- In what looks like a gangland crime - two hoodies are shot at close range. But an un-connected crime sees Luther make a un-connected connection that might provide the real answer to what happened.
- Still fishing for dirt on Luther, the desperate Gray and Stark visit Mary, suggesting that Luther killed his wife. However Gray begins to sense that Stark is getting out of control in his desire for revenge and confides in Ripley. Meanwhile a young couple are saved from an attack by thugs by a mysterious man who shoots two of the assailants dead. Both of the dead pair are convicted killers and later another man who had been charged with murder is found hanged. Through a website, Luther discovers the perpetrator to be Tom Marwood, taking revenge on killers freed by the system - such as the murderer of his wife Caitlin. He next abducts a paedophile Dennis Cochran, whom - following a public vote of approval on the Internet - he hangs. Luther and Ripley track him down but he steals Luther's phone and shoots Ripley before making his escape.—don @ minifie-1
- Luther investigates the deaths of two muggers who were killed by a vigilante while the muggers were in the process of attacking a young couple who were sitting in their car. The killer taped messages to the mouths of the muggers. The victims have little interest in helping the police arrest the man who saved them and they soon have another dead body - also with a message taped to his mouth - hanging in Hampton Woods. The vigilante - who is soon identified as Tom Marwood - broadcasts a message over the Internet demanding justice for his wife who was raped and murdered 4 years ago. Luther knows they have little time to stop him. Marwood's next 'execution' will be very public. Meanwhile, Gray and Stark visit Luther's new girlfriend Mary. They seem intent on destroying his reputation. Gray is beginning to doubt Stark's methods.—garykmcd
- A man and a woman meet at a party and drive off together afterwards. They park the car and begin to kiss. But their car is set upon by a large group of men wearing hooded sweatshirts. The men begin pounding on the windows and rocking the car. They then smash the windows using baseball bats and hammers and drag the couple out. While one of them carries the woman off and steals her purse the others beat the man. Just them an older man in a dark coat walks up. Some of the hoodlums notice him and confront him. When one of them, Sean Butler, tries to attack the older man with a hammer he pulls out a shotgun and shoots him dead. The older man orders the other hoodlums to pull down their hoods and then chases after them as they run.
The next morning, Ripley stops by Luther's apartment. Luther invites him inside, something he's never done before. In the living room is Mary Day, wearing a shirt but no pants, having obviously spent the night. Luther introduces the two of them telling Mary that Justin is "my mate, and I love him." He kisses Mary goodbye and goes to work.
Luther and Ripley respond to the crime scene where Schenk gives them the run down. In addition to Shaun Butler, another one of the hoodlums, Shaun Meredith, was killed also. Schenk tells them that six years ago, Meredith had been charged with murdering a solicitor but he walked away from the charges. Both bodies have a leaflet placed over the mouth bearing the words "www.for-caitlin.com". Schenk tells Luther that there's no Caitlin connected to the young couple who were attacked or to the murdered solicitor. Ripley tells Luther that the web site mentioned is supposed to go live in two hours. Schenk says they cannot trace it because it's being hosted in Uzbekistan. Ripley says that hundreds of the website leaflets have been found around town.
Luther interviews Maxine, the woman who was attacked. She tells him that the man told her not to be afraid and that he had a kind voice. She says that the man stayed and held Callum's hand until the ambulance arrives. When Luther asks her to describe the man she refuses, saying that the man saved her and Callum's life and she would rather go to prison than identify him.
Stark and Gray meet with Mary Day to try and question her about Luther. To try and get her to help them they give her the file they have on Luther.
Ripley has been going through files trying to find a Caitlin who might be motivating the killer. He's found fourteen possible Caitlins and tells Luther it's unsettling to read about all these crimes happening to people with the same name. Luther tells Ripley that it's probably time he moved on, that Ripley should be doing Luther's job. They're interrupted by Schenk who tells them to get to Hamlyn woods immediately. There the two find a man hanged with another "www.for-caitlin.com" leaflet on his mouth. Ripley explains that the man is Liam Glass a crack addict and career arsonist who had made the tabloids after he sat by and did nothing as his cousin and his cousin's wife starved and beat a four year old girl to death. Luther observes that the killer is murdering people who the justice system has "spat out."
The web site goes live and the killer posts a video explaining the Caitlin was his wife, who was murdered by a criminal who was released on probation halfway through a nine year sentence for a violent robbery. He describes the justice system as having failed to protect people from predators and says that it's time for that failure to end.
Ripley identifies the killer as Tom Marwood, an architect. After his wife was murdered, Marwood joined a gun club and began taking martial arts courses. Luther tells Schenk that Marwood has probably gone off the grid and that the only way to find him is to catch him where he's going to be next. He suggests finding "the ten most debased scumbags in London" and putting them under surveillance in hopes of catching Marwood. Ripley suggests coordinating the nature of the criminal offense with the volume of press coverage.
Distraught by what she's seen in the file, Mary calls Luther. She tells him that Gray and Stark came around and says she needs to meet him. When she tells him she's at work he says he's coming over, but Mary insists that they meet in a public place. When they do meet, Mary asks him how his wife, Zoe, died. Luther tells her that she was "taken, by a friend of mine." He tells Mary that whatever Gray and Schenk said they were lying, but Mary tells him to stay away from her.
