- Dylan now earns well, gets a new partner and the boss's trust, so he feels ready to move into a motel and tells Norman it's time to leave Norma, suggesting she must have killed their -abusive- (step)father Sam Bates. Hearing that deputy Zack Shelby still uses Summers' belt to impose dates on Norma and keeps an Asian sex slave, which Emma is made to keep from the police 'for now', Dylan takes charge of a search in Zach's boat, where he actually finds the belt and disposes of it. A confrontation with Shelby is inevitable and bloody, while Norman refuses to let Norman go.—KGF Vissers
- "Bates Motel" - "The Truth" - April 22, 2013[/b
After learning the truth about Zack, Norma sits bereft on the motel porch. Then she gets up and runs to her car and takes off. Norman jumps in through the window. They wrestle over the wheel and she freaks out.. He throws the keys out the window. She says he can't get away with this since everyone always gets away with everything. Norman promises they will get him but they have to do it the right way.
Dylan is in the woods with the shot out truck and he calls the boss. He goes to him and tells him what happened with Ethan and how he left the hospital and that Ethan is dead. He apologizes. The boss calls it a loss and asks if Dylan would recognize the guy. Dylan tells him he ran him down. He apologizes for this as well. He is tearfully remorseful. The boss says he stepped up and did a good job and that means something to him. He explains how to dispose of Ethan's truck: driving it up to a deserted mountain road, making sure it has a full tank, and burning it up to get rid of the DNA evidence. he does this. His new partner Remo, was sent by the boss Gill to pick him up. He's a "seasoned professional." Dylan promises he will pick stuff up fast and Remo won't be sorry he's working for him. Remo says he's working for himself.
Norma brings food to the Asian girl, who has track marks all over her arms. She is sleeping. Norma regards her but can't wake her up. Emma says she has to go to the police with them or no one will believe them. Emma wants to call the FBI and move quickly. Norma and Norman argue that she needs to sleep and they're all exhausted. Norma says she will let her sleep and then make a case for her to go to the police.
Emma leaves and explains that her mom left them 8 years ago but that she has her dad. Norma says Emma deserves better and gives her a big hug. Norma calls her very brave. Emma says she just wants to do the right thing. Norma says tomorrow. Emma leaves. Norma tells Norman there's no way they're going to the police until they get Keith Summers's belt from Zack.
She tarts herself and says she has to find the belt at Zack's. Norman wants to help. Norma apologizes for not believing him about the Asian sex slave and tells Norman he means more than anything in the world to her. He asks if there's something wrong with him. She says no. Dylan comes in and finds out the truth about the girl. He says if Shelby finds out about the girl he will turn in Norma. He tells Norman to take him to the boat and he'll take care of it.
Dylan and Norman and head to Summers's boat and Dylan again tells Norman he should move in with him, there's plenty of room and money and no crazy people. Life will be peaceful and easy and normal. Norman asks what about mom. Dylan says he has to let her go or she will bring him down with her.
They head to the boat and look around for the belt. Dylan asks Norman how he thinks his father died. Norman says a shelf fell on him in the garage. Dylan asks if he really believes that since it sounds like a freak accident. Dylan thinks Norma killed him and took the insurance money. Dylan unscrews an overhead plate as they talk. Norman says it was an accident and Norma wouldn't have killed his dad. Dylan says to stop making excuses, his dad was a bastard and Norma was insane and he needs to see that. They find the belt and Dylan tells Norman to stay with him. Dylan wants to wing the belt into the water. Norman worries it will surface like the hand. Dylan says it will never be seen again and he throws the belt in the water. Norman thanks him. Dylan says it's time to go home and pack up Norman's stuff.
Meanwhile back at the motel Norma sees car lights and is excited but it's Shelby. He said he had to see her. Norma says it's a bad idea as they're supposed to be playing it safe. Shelby wants to bring her down to the motel. He senses her resistance and wonders what's wrong. She agrees to go to a room with him. Shelby bangs her from behind but she can't pretend to be into it. She says she's worried about Norman. He tells her that for 10 minutes she's off Norman duty. He hears water running through the pipes and asks who's staying here. She says no one. He goes to look. She follows him. The girl is in the shower. Zack knocks on the door. Norma claims it's one of the painters who drove up from Sacramento. He wonders why she lies. The girl opens the door, sees Zack and runs. He pushes Norma to the ground and shoots after the girl and then takes off after her.
Dylan and Norman return at that moment and Dylan breaks the news about the belt and that Norman is moving out. Norma tells them about Shelby and the girl running through the woods. She focuses on Norman moving out and asks why he would do that. Dylan and Norman try and convince her they have bigger problems. Norma says she doesn't care if Shelby comes back and kills them she wants to know why Norman would leave her. Norman asks if she killed his dad. She says no. Zack returns and makes Dylan give up his gun and, at gunpoint, shepherds them back to the house.
An agitated Zack has them all sitting at the kitchen table pointing a gun at them. He blames Norman for sticking his nose where it didn't belong. He said he would've taken care of Norma and Norman forever. Norma pleads with him saying that no one will say anything. Zack begins to hit Norma. When he is distracted Norman rushes him and disarms him. Dylan grabs Zack's gun and they have a firefight while Norma tries to wake Norman. Dylan has Shelby cornered but he runs out of bullets. He runs for cover upstairs as Shelby reloads. (They are both injured.)
Norma drags Norman out the front door and calls 911. She orders Norman to stand up right now and walk.
Dylan reloads in the bedroom as Shelby heads down the hall.
Norma gets Norman to the car but cant' find her car keys. As they're about to get out and walk she hears gunshots from the house. A figure emerges from the house. It is Shelby. He is very injured. He points the gun at them and then falls over on the stairs. Dylan runs out and Norma hugs him. He tells her they're safe.
Shelby is dead. Norma thinks Dylan should go to hospital. Norman is catatonic. Norma wonders what they'll tell the police. Dylan says they have to tell the truth. Norma says he doesn't know the whole truth. She tells him what happened the night that Sam, Norman's father Sam died.
We flash back to that night. They were fighting about money while she was ironing. Norman was in the kitchen making a smoothie with the blender to drown out the fight. Sam hit her and Norman brained him with the blender, killing him. Norman was eerily calm, catatonic. She brought him to his room and told him to lie down and then dragged the body to the garage and staged Sam's death by pulling a shelving unit down on his body. Then Norman ran into the garage and saw his dad's body. Norman banged on the bathroom door and got his mom out the shower and announced his dad was dead, apparently not remembering what happened. She held him as he cried. We come back to the present. Dylan asks what's wrong with him. She says she doesn't know but he needs to be protected and Dylan can either get out of the way or help her.
The police arrive.
