Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.
“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

It took about an hour of speeches saluting Viola Davis during the Film at Lincoln Center’s 48th annual Chaplin Gala before someone addressed the elephant in the room.
“When I see a movie like ‘The Woman King,’ it has Viola’s fingerprints all over it,” said Davis’ “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” co-star Jessica Chastain. “A movie like that with a female director and a cast of powerful Black female leads can get made in Hollywood today because of Viola’s lifelong advocacy for women of color. Maybe one day a movie like that can get nominated for an Oscar.”
The statement was met with enthusiastic applause from an audience comprised of Lincoln Center donors, industry colleagues, and plenty of acting students from Davis’ alma mater, Juilliard. It was an explicit callout to the biggest Oscar snub to cast a shadow over last year’s awards season, and contextualized...

Exclusive: The packages keep coming in before the Thanksgiving holiday as Deadline is hearing Keke Palmer is attached to the action comedy Moxie with Bert on board to direct. Heather Quinn penned the script with Palmer, Peter Lawson and Kate Churchill producing. The package hit the marketplace this week and already has interest from several studios and streamers.
The film is about a foul-mouthed stripper who pisses off the FBI in a big way when she somehow becomes the best candidate for their fancy new agent program.
Palmer is coming off her scene-stealing role in the hit Jordan Peele pic Nope, which bowed earlier this year and has grossed 171 million at the box-office. She also voiced Izzy Hawthorne in Pixar’s Lightyear.

Hawkeye directors Bert & Bertie are staying in the Disney family. The duo, who helmed three episodes of the Marvel/Disney+ series, have signed on to direct a feature for Disney based on the theme park attraction Big Thunder Mountain.
Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free will produce, with Bert & Bertie directing from a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the married screenwriting pair whose credits include Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and the 2017 Power Rangers reboot.

In the lead-up to releasing “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Sony has played it fairly tight-lipped about what exactly this movie might be: Is it a prequel, a sequel or some kind of spinoff? Pretty much any discussion of the answer will come as a spoiler to those who like surprises, so be warned that this review is not intended as a marketing tool for the studio (those seeking coy teasers are better off watching the trailers), but as a critique of what this unnecessary but enjoyable movie actually delivers.
The good news for “Ghostbusters” fans is that “Afterlife” does nothing to tarnish what has come before, overseen as it is by Jason Reitman, carrying on the legacy of his father (and “Ghostbusters” director) Ivan, who played an important behind-the-scenes role in shaping this 21st-century update. The franchise has made the family rich, spawning a sequel, an animated series, a comic book line and an ill-fated 2016 reboot.

Not since Shane Black brought his signature obsession with the holiday season to “Iron Man 3” has the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse embraced Christmas with such holly jolly cheer. The first trailer for “Hawkeye,” the next Marvel series coming to Disney Plus, arrived on Monday with a sleigh full of holiday references and a first look at Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop.
Picking up after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” “Hawkeye” focuses on Marvel itself describes as a “seemingly simple mission.” Clint Barton must “get back to his family for Christmas.” But his journey is interrupted by the presence of a young woman named Kate Bishop, an “archer with dreams of becoming a superhero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.”
Kate is “a 22-year-old kid and she’s a big Hawkeye fan,” Renner previously told Entertainment Weekly.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has successfully made the jump to television with Emmy winner “WandaVision” and buzzy hits “Loki” and “The Falcon and the Winter Solider.” Next up for the ever-enduring franchise — on TV — is “Hawkeye,” which finds Jeremy Renner reprising his Avengers character opposite MCU newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. Also involved is Florence Pugh, who made her MCU debut as the highly trained spy and assassin Yelena Belova earlier this year in “Black Widow.” The supporting cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy, and James Alaqua Cox.
The official synopsis for “Hawkeye” from Disney+ reads: “Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: Get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Exclusive: Mckenna Grace has joined the upcoming fourth season of Hulu’s flagship drama series The Handmaid’s Tale, which resumed production in Toronto two weeks ago, sources said.
Grace will recur as Mrs. Keyes, a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence. She has a rebellious, subversive streak, and is calm and pious on the outside with turmoil, even insanity, on the inside.
The Handmaid Tale was a couple of weeks into filming its fourth season when the fast growing coronavirus outbreak shut down production in mid-March. Star and executive producer Elisabeth Moss, who had been set to make her directorial debut with the third episode of Season 4, made the announcement on Instagram:

“Black Mirror” is the three-time reigning champion in Best TV Movie, an Emmy race ostensibly for one-off productions. The dystopian satire was expected to contend to extend its record, which it set when it won for the second time, but its victories were so controversial that the academy amended eligibility requirements. Movies (and episodes entering as movies) now must have a minimum 75-minute runtime to qualify for Best TV Movie. This disqualified all episodes from the fifth (and probably final) season of “Black Mirror,” which had already been produced when the academy announced the change.
SEEour slugfest with initial reactions to the nominations.
Despite the rule seemingly being introduced only to force “Black Mirror” out of Best TV Movie, Netflix lobbied the academy for an exception, which they inexplicably granted. Rival networks complained and the academy caved again. They reversed the reversal, opting to play by their own new rules...

Exclusive: Gael García Bernal will don the mask and the tights of Cassandro, an independent feature from Oscar winning and two-time Emmy nominee filmmaker Roger Ross Williams.
Cassandro tells the true story of Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rises to international stardom after he creates the “exotico” character Cassandro, the “Liberace of Lucha Libre,” and in the process upends not just the macho wrestling world but also his own life.
Armendáriz at the age of 15 quit school and began training for Lucha Libre, beginning his professional wrestling career in 1988 under the mask as Mister Romano. Ultimately he would abandon the character and take on the exotico character of Baby Sharon. Exoticos are male wrestlers who dress in drag.
Ultimately, Armendáriz would take the new ring name of Cassandro, from a Tijuana brothel keeper Cassandra whom he appreciated. In January 1991, after bad press that he was...

But more than a few major big-screen female talents who have at least one Oscar on a shelf are in contention for Emmys — some with multiple chances this year to compete on the ballot. Check out which illustrious actresses are in the running.
