Castiel and Crowley return!
Shane318214 November 2012
Several random people are being snatched away with supposedly nothing that connects them; Sam and Dean suspect that demons are involved and investigate the case. While this is happening, Dean still feels guilty about Castiel not escaping from Purgatory with him (as seen in flashbacks)...until Cas randomly shows up with no memory of how he escaped.

Many fans rejoiced because of Castiel's appearance, it's great to see him back to normal and fighting alongside the Winchesters again. The question is quickly brought up by Dean: How did he escape? To my surprise, the question was answered in this episode rather than leave it hanging, but I will not spoil the surprise for you. However, the answer to the question did also bring up some new questions which will, I suspect, be answered in later episodes.

Not only did Cas make a big reappearance, we also see Crowley in this episode. It has been a few episodes since we last saw him, and he has been the main villain of this season, or at least is the one who stands in our protagonists way the most. Something I particularly loved about this episode was Crowley's character. In previous seasons Crowley has helped out the Winchesters (when it benefits him) and has become a likable character that makes jokes and witty comments, this episode really showed the dark side of his character that we don't always see. Yes, in the past we've seen Crowley torture and kill others, but generally it was to people who we didn't know well or care that much about (minor characters). Then we have this episode where Crowley is fighting against the good guys that we know and (arguably) care about. As much as I enjoy witty Crowley, I think having him as a cruel villain was a good reminder to the audience that he is in fact the "king of hell".

A very enjoyable episode! The past several episodes have felt episodic, or rather weren't really part of the main storyline (that doesn't make them bad at all, but at the same time it doesn't seem to really push the story along), but this one did have some interesting developments and I am looking forward to seeing what happens from them. I would give this episode a solid 8 / 10.

The others return!
mm-3916 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Sam and Dean have most of the supporting cast return minus Bobby! A good episode of the brothers pitted against the demons. The Kevin and his mom characters add much humor. I believe the Winchesters can not carry the show themselves anymore. The two brothers have done almost everything they could do together in the first three seasons. Supernatural could have the Winchesters work alone or in a bigger group. I believe the Kevin storyline will continue in its comical way. I hope they bring Dick Roman back. Crowley keeps everyone guessing but you know that he will always do what is best for himself. Now that Cassiel is back, I am sure the writers will have him helping the brothers out and then reporting back to heaven as the deal was for his rescue from purgatory.

Crowley is always fun but episode is hampered by a weaker script.

The ongoing game of chess that Crowley is playing is fun to watch and the core developments of the season work. The general tablet story with Crowley being the big bad is wonderful. The other prophets are darkly funny the way Crowley is but I think the script because of the words on the page has some problems.

Mrs. Tran's characterization is too rough. She is at once deeply suspicious and resourceful but also naive and careless. The way Crowley captures Kevin feels forced by the writers and Mrs. Tran takes the blunt of schlocky plotting. Another pass and removing a beat here or a beat there could have solved this.

Cas's guilt is overcooked. It feels unneeded in the grand scope of the show as the issue of Cas feeling guilty for Season 6 (and first episode of season 7) action's was satisfactorily resolved in the final few episodes Season 7. The guilty conscience of Cas's feels forced to make the (mediocre) Naomi storyline work better.

YAY!! Cas is back!!

Warning: Spoilers
Castiel is back, in all (well, most) of his bad-ass glory! Think Season 5, when he was killing angels to help save Adam from Michael. And FREAKING Amanda Tapping is on Supernatural now!!! I'm having a geek overload/sci-fi induced heart attack... Breathe... Breathe...

Okay, I'm more and more impressed with this season as it progresses, although I hope they're about done with the flashbacks. Unlike many of you, I kind of like the Benny character, and hope we get to see him being the "moral" vampire occasionally (maybe with Lenore (Amber Benson from 'Buffy'), and I also liked the werewolf/"Chronicle" episode. Anyway, apparently Amanda Tapping is Castiel's watchdog in Heaven (but slightly sinister, so we don't know what's really happening or how he escaped Purgatory). They did mention the archangel Metatron, so maybe the voice of God had something to do with it. I just wish some development company would make a console game(not Supernatural, because games based on movies and TV invariably suck) involving Angels and demons, gritty like these are, not armored angels with feathered wings and giant swords. K, shutting up now...

Angels

I Don't like the constant ressurections, but this one atleast makes some sense. What little i remember from this season is how boring Amanda Tapping's character was which is a shame because i love stargate sg-1 and was excited to see her. Dean's whole thing is annoying. Entertaining episode with Crowley being the highlight.

Good and Bad
Johnny_West30 August 2023
It is nice to see Castiel, Crowley, and Amanda Tapping as the sinister angel. The occasional discussions of angel-wars and thousands of angels getting killed is annoying. Supernatural really works hard at degrading Heaven and angels as just trailer park trash that has very little class, morals, ethics, or other redeeming qualities. Often the angels are as bad as the demons.

The few nice angels that show up, like Sandamriel (is that the name of a Keebler cookie?) get killed off. Castiel in particular started off as a great angel that helped the Winchesters and he has been constantly degraded into a bad character, and in this episode he reaches a new low.

Crowley on the other hand is very consistently good as an evil villain. At least he stay true to his nature. Dean never stops complaining and whining about everything, and his dialogue is usually the most annoying part of any episode. Kevin's Mom is just as bad, another fountain of negative remarks. Her shrill voice and fish face just make it even worse. I fast forward Mrs. Tran and a lot of Dean too.

Instead of just having a full episode or two about purgatory, we get these annoying flashbacks to it every time Dean wants to complain about Castiel not jumping out, or Sam not trying to find Dean. Get over it and grow up Dean!

Enough

I am sooo sick of Crawley. That's all I got to say! I do welcome the new Bobby however. Be nice to go back to seasons 1 thru 5. Different case each episode solved. Next. This dragging out of Crawley, Dean's issues and Sams sulky face doesn't help the show.
