Alex Proyas, the director of 1994’s The Crow, argues that the original film should have been left to stand alone out of respect ‘for Brandon Lee’s legacy’.
Remaking 1994’s The Crow was always going to be a particularly tricky proposition, and given the recent wave of criticism that has accompanied the release of first-look images and the trailer for the upcoming film, that is certainly proving to be the case.
Not only is the film a beloved mid-90s classic, but it also marks the final appearance of Brandon Lee, whose life was cut tragically short when an on-set sequence with a prop gun during the film’s production killed him at the age of just 28.
As such, the film holds a special significance for many, including its director Alex Proyas, who has repeatedly called for The Crow not to be remade over the last few years.

Grant Page, the larger-than-life Australian stunt performer famous for his jaw-dropping work in films including Mad Max, The Man From Hong Kong and Mad Dog Morgan, has died. He was 85.
Page died Thursday when the car he was driving near his home in Kendall on the coast of New South Wales hit a tree, his son Leroy Page told Daily Mail Australia.
Page worked with director Brian Trenchard-Smith on more than a dozen projects, including The Stuntmen (1973), King Fu Killers (1974), The Man From Hong Kong (1973) — where Page fights martial arts expert Jimmy Wang Yu in scenes using knives, cleavers and meat hooks — Deathcheaters (1976), Stunt Rock (1978) and Hospitals Don’t Burn Down! (1978).
And for the documentary Dangerfreaks (1987), Trenchard-Smith filmed Page standing on a ledge outside the perimeter fence on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York.

If you want to see a wild midnight movie, there’s a little-known Australian movie called Stunt Rock, which might blow your mind. In it, an Australian stuntman named Grant Page (playing himself) visits Los Angeles to do stunts for a TV show and hooks up with a heavy metal band named Sorcery (the band is like Kiss if they also did magic). It has many fans, including Eli Roth, who used one of Sorcery’s songs in his Death Wish remake and is prominently featured in an incredible documentary about Australian exploitation films (Ozploitation) called Not Quite Hollywood.
More than anything, this documentary was a loving tribute to Page, who did incredible stunts for almost every cool action film shot in Australia over the last fifty years, including Mad Max, and Road Games (in which he played the mostly unseen villain). Sadly, Mark Hartley, the director of Not Quite Hollywood,...

For many older viewers, Jennifer Garner’s portrayal of Elektra holds a special place in their hearts, despite the flaws of her standalone movie. However, when Netflix produced Marvel shows, Elodie Yung won fans over with her portrayal of the youthful assassin and Daredevil’s love interest.
Now it’s confirmed that Garner will return as Elektra in the upcoming ‘Daredevil & Wolverine.’ With ‘Echo’ incorporating elements from the ‘Defenders’ storyline, fans are hopeful for Yung’s return as Elektra in the MCU. Yung herself acknowledged the constant inquiries about the role in an interview with toofab.
Oh my god, I would love that! My fans are like “Can you come back?” I’m like, ask Mr. Marvel. You have to ask Mr. Marvel… I would gladly replay this part, are you kidding? She’s so much fun!

For most of the older audiences, Jennifer Garner is the only live-action Elektra that they are emotionally tied to, no matter how bad her standalone movie was. But back when Netflix was making shows based on Marvel characters, Elodie Yung embodied the young assassin and Daredevil’s love interest and fans took quite a liking to her.
Now it’s been confirmed that Garner will reprise her role as Elektra in the upcoming ‘Daredevil & Wolverine,’ and since ‘Echo’ has canonized a good portion of the ‘Defenders’ saga plenty of fans have been hoping that Elodie Yung will make a return as Elektra in the MCU. In fact, Yung admitted as much herself, that she gets asked constantly about the role in her interview with toofab.

Actress Sydney Sweeney does not seem to be slowing down even though her last release Madame Web was a box office disaster. The actress was part of the ensemble cast in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film along with Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. Fans trolled the film for its terrible writing, VFX, and campy performances.
However, Sydney Sweeney seemed to have put the trolls behind her as she recently poked fun at her film. Sweeney appeared on Saturday Night Live earlier this week and referred to its failure in her monologue. The actress had joined the show as a host to promote her upcoming horror film Immaculate.

Sony Pictures’ recent release Madame Web is directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker and a writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim and more.
The movie is a suspense thriller that follows the story of Madame Web’s origin story in a standalone universe. Madame Web is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and opened up to negative reviews from the critics as well as the audience. Dedicated fans of Marvel Comics mentioned how the writers of the movie do not have a single successful movie under their kitty.

