Last week, we had fun chiming in on how Sundance 2016 might look like with our Sundance predictions list. Our series was exactly one short from the promised 75. We decided to switch things up this year. Our last pick is reserved for what is a next to impossible, needle in the haystack guess at what films might break into the short film sections. Out of the 8000 plus submissions the Sundance Short Film programmers will receive, they’ll end up selecting a little less than a hundred short films. Here are some ideas as to who and what could show up.
The Bulb and The Procedure
No stranger to Park City, Calvin Reeder has supplied the fest with features such as The Oregonian (2011), The Rambler (2013) and could very well bring this Kickstarter pairing to public access television blitz and X-Files love. Production wrapped in August. Actors Linas Phillips and Christian Palmer star.

Opening on August 28th is director Craig Zobel’s Z For Zachariah. In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. The film stars Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Having its initial screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Sasha Bronner of the Huffington Post wrote, “Zobel balances danger, suspense and the more delicate nuances of love expertly, leaving us unsure of both the threats outside the house as well as the danger within.”
The film features a score composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance,...

Varèse Sarabande will release the Z For Zachariah – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally August 28 and on CD on September 4, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance, Manson Family Vacation).
“This is my second time working with Craig Zobel, so our director-composer language is pretty well developed,” explained McIntosh. “With our last collaboration [Compliance], the ensemble was super minimal, super biting, but minimal. This time we wanted to push ourselves with the score and it’s thematic development. Really go for it, you know? Though it is a chamber work, we wanted the sound to be full and orchestral.”
McIntosh had the opportunity to write for organ in a scene where Margot Robbie’s character plays the instrument on screen. “We knew that we needed to get the tone of this right. It needed to feel like a timeless hymn and also be a defining theme for Ann.

Underground movies don’t typically lend themselves to commercial interruption, what with their narrative experimentation and their devotion to artistic sensibilities over more profitable concerns. Plus, home media viewers are becoming more accustomed to streaming business ventures that are based financially solely on subscriber fees and not advertiser dollars, e.g. Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Still, there might be a time when a home viewer will be in the mood for something a little more off the beaten path and not want to pay for an additional subscription over what is most likely an outrageous Internet bill — and want to view that off-beat media legally.
So, in that scenario, sometimes Hulu becomes a good option for viewing an oddball movie that screened at an underground film festival — if one doesn’t mind the intrusive ads. Below are five incredible flicks that deserve to be seen, no matter what the option is.

I feel like it was just yesterday that I was talking to Leigh Whannell about Insidious: Chapter 3 at SXSW, when all we knew was that Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne weren’t going to return, but since then the project has received nothing but good news. First it was announced that directorial duties would stay in house with Leigh Whannell, then future Jem and the Holograms star Stefanie Scott joined the cast, and today brings more casting news in the way of a leading man.
Taking to the Twittersphere today, Leigh Whannell himself announced that actor Dermot Mulroney will star in Insidious: Chapter 3, making for a choice that many genre fans should love. While audiences will know Mr. Mulroney from recent films like The Grey and August: Osage County, horror fans should remember films like Stoker and The Rambler. Frank Dillane will star in Bow Street Films’ drama featuring music from renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang.
Catherine Jarvis will direct from her screenplay based on Peter Goldsworthy’s book of the same name about the battle of wits between an aspiring young pianist and his enigmatic Viennese teacher. Casting is underway for the role of the teacher known as the Maestro.
Production is set to begin in spring in northern Australia and Austria. Daniel Harvey and Bow Street Films partners Joe Jenckes and David Dickson are producing.

It’s a major vote of confidence when a festival, such as Sundance, happens to be filled almost exclusively by world premieres and then allows for a film to crack the line-up five months after premiering elsewhere. Thus was the case for Gareth Evans’ The Raid: Redemption. It kicked-butt at Tiff, before finding a slot in Park City and despite the very recent Sony pick-up, this action-thriller also looks primed for a January showing. Production talk took place not much time after the film’s international release and it commenced in January of this year. If the first installment was over the top, I can only imagine this getting incrementally better with each chop, kick, stab and punch.
Gist: A sequel that literally picks up where the first installment ends, this follows Rama (Iko Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in...

Best known for kick-starting careers of up-and-coming filmmakers, Park City still makes room for first time directors pushing north of a ripe old age north of 50. Writer of unknown entities America So Beautiful (2001) and Circle of Eight (2009), Brian Horiuchi’s (shot in Detroit of 2012) Parts Per Billion has got a Sundance parka friendly cast (comprised of Teresa Palmer, Penn Badgley, Josh Hartnett, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson with legends Frank Langella and Gena Rowlands). This is surely in completion stages.
Gist: The story of three couples dealing with a reality-shaking event that threatens to tear them apart. Inspired and sometimes blinded by their love, Len (Josh Hartnett), Mia (Rosario Dawson), Andy (Frank Langella), Esther (Gena Rowlands), Anna (Teresa Palmer) and Erik (Penn Badgley) are as flawed and beautiful as any of the billions who are facing this human-made biological disaster.

Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional (the Cinematheque) hosted the final press conference of Feratum 2013, with the festival's director Miguel Angel Marín leading the panel that revealed the second wave of films (the out-of-competition selection) and full details on the visit of José Mojica Marins (Zé do Caixão/Coffin Joe). Feratum 2013 kicks off on October 3 with the screening of Calvin Reeder's The Rambler. As a cool fact, Ulises Guzmán, director of Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro and Feratum programmer, presented The Rambler paraphrasing an extract from Chase Whale's Twitch review! "If David Lynch and David Cronenberg teamed up with Werner Herzog early in their careers and made a movie together, it would have been Calvin Reeder's The Rambler." It sure looks like a killer opening film, but perhaps...

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

There's nothing wrong with making a movie that deals heavily with surrealism, but if it doesn't have any real plot, point, or larger idea behind it all, what is it we're supposed to glean from it? That's the problem that plagues Calvin Reeder's The Rambler, which is aptly named but beyond that holds nothing of value artistically or as a form of entertainment. It's an idea that isn't really developed in a coherent way and so it just has long passages of nothingness broken up with shots of strange, horror-inspired chaos. Had Reeder spent a little more time crafting a plot around the idea and its "twist", if we can even call it that considering the film all but states what's going on once we meet a particular character, then maybe The Rambler might have something to reward viewers for their patience. As is, it uses up time and gives nothing in return.

The Rambler – A man who knows not where he’s going, or what to expect, yet he blindly follows the road ahead and every adventure it may bring. He doesn’t have a purpose, a care in the world, a destination, or even a good reason for the life he leads, he just, well, he just is. Sounds like a kooky premise for a film, eh? A mysterious man who wanders from city to city, getting in to all sorts of trouble just for the sake of weirdness? Well, yes and no. Yes in the sense that abstract film watchers absolutely have one of the strangest stories I’ve ever witnessed to indulge in, but no in the sense that we never know what the hell is actually going on. I mean, this “Rambler” doesn’t give a shit about his life, why should we?

Likely the oddest road movie you'll ever see, The Rambler stars Dermot Mulroney, of late taking on some bold and unlikely roles, as The Rambler, a man recently released from prison who is making his way to his estranged brother's ranch in Oregon. Along the way he encounters a number of interesting characters including a scientist type who claims to have a machine that will read your dreams and transfer them to VHS. There's also a girl who keeps haunting The Rambler's dreams. Or perhaps it's his reality; I honestly don't know. [Continued ...]...

Aimlessly Devoted To You: Reeder Culls More Stars and Less Sense for Sophomore Film
More proof that horror as a genre has been hedged out of midnight movie programming in favor of meandering strangeness is The Rambler, the sophomore feature of Calvin Lee Reeder. Rather than expanding on the mindf*ck bizarro-world shtick that characterized his polarizing 2011 debut, The Oregonian, Reeder seems more eager than ever to agitate, confound, and blow through our conditioned notions of film narrative. Fans of his first film can rejoice, but the rest of us should be praying for the return of David Lynch. Films by directors such as Reeder, who is obviously influenced by the likes of the grand master himself, only highlight how genius someone like Lynch is at making the grisly and bizarre as compelling as it is incomprehensible.

Sundance is always on the move. Skywalker and George Lucas himself are refocusing on the indies and choosing sound design as their point of entry.
Sundance Institute and Skywalker Sound recently announced that the Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Labs at Skywalker Sound will take place at Skywalker Ranch in 2013 and 2014 and also listed the artists that will participate in the 2013 Labs. This is the first time the two organizations will collaborate to support independent filmmakers and film composers and marks a significant expansion of the Institute’s existing Composers Labs to include sound design.
The Institute has hosted its Composers Labs at Sundance Resort for fiction feature films since 1999 and documentaries since 2005, allowing composers and independent filmmakers to collaboratively explore the process of writing music for film. Fellows also participate in workshops and creative exercises under the guidance of leading film composers and film music professionals acting as Creative Advisors.
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Hosting the Composers Labs at Skywalker Ranch allows an expansion of the program to include sound design, giving further insight into the powerful ways that sound and music can impact independent films. We are deeply grateful to the Skywalker team for working with us to provide our Fellows with the tremendous benefit of accessing this legendary facility”
Josh Lowden, General Manager of Skywalker Sound, said, “We’re very excited to formalize this relationship. Sundance Institute is virtually synonymous with independent film, and Keri and her team have done an amazing job to honor the Institute’s legacy. Twenty-five years ago Skywalker was founded by a filmmaker for filmmakers, and we have never forgotten our roots. We continue to believe in independent filmmaking, and are thrilled to deepen our relationship with the Institute by hosting these Labs at Skywalker.”
The Composers Lab for fiction feature films is a joint initiative of the Institute’s Film Music Program and Feature Film Program, and the Composers Lab for documentaries is hosted by the Film Music Program and Documentary Film Program and Fund.
Peter Golub, Director of the Sundance Institute Film Music Program, said, “Skywalker Sound is a leader in the field of post-production and sound design, and their world-class facilities offer the ideal environment for our Composers Labs. Lab fellows will have access to Skywalker’s sound designers and mixers for ongoing collaboration, as well as the state-of-the-art facility during their stay.”

