- Tobias Smith: Other than some food, and half a day's work from your slaves. What else do you think happened today?
- Tobias Smith: I said words. I changed their perception of their situation. Other than that, nothing else happened.
- Tobias Smith: Man is a complicated beast. To master him, you must use sophisticated methods.
- Tobias Smith: Regardless of scale, the game Mr Jones, is still the same. The game is still the same.
- Samuel: Why should we obey their rules? We didn't agree to this. They forced this upon us. They have tricked you into thinking that choosing your own master, is the same as being free.
- Samuel: Don't you see what... what's going on? We're no better off than we were before. They let us complain and--and make suggestions but, they never really change anything. They let us choose between Master Jones and Mr Johnson. What's the difference? They still make all the rules. Punish us if we disobey. We... we still do all the work. They come and take as much as they want. And they give us just enough. Just enough, that we don't rise up, or run away. Slave... to work. The way I see it is, they just change the words they use. Nothing is really changed, we are all still slaves.
- Martha: Tomorrow, we won't wake up as scared wretched slaves, but as free people with hope and a future. A new normal for us all.
- Tobias Smith: You can control a man for a period with brute violence, but you cannot truly OWN a man unless he thinks your word is law, and that he must obey--and is virtuous for doing so.
- Tobias Smith: To cover a man's face, takes away his voice, his identity. Even with animals, covering the face tends to make them docile and passive. Charles was ready to accept his fate once he got that muzzle on.
- Tobias Smith: One lie leads to another, and a thousand more lies. Keep giving them an ounce of hope and a pound of fear, and they'll continue to believe every lie until they're dead in the ground.
- Tobias Smith: I've already laid the foundation. Just keep pushing the idea that the Jones Plantation represents safety, prosperity and freedom.
- Jimmy Jack: I know you hate me, and I can see that. But I'm just doing my job. But kids... I never mess with kids. There's some dark things going on in this plantation. You watch out for yourself.