It seems that Madame Web has unwittingly become a smash hit, falling squarely into the category of “so bad it’s good.” In the past few months, the only thing the film has managed to get right is making tons of headlines be it all for the wrong reasons, but the film was anything but forgettable, at least in the news cycle. Now, folks are itching to know what all the fuss is about. Despite nobody taking it seriously as an actual superhero flick and a string of bad reviews, thanks to its wonky dialogue and choppy editing, people are still lining up for a peek. It’s a marvel, just not the kind anyone expected!

Well, although people had high hopes for the Dakota Johnson-Valentine release this year, Madame Web has been all over the place. From sloppy marketing to confusing script with dialogue disasters, the film’s journey has been anything but smooth. With a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say Madame Web missed the mark.
But hold on, Johnson isn’t alone here! Turns out, the writers are in a bit of a pickle, churning out one dud after another. That’s why @CultureCrave on X cooked up a spicy list, showcasing the Rotten Tomato scores from the writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless’ previous ventures. And it does not look good on them.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

On another sleepy autumn weekend at the box office when actors can’t promote their movies due to the strikes, Millennium Media and Lionsgate are rolling out the latest in their long-in-the-tooth Sylvester Stallone-Jason Statham franchise, Expendables 4, to a weekend take between $15 million-$17 million.
That range is right around where 2014’s Expendables 3 opened –$15.8M– and not far from where Stallone’s last Rambo film resided pre-pandemic, 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood, which bowed to $18.8M. Expendables 3 ended its stateside run at $39.3M while Rambo: Last Blood finaled at $44.8M.
Guys over 25 are the grab with the fourth movie about over-the-hill action heroes booked in 3,400 theaters. The R-rated movie is also playing at 700 Plf screens including Xd, Rpx, Dolby and D Box. Previews start at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Similar to other Lionsgate pics with Millennium, the former is handling North America and UK. Again, all these meat-and-potatoes...

Nobody sets out to make a movie that will fail, be it a tiny independent production or the biggest of big blockbusters from a major studio. On the flip side, occasionally arrogance of a sort sets in and there is an element of presumed success with a film, and those projects -- more often than not -- feel doomed to fail. Such was the case with Lionsgate's 2016 big-budget fantasy play "Gods of Egypt," which bombed spectacularly upon its initial release. Yet, lofty ambitions existed as this was eyed as just the first entry in a brand new franchise. Before it all went to hell, that is.
The film, directed by Alex Proyas, cost a whopping $140 million to produce before marketing, putting it firmly in gigantic blockbuster territory. But it made a paltry $31 million in total at the domestic box office and topped out at $150 million worldwide. Per Variety, Lionsgate...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" first hit the airwaves in 1993, and even though that original iteration of Rangers didn't last all that long, the series has remained remarkably enduring. 30 years later, the series has aired nearly 1,000 episodes through its various iterations, has inspired hundreds of issues of comics books, millions in toy sales, and is truly a globally recognized brand with huge staying power. Still, the franchise has never managed to fully crack the code in making the jump to movies.
Two films, the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," did fine enough by '90s "kids movies based on a show" standards, which were ultimately more about selling toys and copies of the films on VHS.

Alex Proyas has been Mia from the feature film scene since 2016's "Gods of Egypt," which fizzled at the box office despite its large scale and impressive cast, and that's not great. Proyas has turned in masterpieces and head-scratchers over the last 30 years, but one thing is always consistent with his work: he swings for the fences. That guy is not afraid to go big, go weird, and hope that the audience follows along.
All you have to do is look at his filmography and you'll see that thread time and again. Starting with "The Crow," his fantastic follow-up "Dark City," "I, Robot,"...

It’s become something of a running gag on the internet that “Morbius” isn’t really a movie. Online observers insist that, from its ever-changing release date over the last two years to its grim and somewhat goofy premise involving Jared Leto as a scientist who turns into a vampire, this has to be an elaborate prank and not an actual film.
We can confirm that “Morbius” is, really and truly, a movie. Granted, it’s not much of a movie, but it’s a movie nonetheless.
Leto does indeed star as Michael Morbius, a world-renowned physician — talented enough to invent an artificial blood substitute, iconoclastic enough to turn down the Nobel Prize he won for the invention — who has grappled with blood-borne disease since childhood. With the financial support of lifelong friend and fellow patient Milo (Matt Smith), Michael has become a leader in his field, even as he...