Stark gets a call from Luther who asks for a meeting. Gray tells Stark she's scared of what their investigation is turning into. When they meet, Luther tells Stark that Mary is off limits or else. Stark says "or else what? I reap the whirlwind?" He says that Luther's problem is that he's spent all his life thinking he's the whirlwind while in reality Stark is the whirlwind.
Marwood tracks another victim. He forces his way into the man's flat at gunpoint and is prepared to shoot him. Just then his phone rings. Luther is calling Marwood's brother in law Alan Ramsey, who Marwood had been in contact with before the crime spree. Marwood has cloned Ramsey's phone and listens in to the conversation as Luther arranges a meeting with Ramsey.
Luther goes to Alan Ramsey's junkyard to interview him. He doesn't find Ramsay but is instead ambushed by Marwood, who holds him at gunpoint. When Luther runs, Marwood shoots at him. After a brief chase, Marwood catches Luther and makes him give over his phone and wallet. Marwood reminds Luther than one in five murders is committed by someone on parole. He says that what he wants to do is stop these men before they commit more crimes. Luther says that he might not disagree with Marwood's motive, but does disagree with his means. When marwood asks whether Luther has ever been tempted to take personal justice, Luther says that it's not his right to do so. Marwood then asks for two days to do what needs to be done. Luther says he can't do that and warns Marwood that he will end up dead if he continues down this road. Marwood says that he died the day he found his wife's corpse. After Marwood leaves, Luther returns to the junkyard and finds Ramsey tied up in the office. Ramsey insists he didn't call his brother in law.
Gray meets with Ripley and admits that she may have "taken a wrong turn." Before they can discuss it further, Ripley gets a call from Luther. As he leaves he suggests that they meet for a drink to discuss the situation.
Luther goes to Mary's shop and apologizes to her for her having seen about his wife's murder. He tells her that what Gray and Stark told her were lies and she asks him for the truth. Luther says he's not sure if that's a good idea but Mary presses him and he agrees to tell her the whole truth. Just then he gets a call from Schenk who tells him that a sex offender named Dennis Cochrane, who was on their list of possible victims, was abducted a few hours before. Luther gives Mary a key to his flat and she says she'll be there when he gets back.
Luther and Ripley meet at Cochrane's flat. Luther says that the MO doesn't fit with the previous crimes. Marwood killed Butler and Meredith right away but has abducted Cochrane. He also notices that Cochrane's keys are missing and wonders why.
Marwood's web site hosts another video. This one with Cochrane confessing to his crimes. The video then asks viewers to decide Cochrane's fate by midnight. Luther informs Schenk that there's no way they'll find Marwood before midnight and suggests using the media to try and influence Marwood.
Luther and Ripley track down Kiera Mills, Dennis Cochrane's victim. Luther tells Kiera that this is the hardest thing he's ever asked someone to do but he wants her to plead for Cochrane's life. They then track down Gordon Murray, a friend of Cochrane's and a fellow sex offender. They say they think Marwood may have taken Cochrane to a place where he and other sex offenders committed their crimes and asks him where it is.
As they are talking to Murray, Kiera Mills appears on tv. She explains that eighteen years ago, Dennis Cochrane abducted her from the back of her mother's car and raped her. Kiera begins to break down and says she wants to send a message to the man who has Dennis Cochrane. After a hesitation she says "that message is: kill him!" Luther angrily grabs Murray and threatens him. After being slapped around some, Murray tells Luther that he and Cochrane used to meet at a warehouse in Horsemongers lane.
At the warehouse, Marwood, who had been watching Kiera's appeal, prepares to hang Cochrane. He forces the man to stand on a stepladder and puts a noose around his neck. Then he takes a picture of him with his cell phone and tweets his location. As Ripley and Luther rush there a crowd begins to gather. Marwood, opens the doors to the warehouse, displaying Cochrane, ready to be executed. The crowd grows impatient and begins yelling for Marwood to get on with it. As Luther rushes up, Marwood kicks the ladder out from under Cochrane and runs away. Marwood watches as Luther runs up and grabs Cochrane, propping up his body. Members of the crowd begin to assault Luther and Marwood runs away. As he continues to try and save Cochrane, Luther orders Ripley to run after Marwood. Reinforcements arrive and break up the riot. Luther orders them to cut down Cochrane and runs after Marwood.
Ripley corners Marwood in an alley. Marwood holds him at gunpoint and tells him to back off. Ripley says he can't do that. That if he lets Marwood go and things go on someone innocent will get hurt and he won't be able to live with that. Marwood says that won't happen but Ripley insists that it will and that Marwood has made his point. Ripley explains that they're on the same side and that he doesn't think Marwood will shoot him. Marwood begs for him to leave and Ripley refuses. After an anguished moment, Marwood shoots Ripley in the chest and flees. Luther arrives to find Justin shot and holds him while he dies, begging him to get up.
Mary watches news reports of the riot on tv and Marwood phones Luther and leaves a message, blaming him for what happened and saying that he's now made Marwood his enemy. Mary hears something at Luther's apartment. When she looks out the window she sees Marwood standing below. Marwood racks his shotgun.
