Down the erotic rabbit hole
osj250711 March 2015
An interesting introduction to the universe of sexual comics, a look into a world that I knew a little about, not much, but who hasn't seen erotic comics in one form or another!

This is an introduction to how it all began and some of the artist that have and are still influencing the world of erotic comics. It is also a look into different persons and their styles and a little about the differences around the world of comics and censor ship etc.

A short documentary, but it gives you names and styles to search for if it catches your interest, there is a lot about different people, different styles and how it all comes in many different shapes and sizes.

Surface Level, Not Really Hard-Hitting

An examination of the history and nature of erotic content in sequential art.

I am not sure where this film came from. Based on the running time, I get the impression it was made for TV, probably French TV. And it is a shame, because I feel like we never really get into the subject matter in any depth. We get to know a bit about some of the bigger artists -- which is nice -- but not about the topic in a larger context. At the very least, it could be pointed out that nude art has existed for centuries... probably since the dawn of time.

A good point was made about the appeal, though... for those who are attracted to such images, it does invite a use of the imagination, which is far more stimulating than simply looking at a photograph or video. The artist merely plants a seed. I suppose this is the case for any comic art -- it is different in our minds than in any film adaptations, for example.

Why isn't this captioned?

I think this was interesting but if you don't understand Italian, Japanese, French, Swiss and German you won't get a whole lot out of this. The R. Crumb segments tell a lot about why he does what he does, I imagine the other artists are doing the same, but not in English.

Sex in Comix (2012)

Molly Crabapple hosts this short documentary about erotic comics and features many world-renowned comic artists.

Erotic comics have always been with us. In the 1950s, here in the U. S., there was a public outcry that comic books were corrupting our youth and the senate was contemplating putting a stop to publishing comic books all together. The comic publishers decided to self-regulate the content with the Comics Code Authority. In the late 60s the underground comix movement started publishing their work and selling through unconventional distributors, avoiding the need for the Comic Code Authority.

Although this film isn't rated it was able to show some of the erotic works of these international artists who had a lot to say about their work and societies attitudes. However, the one thing that I didn't appreciate was that the foreign cartoonists WERE NOT subtitle translated. I would have been interested in hearing how things were in Germany, Italy, France, and Japan, etc. It was nice to hear from Robert Crumb and his wife, Aline Kominsky-Crumb. Crumb talked about how his comix were an expression of some of his crazy ideas.

It wasn't just about pornography and sexually arousing or titillating comix, these comix also covered sexual politics, gay, feminist, and funny comix, just for fun.