Judging from the slick production values, the leading name actor, the eye-catching poster art, and the stock horror trailer, one might glean the false impression that The Rambler, Calvin Reeder’s sophomore film, might be a more commercial affair than his micro-budget 16mm debut, The Oregonian. But make no mistake, though The Rambler finds Reeder painting with a larger canvas, the film is just as bold, hallucinatory and unrepentantly experimental as any of his previous work. Based off the 2008 short of the same name, The Rambler follows a taciturn guitar-slinger (Dermot Mulroney, taking the role on from Reeder who played …...

I sadly missed Calvin Reeder’s The Rambler when it played at Sundance this January, but the film is having a theatrical release starting June 7 (at the reRun Theater!) so I will be checking it out very soon. This first trailer for the film certainly has whetted my appetite even more, and confirms just how crazy and out there Reeder’s movie really is.

Never thought I'd see the day when a Calvin Lee Reeder film would end up on Blu-ray, but here we are. On June 25, Anchor Bay will release Reeder's Sundance and SXSW audience-dividing nightmare, The Rambler, on Blu-ray and DVD. I just caught the film at Dallas Iff last week, and it looks pretty fantastic on the big screen, so I'd imagine it'll look amazing in HD as well. An amusing note to me is the fact that Dermot Mulroney's name on the cover is at least as big as the title of the film. That's the kind of star power we're dealing with!In addition to this home video release, The Rambler will see limited theatrical release in North America on June 7th. No word on...

Films that are submitted to festivals come with many questions. Will my film be accepted? Will people be interested in watching it if it is? Will it get distribution? What will happen if it does get distribution? But these questions are also what make film festivals so exciting – the great unknown and all the possibilities it contains. This year’s Sundance Film Festival gave festival attendees (and soon audiences all over) many different films from comedies to dramas to horror. Signing up to work on an independent festival film can end up being a labor of love, but it can also open doors and catapult otherwise unknown talent into the spotlight. The road to Sundance has been seen through the eyes of writers, directors, and actors (which can be found on the Sundance website), but I wanted to look at the process from the composer side of things and was lucky enough to speak with not just...

Giant alien spiders attacking Los Angeles, mysterious strangers, supernatural phenomena, and a vampire who falls for a screenwriter are just some of the strange and fascinating SXSW picks for their popular Midnighters program.
“We work year-round searching for films that will wow our audiences at Midnight. This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW,” said SXSW Senior Programmer & Operations Manager Jarod Neece in a press release announcing the lineup, Wednesday. “Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f—-, we hope there’s a little something for everyone.

...and yes there is more movie sauce to pour over the BBQ that is SXSW next month. After firming up their main slate last week, the folks in Austin have revealed their Midnighter line-up and there may be more than one worth losing some sleep for. Rob Zombie's "The Lords Of Salem," the hotly buzzed "V/H/S/2" (with a new, less clever title than the original "S-vhs") and the latest from "Splice" and "Cube" director Vincenzo Natalie are all set to be unveiled, the latter as a World Premiere. Other titles of note include the talked about "You're Next," Xan Cassavetes' "Kiss Of The Damned," "The Rambler" with Dermot Mulroney and more. Lots more docs, student films and music videos, so see what else is headed to Texas below. SXSW runs from March 8-16. Starting production this week in The Raid 2: Berandal, the sequel to the Indonesian action hit The Raid: Redemption, which is one hell of a film. One of the biggest success stories over the past year and half has been Gareth Evans’ The Raid, released as The Raid: Redemption in the Us. So naturally, there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the sequel, The Raid 2 (released as The Raid 2: Berendal in Indonesia).
The original film debuted at Tiff back in September 2011, won the Midnight Madness Award, and went on to theatres in the spring of 2012. And since then, it’s gained pretty much overnight cult status as one of the best action/martial arts films in recent memory.
Production has officially begun, with Gareth Evans once more directing from his own script, and leading man Iko Uwais returning to take the lead.

At first glance, The Rambler (Dermot Mulroney) seems like a character Sam Shepard might have played several years ago. A tough-as-nails, blue collar type, we can only assume that his internal soundtrack is a mix of murder ballads performed by Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. The Rambler has not had an easy life thus far, and his recent time in prison was obviously hard on him. You see, The Rambler is a rambling man. He is a man of the highway, ain't nobody gonna to keep him in one place for very long. Soon after his release from prison, The Rambler is on the road again. He heads towards Oregon, presumably to help his brother break in some new horses, but realistically it is just a temporary destination. The Rambler's journey to the Pacific Northwest is a rambling and meandering one, leaving much to the fate of the random...