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will star in and executive produce a series adaptation of the Christina Clancy novel “The Second Home” currently in the works at Sony’s TriStar TV, Variety has learned.
The story follows the Gordon and Shaw families beyond a fateful summer on Cape Cod. Told through two generations, the story explores how a devastating secret can derail young love, tear apart families, and change the fate of countless individuals forever if they let it. “The Second Home” was Clancy’s debut novel. It was published by St. Martin’s Press in June 2020.
No network or writer is currently attached to the series, but Coster-Waldau will executive produce along with his producing partners Joe Derrick and Jeffrey Chassen under their Ill Kippers banner.
Should the series move forward, it would mark Coster-Waldau’s first television role since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. He famously played Jaime Lannister throughout the megahit HBO show’s eight-season run.

Hollywood star Gerard Butler admits being a control freak. Butler was serving as a producer for the film, Greenland, when he enjoyed the chance to have a more hands-on role in the project.
"I'm a control freak! As an actor, when you're coming up, you beg for roles, and you're lucky to get one and then you suddenly find yourself in a position where movies are being made, because you're involved," Butler told Total Film magazine, femalefirst.co.uk reported.
Gerard Butler added: "So if that's the case, you say, 'I want to produce it, I want to have some control, I want to help shape this film.' Not the studio movies, like 'Gods Of Egypt' or 'Geostorm'. But all the other ones, in the independent world.
He loves being very involved. "I get a chance to develop, be involved with script, choose the director.

Sony are once again hedging their bets on an interconnected superhero franchise, despite the relative failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already causing them to abandon the idea once before and strike the unprecedented licensing agreement with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, which led to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker becoming an integral part of the McU.
This time they’ll have to do it without their most marketable asset, because while details of the new deal signed last summer haven’t been made clear, most people are operating under the impression that Marvel will handle solo Spidey movies, but Holland will show up in the Spumc from time to time.
Venom was a monster hit that raked in over $850 million at the box office, and this summer’s sequel Let There Be Carnage is poised to do big business, but there are no guarantees that Morbius will experience a similar level of success.

Even the most ardent comic book fans would struggle to justify the existence of a Madame Web solo movie, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from putting the project into active development for a second time.
Back when The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was set to launch a litany of sequels and spinoffs that failed to materialize, Cassandra Webb was just one of many names linked to their own adventure, which has to be up there with the rumored Aunt May prequel as one of the most pointless ideas floated in the studio’s offices.
Undeterred, though, Madame Web was announced once again in September 2019 as part of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless tasked with writing the script. And given that the duo’s previous works include Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt, expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

Gerard Butler made his screen debut in 1997 period drama Mrs. Brown, but it wasn’t until the success of Zack Snyder’s 300 a decade later that he finally found his niche in Hollywood at the complete opposite end of the genre spectrum. The heavily stylized comic book adaptation remains the biggest live-action box office hit of his career, but over the last thirteen years he’s carved out a reputation as a solid and dependable presence in the realms of the mid budget action thriller.
For the most part, when you see Butler’s name attached to a movie, you know exactly what you’re going to get. While there’s been some notable duds along the way such as Gods of Egypt, Geostorm and Hunter Killer, the 51 year-old can typically be relied on to deliver a gruffly charismatic performance in solidly enjoyable actioners that tend to do decent business at the box office.

When Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away in August at the age of just 43 after a privately fought four-year battle with colon cancer, fans rushed to pay their respects by both posting tributes on social media and revisiting the actor’s back catalogue, with Black Panther and Jackie Robinson biopic 42 quickly becoming two of the most-streamed titles on the planet.
Now, another one of the star’s movies has found itself as a very popular streaming option, which wouldn’t be news if it wasn’t for the fact that the film in question is irredeemably awful, and one of the worst blockbusters in recent history. Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt was a disaster in every sense of the word, boasting visual effects that would have been laughably bad in a project that cost a few thousand dollars, never mind the $140 million that it cost to put the fantasy epic together.

Chadwick Boseman achieved an impressive legacy of memorable screen roles, including historical figures Thurgood Marshall, James Brown and Jackie Robinson plus indomitable creations like Black Panther. But which of his roles do you consider his greatest? Vote in our poll below.
After spending much of the 2000s in recurring and guest roles on television, Chadwick Boseman seriously considered quitting acting before landing his breakout film role in “42” as breakthrough baseball star Jackie Robinson in 2013. Boseman received critical acclaim for the role and even landed nominations from the NAACP Image Awards, the Chicago Film Critics and more.
The next year he co-starred with Kevin Costner in “Draft Day” and found his next big biopic role in the form of “Get on Up,” the James Brown story. Before he was a superhero, Chadwick Boseman was a movie star. He seemed to have that quality about him from the get-go, that ineffable something that makes you want to watch people laugh and cry and rage and love, projected 20 feet high onto a screen, something both intimate and larger than life. For a lot of us, it started with 42, the 2013 biopic on Jackie Robinson. Boseman wasn’t exactly an unknown when director Brian Helgeland cast him — he had a long list of TV credits ranging from soap operas to police procedurals,...

