I know I’m in the critical minority when admitting my enjoyment of the Cars franchise, but I honestly do. It’s not even that I am a “car guy” either—I’ve never seen the appeal of them beyond their utility as a transportation vehicle. So my enjoyment of the first film was solely on the level of its message and humor. It dealt with the theme of ego and humility as Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) discovered you simply cannot get through life on an island alone. Cars 2 may not have put message in the foreground (Larry the Cable Guy‘s Mater taking center stage to teach kids about individuality, self-esteem, and courage), but it tried something different by projecting a pure entertainment genre (spy thriller) atop its existing world.
While the second didn’t possess the same lasting power as a result, it had merit if only because it was fun.

After its premiere at the New York Film Festival at the beginning of this month and a limited release this past weekend, Steve Jobs, the latest biopic about the Apple co-founder from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle, has been generating buzz as a serious Oscar contender, with attention for star Michael Fassbender‘s portrayal of the late tech titan.
Jobs’ personal and professional life have been the subject of much argumentation in recent years, as some view him as an innovative genius while others regard him as a tyrannical businessman who demanded too much of his employees.
Such controversial figures have traditionally been great Oscar fodder for filmmakers working in the biopic genre despite the negative perception many audience members may have of the films’ subjects.

Nash, who was 86, was killed alongside his 82-year-old wife Alicia when their taxi crashed in New Jersey on Sunday (May 24).

The Imitation Game features Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a mathematician and computer science pioneer who, along with his fellow code-breakers, broke the Nazi Enigma code to help end World War II. Though Turing was hailed as a hero, he was eventually arrested and prosecuted for homosexuality, along with 49,000 other British men and women. Turing chose to be chemically castrated rather than face imprisonment, so he could continue his work, and it is believed that he committed suicide a few years later. Queen Elizabeth II posthumously pardoned Turing in 2013.
On Jan. 21, Stephen Fry led a discussion about the The Imitation Game following a screening of the film for BAFTA voters, discussed Queen Elizabeth’s pardon and suggested that the 49,000 persecuted men and women should be as well. Chad Griffin, the president of Human Rights Campaign, which is honoring The Imitation Game at its Human Rights Gala on Jan.

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2011, and a great year for lesser-seen gems...
Even a cursory glance at the top 10 grossing films of 2011 reveals something strange: nine of the entries are sequels. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought the fantasy franchise to a close with a staggering $1.3bn haul. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon wasn't too far behind with just over $1.1bn. On Stranger Tides continued the Pirates Of The Caribbean series' wave of success, despite mixed reviews.
Elsewhere in the top 10, you'll find another Twilight, a fourth Mission: Impossible, a second Kung Fu Panda, a fifth Fast, another Hangover, and further Cars. Standing alone on the list is The Smurfs, the adaptation of Peyo's Belgian comic strip. In fact, 2011 saw the release of no fewer than 28 sequels - the most we've yet seen in any given year.

The Lakers did not announce financial terms, but Espn is reporting the deal was $48+ million dollars for two years. Bryant, 35, will maintain his status as the NBA's highest-paid player over the course of the extension with a nice $23.5 million in the first year and $25 million in the second year of the extension, according to the Espn source.
