A Wonderfully Crafted Episode That Our Watch Group Hated
Sarah42324 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I asked this when Hoyt died: how do you rate a wonderfully crafted, fast paced, superbly acted episode that wipes out a character you've grown to love in an--admittedly short--time?

Julia was strong, independent, and a cut above any of the other women we've seen with Cordi since his wife died (laden with baggage in my beloved Twyla's case; laden with baggage, overall plot damage, and general weakness in Geri's)

Julia was barely with us, but I could see the potential of her--smart like Emily, but perhaps less willing to settle down/be on our screens all the time.

The preview accurately mirrors the level of Cordell's anger in what looks like a revenge redux. He was already hallucinating seeing his Emily earlier and is doubly triggered now, seeing his current lover cruelly gone.

It was a blow.

But we've had others.

So, yes, I cried and was upset, but figured it was on me to shake it off For drama. For art. (Grumbling incoherently in upset viewer, meanwhile)

---

HOWEVER, perhaps to my discredit, I didn't at first consider the truth my friend spoke.

A woman of color was fridged for man pain and plot fodder. When my friend said THAT, I had to stop.

The only thing worse would be if they'd have shown she was turned by Gray Flag before she died. (My friend is still worried Lana might be a plant that gets pinned for the betrayals.)

Therefore, on reflection, I'm not sure that even a diverse writers room can be given a pass for how this plot twisted.

That's been our debate the last hour.

Could she truly not be fridged? Did we not see her truly dead? Those would be the only saving graces, which I don't think will come.

---

In the case of Hoyt, I rated the ep more in line with the overall craft shown by the creatives.

But in this case, I really do feel both that they wiped a woman of color off the table for plot and perhaps even worse.

I loved Hoyt more, maybe, but that loses stars around here.
