Breaking Bad‘s Saul Goodman-centric spin-off will “by and large” be a prequel — yet could also flash-forward to the legal lizard’s aprés-Walter White existence.
As series creator Vince Gilligan explains to Entertainment Weekly, “[T]he wonderful thing about the fractured chronology we employed on Breaking Bad for many years is the audience will not be thrown by us jumping around in time,” as the mothership occasionally did when, for example, exploring Gus Fring’s roots or sneak-peeking Walt’s future. “So it’s possible that we may indeed do that [on Better Caul Saul], and we’ll see the past and perhaps the future.

Exclusive: Comedy veteran Laurie Metcalf is set to star opposite Jack McGee and Joey McIntyre in CBS’ new pilot for half-hour The McCarthys, from Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment. The project is being retooled as a multi-camera comedy after shooting a single-camera pilot last season. For Metcalf, the casting is formally in second position to HBO’s Getting On. Written/co-executive produced by Brian Gallivan, The McCarthys revolves around a big Irish Catholic, sports-crazed Boston clan and the gay son whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. The new project centers on an overworked father dreaming of being “on vacation all year” who decides to uproot his family from the city and move them to New Hampshire where they open a group of tourist cottages. And where they rarely, if ever, feel like they’re on vacation. Gallivan, who hails from New England (he grew up in the Boston area where he taught middle school language arts before embarking on a comedy career), will write the script and will executive produce with Gluck and Olive Bridge’s Richie Schwartz. Exclusive: The McCarthys creator Brian Gallivan has signed an overall deal with Sony TV, the studio behind the comedy pilot that remains in contention at CBS. Writer-actor-comedian Gallivan was a staff writer on Sony TV’s cult ABC comedy Happy Endings when his spec The McCarthys, with Sony TV-based Will Gluck attached as executive producer, landed at CBS with a put pilot commitment. It went to pilot, which missed the cut for a series pickup earlier this month but is being kept in consideration by CBS and may undergo some retooling. Loosely inspired by Gallivan’s life, the big family comedy revolves around an Irish-Catholic, sports-crazed Boston clan and the gay son whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. Under the overall pact at Sony, Gallivan will continue on The McCarthys, where he serves as executive producer alongside Gluck, and will develop new projects.
