Defense of Marriage ***
edwagreen26 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The case involving the gay married men is often confusing, especially when it comes to the lawyer, who has argued cases before the supreme court. He joins Lockhart Gardner in the case despite the fact that he has his own agenda. He wants the guys to lose so that he can argue a much broader case in the court.

The sidebar story in this episode is much better. Stockard Channing co-stars as Alicia's mother. She is quite an active woman with 3 marriages and an apparent affair all behind her. Her 3rd husband's son is ready to take her to court when his father dies suddenly and he claims that his father had changed his will after learning of her latest escapades. Channing is quite effective here as the absentee mother.

Apparently, Cary is stating that his bruised face is as a result of basketball playing other than really what happened.

Archie Panjabi's Kalinda takes a backseat here and Alan Cumming's role as Eli Gold is non-existent here and it's showing.

Cary gives to visit Nick on sight with his injury telling Nick his partner may cause some problems for him. Back to court and Bucky plays another wire tap. Once again Diane has problems with Bucky using the wire tap he brings up compelling thoughts causing the judge to think about letting the wire tap be used. In the waiting room of the firm Jeremy Breslow (Bruce McGill) is waiting to talk to the heads of the firm. He gets in to talk to them but Will thinks they should not use him. Alicia gets home and her mom Veronica Loy (Stockard Channing) is there bursting her way into her life again. It turns out that her mom actually needs to her help because she got nothing from her dead friend. Just when Jeremy gets a good witness Bucky is able to find something to use against this witness with Jeremy only able to object. Veronica meets with David Lee who will be looking over her case. Veronica then sees outside that Owen is talking to Will and meets him without knowing who he was. Veronica's case starts with a screaming match and opposing side does not like the way David Lee works even though Veronica seems very into him. When another witness goes to the stand Bucky gets the worst out of him. The judge finally comes to a decision after hearing enough that the wire tap will be usable during the case. Alicia and her mom share some wine where Veronica try's to apologize to her. When Veronica brings up Will she knows that Owen told her mom about her and Will. Diane does not like Jeremy's methods because she believes he wants to lose her case but he tells her he does want to win. Once again in court the defense is fighting on the inside because Alicia wants to ask some questions. The tap that would not be used now being usable reveals some evidence that gets them an offer. Jeremy does not seem happy with the offer and thinks the client should still fight. Jeremy talks the client into using their influence to get other gay men better fights. Owen is now involved in Veronica's case and he can either lie of tell the truth. Jeremy being upset with the firm s now fighting with them at the court. Owen lies about his mother and the opposing client gets angry. The firm show Bucky some more evidence they received and that he should drop the case. While at home Jacki comes to the door and it seems that Veronica may have a problem. Peter then arrives at the apartment to complete this thanksgiving dinner with the whole family. Veronica notices that Alicia is not going after Will because she stays with Peter. Veronica tells her that she should go after she wants or she will end up like her. Veronica then talks to Peter telling him he is selfish for holding onto Alicia. Alicia in anger against her mother brings Peter into the bathroom to prove a point that she and Peter are fine. Stockard was great and it's always a delight when Owen comes on the show. The case was good to and also Bucky is really getting to me how mean he is. Bruce McGill was great to in his small amount of time.

EPISODE GRADE: B+ (MVP: Stockard Channing)
