Not quite thunder
gizmomogwai29 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Knowing that it's their last season of 30 Rock (preferable to abrupt cancellation that leaves everything unresolved), the makers of the show opt to give a farewell to Elaine Stritch's character, Jack's mother Colleen Donaghy. She spends most of her portion of the episode warning her death is near, something she apparently has always been saying, although there are jokes in the early seasons about her life being "endless." When she finally does die, Jack is left with the task of giving the eulogy for a woman who was often oppressive to him.

This episode has had positive reception, but a bit of it fell short for me. I found myself wishing it were funnier- it has its amusing moments, but it's not hilarious. Many of the jokes that do work are the traditional self-deprecatory jokes about Tina Fey. The mention of Pearl Harbor Day is also a quirky use of history. I thought much of the drama of the episode was also underdeveloped. Colleen is dealt with pretty lightly in this episode. When she falls down and her foot twitches, was that supposed to be funny? That said, Kermit is a welcome part of the funeral, as is the commentary on 30 Rock's ratings. My Whole Life Is Thunder is far from a bad episode, but I can't quite shake the feeling that it's sort of a missed opportunity.

My Whole Life Is Thunder (#7.8)

Warning: Spoilers
Jenna is mad about Liz's wedding because she was just planning her surprise wedding and wants to pay her back by starting her wedding at the awards ceremony. Jack's mom is in town and keeps of talking about dying which she eventually does. Tracy wants to help Kenneth make his life more like a TV show.

Colleen is dead! Well, I guess it was a good timing since the show is about to end. I lie how they made her more fragile and old looking. As well as the last words Jack said to her and his intention to make the best eulogy to show it to her. Jenna making her wedding at the funeral was also very appropriate, this is so Jenna!

A thundrous Christmas
safenoe1 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the final Christmas episode of 30 Rock, and I loved Liz's reference to Lifetime, and Jenna singing to the audience, "Secret plan!!".

The latex allergy reference was somewhat hilarious.

Elaine Stritch appears for the final time as Jack's Mom. You know 30 Rock is coming to an end.

Florence Henderson pretty much sheds her Carol Brady persona.

Watching Jack Donaghy is kind of surreal with events surrounding the actor who played him.

It's easy to forget that 30 Rock and Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip debuted on NBC at the same time. Conventional wisdom was that Sorkin's powerhouse series be the one that would survive the first season, with 30 Rock being a one season wonder. But history has proved otherwise.

Over the length of it he makes everyone cry, laugh also including Kermit the Frog. Liz then sees Jenna is planning to get married at the funeral. Everyone seems OK with the wedding happening and it does. Jenna and Paul get married with everyone feeling weird still around them. Funny episode and I'm sad Colleen is finished with the show forever. Alec was very funny to. Jane was the best thing as usual.

EPISODE GRADE: A- (MVP: Elaine Stritch)
