier counterpart and some would say distant cousin, Slenderman, the Owlman has captured the imagination of the horror community, spawning new stories, fan theories, costumes and even tattoos!
Now, you can possess your very own Owlman in the form of a Limited Edition action figure being sold through Kickstarter. Limited to just 150 exclusive signed figures, the release will help fund the completion of the team’s next film The Unkindness of Ravens.

Lord Of Tears is the psychological horror film debut by Scottish director Lawrie Brewster that blends a touch of Lovecraft with a sprinkling of Poe and the resulting brew proves to be a startling look at the disturbing Scottish urban legend.
The death of his mother sees James (Euan Douglass) inherit a spooky ancient house surrounded by the Scottish moors. Disturbed by his mother’s last words, a warning for him to never return there due to a childhood trauma, and plagued by some rather unsettling nightmares featuring the disturbing entity known as the Owl Man, James delves into the brutal and shocking past that hides a twisted history.
Lord of Tears is unique for the fact that it goes for something new that audiences haven’t encountered before and it all works to tell an engaging story around it. Remember the first time you saw,...

It takes a lot of effort to make any kind of worthwhile indie horror film, but one cannot help but think it takes extra effort, plus a lot of focus and determination, to make a calm, quiet, sedate, and exceedingly "old-fashioned" indie horror film like the Scottish import Lord of Tears. If you're working on a conventional stalk / slash / scare piece of horror cinema, you know what you need: stalking, slashing, scaring, and maybe a surprise or two. Most horror fans would be relatively pleased with that.
But if your goal is to pay homage to the old-fashioned Gothic tales that take place in haunted mansions -- and do it in such a moody, deliberate, and (dare I say) subtle fashion -- then you're clearly trying to appeal to a slightly more patient and open-minded horror fan. In other words, Lawrie Brewster's Lord of Tears won't exactly blow your speakers off,...

Lord of Tears is an independent horror film directed by Lawrie Brewster that will be hitting the festival circuit later this year. Their goal was to create a movie that had more of a classic feel, similar to The Wicker Man and The Haunting, and we thought readers might be interested in learning more. If you’d like an early look at the movie, we have a brand new trailer:
“Baldurrock House has a dark reputation. Built on the site of a pagan shrine, the crumbling mansion in the Scottish Highlands holds many disturbing secrets.
When troubled teacher James Findlay begins having visions of a nightmarish owl man, he returns to Baldurrock, his ancestral home, in search of answers. There, he meets Evie Turner, a beautiful young American woman who helps him to unravel the mysteries of the house and the forgotten years he spent there as a child.
