Norman is in a happy haze after his night with Bradley. It doesn't last long when he returns home to find out from Dylan that Norma is in jail for killing Keith Summers.
When Dylan and Norman go to visit her she is her typically sunny self. She refuses their offer of help. Her bail is $100,000. They want to put the motel up for collateral. She tells them to forget it and that it's a big mistake that will clear itself up. She yells at them to leave.
Norman roots through papers at the motel and Emma shows up to offer her support and condolences and says he can come stay with her. He says he wants to stay with Dylan. Even though she said not to help, Norman finds the deed and puts up the motel as collateral for her bail. Emma takes him to the bail bondsman. While they wait for him, Norman tells her he found the girl from the manga book in Shelby's basement but now he doesn't wear she is. Emma wants to go to the cops but Norman doesn't want to. He says he wants to do something to help the girl but he wants to make sure his mom is safe first. She says she gets it and then kisses him. She then asks Norman if Norma killed Keith and wouldn't blame him if she did. Norman says she didn't.
Later that night he texts with Bradley and reminisces about their night together.
Meanwhile, Dylan wanders the woods with Ethan and asks if the guys they work for can give him an advance. Ethan points out they're not a credit union and he's seen what's happened to people who owes those guys money. Dylan says he needs to get a place for himself and Norman.
Deputy Shelby brings Norma food in jail which she refuses.
The next day Norman meets his mother at the jail with flowers. She is angry at him for not being there when she was arrested. They go to see a lawyer, Rebecca Craig. She spins a defense in which Keith was trying to sabotage Norma opening the motel since the prosecution has this carpet fiber. Norma insists she didn't do it and that Keith owned the motel for 40 years and that carpet fiber proves nothing. She says she's not going to plead self defense because she didn't do it. She storms out. On the ride home, Norman points out that she's not helping herself. Norma doesn't want to hear it saying that Norman was out getting laid while all of this was happening. She then says it is all Dylan's fault an that he's trying to turn Norman against her. Norman says no one could do that. She then points out that Norman told Dylan what really happened and how could he do that. Norman says she scares him and he thinks she needs help. Norma says there is something that every mother hopes to hear. She physically kicks him out of the car, 10 miles from home.
Dylan picks him up on his motorcycle and Norman really enjoys the ride, like a puppy sticking his head out the window. It's sweet.
At home Dylan tells Norman that Norma is addicted to drama and the best thing he could do for both of them is to just walk away. Norman says he can't. Dylan asks him to move in with him, down by the beach. He says it's time to cut the cord. Norman says she can't get through it without him. Dylan says mom or not, given who she is, it's not much reason to stay.
Ethan gives Dylan $5k to get a place for himself and Norman and says he knows Dylan is good for it and will make him look good for bringing him in. A skeevy guy who owes the bosses money comes up and shoots Ethan in the neck. Dylan holds pressure on his neck and takes him to the hospital. He then takes off.
Norma meets Shelby in his car. He apologizes for having to be there when she was arrested. He says they need to not see each other for awhile, it's not safe. She gets out of the car. He grabs her and says he loves her and has been going crazy since her arrest. She kisses him. He says he will think of something. She tells him to not get caught doing something stupid.
Shelby heads to the police station and distracts the secretary while he undoes the surveillance system and grabs the carpet fiber from the evidence room. He plugs surveillance back in by the time the secretary returns.
Dylan sees Ethan's shooter in an alley and runs him down.
At school, Emma does research about the girl from the manga sketchbook an figures out where she might be being held.
Norma gets a call from her lawyer telling her it's over, that the carpet sample is missing and without that evidence they have no case.
Norman calls Bradley and leaves a message checking in. He hasn't heard from her since that night apparently. He says he knows she's busy but to give him a call to let him know she's okay.
Norma shares the good news with Norman. He calls it a miracle. She says she's pretty sure it was Zack. He asks what he's going to make her do for this favor and storms out. As he does Emma is pulling up with her news. He says he just needs to get of there.
They drive out to a waterfront park. She starts telling him her detective story and he keeps checking his phone. He tells her he's "with Bradley" now. Emma says it doesn't mean anything, it was just a hook-up. She's hurt but she is right. She figures that if the girl was held at the motel, maybe Keith Summers was in on it. Now that Keith is dead she figured Shelby stashed the girl on Keith's boat. They go to the boat, break in, and find her. She is, understandably, freaked out and practically feral. They bring her to the motel. Norma comes out of the office and sees Emma's car and finds them. Norma doesn't believe him. The girl tells Norma that Shelby kept her in his house and forced her to have sex with him. Norma can't believe it was Zack who did this. She shows her a picture of Zack and she confirms it was him who kept her. Norman apologizes to her. Norma can't process it all.
