Benny is a good side character
CubsandCulture31 August 2020
There's not a ton of episodes that focus on the Benny-Dean friendship but of the few that do are all entertaining. Olsson was a good choice to play opposite of Ackles and the episode is at its best when it is about them. The Sam and Amelia stuff is generally OK but there is a rote vibe to much of those scenes. This has got to be Edlund's most conventional script with barely a whiff of his individual zaniness. In the end this episode is solid filler.

Benny and Dean And twilight?
shwetafabm24 June 2020
I like the relationship of Benny and Dean. Dean's even kinda sweet to him, all concerned. Benny seems like an interesting enough character Sam's reaction is understandable Dean couldn't give him space that time he went to hunt Amy, the whole thing is similar

Uneven and painful to watch at times
readonly-2620418 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, let's start with Benny and Dean. I think they have great chemistry and they obviously have a bond forged in literal life/death situation. I hope we can see more of these two together.

Sam and Amanda, I can not believe a more boring and lacking of chemistry as these two together (oops, I forget Sam with Ruby 2 was pretty horrible but that was more on how terrible an actress Gen Padalecki is) this was just such a lousy story line and totally unbelievable. And I am so tired of Sam acting as if he never had normal--I guess Jessica has been completely forgotten.

I hope the episodes improve because quite honestly the flashbacks stop because that is just lousy and unimaginative story telling.

So far, Definitely The Best Episode of Season 8
serbian_00731 October 2012
What can I say, the episode has everything: romance, bromance, drama, and action thrills to get your blood pumping. The episode had everything that originally hooked me to Supernatural. This episode is more like the Supernatural I have grown to love. What worked: -Loved the flashbacks to purgatory -Benny is awesome and very bad ass -A few good laughs What did not work: -How can Dean sneak up on vampires if they can hear a human's beating heart blocks away? It doesn't make sense in light of previous episodes. Still a 10/10! Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Go Supernatural!

Good

Warning: Spoilers
This was a good episode. I liked how it expanded on Benny's character and showed that he and Dean are actually friends. Vampires using boats to hunt was also interesting and slightly clever. The only problem I had was with the flashback transitions. This episode, like the previous ones have Sam and Dean staring off into the middle distance. There're better and more seamless ways to flash backwards.

The best episode of season 8 if not one of the best ever.
robertmaybeth-159-42644728 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is an extraordinarily revealing episode as there are several fascinating back-stories slowly being told via flashback. We learn a great deal about Sam and Dean and how they spent the year Dean was in purgatory (after Dean winds up there after killing the head of the Leviathins Dick Roman).

In SPN, the angel Castiel describes purgatory as the place between heaven and hell where vampires, werewolves, Leviathins, and other monsters go when they die. But Dean is not alone in Purgatory - Castiel is sent there too. Their lives in purgatory consist in alternately fighting off and fleeing from the monsters there. In the process, Dean meets a "good" vampire, Benny. After saving Dean's life from one of the monsters, Benny tells Dean he's figured out a way to escape purgatory, but only flesh and blood humans can do it. But even though Benny is no longer human, he figures he can somehow piggy-back onto Dean and escape too. But when Dean (and Benny) finally meet up with Castiel, he tells Dean he won't be able to escape purgatory with them as he's an angel - but Dean refuses to admit defeat and believes they'll find a way to get Castiel out somehow.

This is an excellent episode start to finish, and one not to be missed!

Terrific Ty Olsson
rich-fouts25 May 2019
Benny (played by the very versatile, talented Ty Olsson) calls on Dean in his time of need as he ventures back to his maker. We finally get some insight into Benny's backstory which I found fascinating (Vampirates). The title of this episode is very fitting. Dean feels obligated to the man that led him to purgatory's escape hatch (and we see the complexities of Benny's other relationships, especially Andrea). But what is so good about this segment is Olsson's immersion and authentic portrayal of this unique vampire. Good ending where both Sam and Benny show their trust in Dean for differing but ultimately the same suspicion.

Show goes to nowhere
hp1993-739-94778513 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well...I really think that the eighth season is really Road to nowhere. New friend of Dean had a lot of potential..But the writers gave him a totally bad romance story and his vendetta plan.

I'm starting to think that the writers went mad - Vampires got the instinct of sensing human hearts beating. Obviously not in this case. The "Old man" with no charisma. Benny's love with no charisma...

Prophet of the Lord ran away - so now hunters are dependent on him and it's more about the Prophet than the Winchesters. They don't know what to do so how about ... Dean goes away from Sam, trying to help Benny.

Meanwhile Sam remembers Amelia. For God's sake.. what was that? Pardon me, but the colors, brightness, dialogues...It all created the atmosphere of a very cheap porn! I didn't know whether to start laughing or cry. Repairing sink? Oh, come on!!! It's worse than the soap operas...

Dean now really seems like a man who'd lost everything, including his brain...His train of thoughts is confused, he's unstable and I hate the writers that they damaged this amazing character.

I don't get it - leaving Kevin's girlfriend die, trying to kill Kevin's mother, hate monsters all the time but have a vampire as a friend, bad quotes, bad music or no music (Seriously?!!), no importance of the hunters, Crowley with bad or no plans, tablets, flashbacks that brings nothing new, only sentimental memories and on the top of that bad craft! Try not to laugh in the end of this episode - the slow motion footage of Sam pulling out his knife, Dean disapprovingly shaking his head...

I don't know..they buried my favorite show..but I'm still waiting for the resurrection...

Boring recurring characters in Season 8
hnt_dnl13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
These characters introduced in Season 8 aren't clicking. This Benny character feels so odd and out of place. I can't stand the fake, forced Southern Cowboy drawl that the actor is putting on. My ears bleed anytime he opens his mouth. And he has the charisma and personality of a snail. There's a reason why I've never seen or heard of this actor on anything other than this series. Also, his hat is stupid! Lol Finally, he has ZERO chemistry with Dean, who is so charismatic he could have chemistry with a rock. So that means this Benny guy is less charismatic than a rock. Then there's Sam's weird flashback of his romantic subplot with Amelia, played by another bland new actor. I shouldn't be surprised by any of this as around Season 8 of this show would be the early 2010s when there started to be a noticeable drop in the quality of TV (and movies for that matter) across the board. And the fact that Supernatural was on the CW just made things worse as this network just decided it was going to veer into cringe territory in the early 2010s and it's been stuck there ever since. The writing and acting in the early seasons of this show was top notch that it's disappointing that I'm getting to the point of bland recurring and guest characters played by bargain basement actors, repetitive writing, and probably a bunch of preachy storytelling.
