- Having finished a one-night stand, Barney notices a dog following him. Calling the dog "Brover," Barney uses him to pick up women. Robin is worried about Barney and feels that the breakup with Quinn is leading to this strange behavior with Brover. Robin says that Barney is lonely and Brover is Barney's call for help. Robin asks Nick to invite Barney for dinner. Nick, who hosts a cooking show prepares a sumptuous meal. Nick is also looking for a signature catch phrase like "All aboard the Chow Chow Train" "Oh my gosh, who is ready to nosh" "who's popping a chub for some grub", but Robin keeps shooting him down. Barney and a suited-up Brover arrive, but as Nick is serving the food, Barney receives a call: Brover's owner has returned and wants him back. Barney wants to jump off the balcony out of despair and Robin stops him, offering to accompany him in returning the dog.
The two head to another apartment, where an attractive woman claims the dog. The woman mistakes Barney and Robin for a couple, causing Robin to pretend to be a lesbian and leave Barney with the woman. Going into the woman's apartment, Barney comments that Robin is the "best wing-man." Nick is displeased with Robin's behavior of spending time with her guy friends, and that's when she receives a text from Ted asking her to meet at MacLaren's.
Ted notices Victoria exhibiting strange mannerisms and references to their relationship, causing him to consult Marshall and Lily. The two state that Victoria was actually giving Ted signals about a deeper commitment, especially since they were continuing their relationship where they left off several years before. Lily says that women over 30 don't joke when it comes to commitment. Marshall says that Victoria is not taking things slow as her friends from high school are already posting pictures of their 2nd kids on Facebook. They remind Ted how Victoria asked about the job opportunity she got for running a bakery in Denver. That was Victoria asking Ted to move to Denver with her. Ted feels that he is in the right plays with Victoria as they are co-signing Christmas cards and foreplay is out of the window. Lily says that Ted and Victoria dated before, therefore the clock does not reset to zero. It only restarts from where they left off.
When Ted speaks to Victoria, she tells Ted that Lily and Marshall are right. Victoria says that she jumped into a car with Ted in her wedding dress. She wants to get married. Ted cannot figure out what is holding him back from committing to Victoria. Marshall tells Ted that either he should commit or let Victoria go. Ted decorates his apartment with red roses and proposes to Victoria. She agrees to marry him on one condition - he'll have to sever his friendship with Robin, because she is the obstacle to any future together. Lily agrees with Victoria when she says that Ted has to pick between Robin or Victoria. At MacLaren's, Ted tells Victoria that there's no chance of him getting back together with Robin, but she is an important part of his life. Victoria wishes he'll get Robin one day and leaves.
Ted asks Marshall and Lily to keep the truth about Robin's indirect role in the breakup to themselves. Future Ted reveals that Robin would learn about it much later. Ted announces the breakup to the gang the following day at his apartment, where Robin says the reason, he asked her to meet at the bar was to pitch ideas for a Mosby Boys young adult novel series.
Barney chances upon Brover, who tells him in bark-speak that he supposedly got a nearby dog pregnant. That dog chases off Barney and Brover.