Actor Chadwick Boseman, who gained international recognition in Marvel's Black Panther, has died, according to multiple news reports and confirmed by his official social media account. He was 43. Boseman began appearing in U.S. television shows in 2003 and made his big-screen debut in a supporting role in The Express (2008). He broke out big in the U.S. through his portrayals of Black icons, first as baseball legend Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013) and then as 'the hardest working man in show business,' James Brown, in Get on Up (2014). An appearance in Alex Proyas' Gods of Egypt (2016) didn't hurt, but it was his first appearance as T'Challa, aka Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War (2016) that electrified audiences worldwide. The first time TheWrap spoke to Chadwick Boseman, it was the fall of 2014 and he had just come off the remarkable one-two punch of playing Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get on Up.” At the end of the conversation, he laughed that he was not looking to do another biopic anytime soon. “Another biopic might pop up that I have to do, but before that I have to do a few other things, if not 10 other things,” he said. “And if we make it that far, I’ve already won anyway.” From that moment until his shocking death of cancer at the age of 43, Boseman made exactly 10 more movies: first “Gods of Egypt”; then “Captain America: Civil War,” the first of four Marvel films in which he played Black Panther; then another biopic, “Marshall,” in which he played U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; and also “Message From the King,...

Actor Chadwick Boseman, the star of the the blockbuster Marvel film Black Panther, has died from colon cancer at the age of 43.
He kept his battle with cancer quiet from the public. Boseman died at home in Los Angeles with his wife and family present, according to his publicist Friday night.
Boseman notably played the parts of baseball icon Jackie Robinson, the future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall and music superstar James Brown during his film career. However, it was his role as T’Challa, the king of Marvel’s mythical African land of Wakanda, that gave him international recognition.
His family said in a statement: “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. Given that he’s built most of his career on starring in franchises, it hardly comes as a surprise that Vin Diesel would be interested in reprising another role from his back catalogue. Bloodshot may yet see him booted out of the proposed Valiant Cinematic Universe after the movie stumbled out of the blocks, but that won’t stop the noted tank top enthusiast from attempting to cement himself as the star of yet another multi-film series.

“It has all the attributes you’d expect from one of my madcap adventures,” Proyas said on his Facebook page.
“We shall be exploring virtual environments to create a dreamlike reality; a completely independent production, which points to the future of independent filmmaking. The techniques we discover with this short shall be used for full theatrical feature film production in due course.”
Bonnie plays the dual role of a character named Olivia who, she says, “is not as she seems.”

Alex Proyas.
Alex Proyas’ career is gaining momentum as he’s just signed with the Gersh agency and a long-stalled sci-fi thriller he wants to direct is moving ahead with a powerhouse Hollywood producer.
Mike Medavoy is set to produce The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag with a screenplay which Proyas adapted from a 1942 novella by American science fiction author Robert Heinlein.
The original story captured Proyas’ imagination from a young age, ultimately serving as inspiration for his 1998 film Dark City.
The title character is struck one evening with the realisation that he has no memory of what he does during the day.
Worried that he might be engaged in some nefarious activities, he contacts a husband and wife detective agency and asks them to surreptitiously follow him.
Their investigation leads to a series of frightening revelations, beginning with a group of shadowy figures who gravely warn of dire consequences...

Exclusive: The Crow, I, Robot and Gods Of Egypt director Alex Proyas has signed with Gersh.
Sydney-based Proyas, also well known for movies Dark City, Garage Days and Knowing, started out as a music video director working with artists including Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, James Reyne and Inxs.
The Australian filmmaker is currently working on two projects: The New Country, a “sci-fi rock opera” with producer Brad Fischer; and The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, a sci-fi film noir with producer Mike Medavoy.
The New Country is a time travel story set in a desert in “a very rare 1982”. The Medavoy project is a long-gestating movie once set up with Red Granite. It’s based on the 1942 novella by iconic science fiction author Robert Heinlein. The novella was a favorite of Proyas’s from a young age and served as the inspiration for his Dark City.
