We are currently in the midst of an international Kaiju renaissance of sorts. Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award for its visual effects and was a hit across the globe. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was number one in the American box office for a second week in a row. And though he’s certainly “King of the Monsters,” Godzilla isn’t the only giant creature to get the spotlight. With the release of the Kaiju No. 8 anime, based off the wonderful manga by Naoya Matsumoto, the audience for stories of mysterious gargantuan creatures will grow even wider. But even if they don’t necessarily fit into the Kaiju Eiga (monster movie) subgenre of science fiction, the potency of the Kaiju has been explored in anime over and over again. There is a power to the idea of a mammoth monster with god-like strength, one that often...

Television has long ridden the coattails of cinema when coming up with new programming, serializing popular genres like Westerns and Crime Thrillers since its very inception. However, the obvious budgetary limitations of TV production mean that certain kinds of stories are less suited for the small screen. Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to live in a time when technology and the streaming wars have finally caught up to film when it comes to producing the type of long-form content we’ve always yearned for.
Case in point, Legendary and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters achieved the unthinkable by bringing blockbuster-worthy Kaijus to the small screen at a scale we’ve never seen before. And though the show has already aired its finale, I know that Kaiju fans are likely still clamoring for more TV-based monsters, so we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six TV shows to watch after Monarch.

With consecutive releases in the last couple of years, Netflix has amassed quite a number of kaiju-oriented pieces of content and, as a result, multiplied the count and types of monsters in its overall kaiju catalog. The Godzilla anime movies and series presented some of his iconic adversaries in a revamped look, while the Kong animated series introduced gigantic versions of tropical creatures as Titans; therefore, it was intriguing to see how the makers of Gamera approached his lore. In the animated venture debut of Gamera, all of his Showa-era kaiju enemies were introduced in the first season itself, and although their appearance and origin story were somewhat tweaked to match contemporary sensibilities, the creatures retained the essence of their original counterparts.

Following an extensive absence, the iconic monster Gamera returns in Kadokawa's latest anime, “Gamera Rebirth,” directed by Hiroyuki Seshita and with animation by Engi. The show's director previously co-directed the “Godzilla” anime trilogy with Kobun Shizuno, a series of films that had good ideas but fell short in their execution due to poor writing and were aesthetically underwhelming. Sadly, “Gamera Rebirth” doesn't fare much better, being a less-than-grand comeback for the giant turtle that's narratively flat and visually ugly.

In the six-decade-spanning lore of Gamera, the recently released Netflix anime series Gamera Rebirth holds a special place for a number of reasons. In the sense that it is the character’s first animated release, it is also the first Gamera-oriented venture to be released in the Reiwa era, and with a major worldwide release after decades, it also acts as an introduction for the character to a vast portion of the global audience who aren’t that familiar with the intricacies of the kaiju subgenre. The first season has already taken kaiju fans by storm, and even for the general audience, it has acted as a neat first chapter of Gamera’s expansive lore.
Spoilers Ahead

Netflix’s latest anime series, Gamera: Rebirth, features our favorite turtle Kaiju from Japan, and he’s back yet again, this time in a 1989 setting, to protect the world from a horde of monsters. Although we all know, how Kaiju movies go, the anime takes the time to focus on a theme that’s usually pushed to the backseat in such action-based anime: friendship. Throughout the six episodes, the theme of friendship is presented repeatedly to the viewers and in multiple ways, proving to us that it’s one of the most important values that we must possess and that it’s what separates us from the monsters that wreak havoc on people. Here’s a detailed analysis of how friendship becomes a significant theme in Netflix’s Gamera: Rebirth.
A common theme in Japanese ‘shounen’ anime is the importance of friendship and how it’s all-encompassing and all-pervasive in the lives of the protagonists.

By now, anime lovers around the world are probably done binge-watching Netflix’s latest animated series, Gamera: Rebirth. Set in 1989, a group of sixth graders finds themselves between a horde of monsters and a massive turtle-shaped guardian that’s determined to protect humanity against the oncoming hordes of enemies. Spanning six episodes, the show makes for a very entertaining watch, and it’s definitely something that original lovers of the turtle Kaiju will love. With season 1 done and dusted, it’s time to debate whether we shall see a second season of the show, given some very loud Easter eggs and clues have been dropped towards the end of the series. Here’s a discussion on what the chances are of a new season of Gamera: Rebirth happening any time soon.
In the final episode of Season 1, Gamera is found to be critically injured with over 100 broken bones, as his pulse rate steadily drops.

The conception of Gamera, the giant turtle kaiju, might have been inspired by a rival studio’s (Toho’s) much-popular iconic monster, Godzilla, but defining trait-wise, he shares more similarities with another kaiju genre legend, the benevolent, gentle giant, Ultraman. This was a result of gradual character arc progression through the Showa and Heisei eras, a fact that has been duly respected in Netflix’s latest anime, Gamera Rebirth.
After staying in ignominy for so long, the fan-favorite friendly monster finally has his chance to shine, and Gamera Rebirth doesn’t skimp on presenting the opportunity through riveting visuals, an inspiring background theme, spectacular monster battles, an emotionally grounded human story, surprising twists, and adhering to the lore accuracy by humanizing the titular monster. With the only major drawback being the sketchy explanation of the central lore, the series still manages to become the best kaiju-related content Netflix has produced in recent years.

Hiroyuki Seshita’s Netflix-Series Gamera -Rebirth- might seem like just another Kaiju movie from Japan, if you’re unfamiliar with the premise. Still, the ones who’ve followed Gamera’s story, they know he’s a massive turtle that started off as a monster to the Japanese people, but has since then mended his ways to become their protector. Not only does the Godzilla-inspired Kaiju appear every time Japan is threatened by a catastrophic threat, but he ensures that he wins every single time, thanks to his Goliath-like body and unbelievable powers. In the latest Netflix-Series set in 1989, Gamera returns one more time, seemingly out of nowhere, to protect a bunch of kids when terrifying monsters start preying on the city. Here’s a detailed review of the first season of the show and why you should probably watch it at the earliest.

One of the greatest underdogs in daikaijū history is a turtle. To be more exact, a giant turtle who breathes flames, flies by jet propulsion and, most importantly, protects mankind from other colossal monsters. And after a lengthy absence on screen, the herculean turtle Gamera is back in an animated series called Gamera Rebirth. Netflix has gifted eager fans an exciting new story that demonstrates the titanic turtle’s appeal and extends his legacy.
While Gamera isn’t exactly unknown by the masses, his presence is, for the most part, limited to the East. There is also the undeniable fact that Gamera is overshadowed by his clear inspiration and pop-cultural counterpart, Godzilla. Between these two Japanese icons, though, Gamera has had a tougher time overcoming his past. An acclaimed ‘90s trilogy of films, one that reimagined Gamera as a serious antihero, was directly responsible for the monster’s critical reevaluation.
