June Diane Raphael and Jessica St. Clair launched their podcast, The Deep Dive, in the midst of the pandemic as a way to compensate for the loneliness and disconnect of lockdown.
Each week, the two longtime friends and creative collaborators discuss their pursuit of joy amid a bevy of challenges both relatable (motherhood, aging) and aspirational (finding the correct poolside attire for Miami Beach Pride). Doing the podcast helped lift the actresses out of their own post-lockdown voids, and their motto — “Let Us Live!” — echoes through Apple reviews posted by their ever-expanding listening community.
When the abrupt work stoppage of this summer’s double strike threatened to trigger a similar existential crisis, they were ready with an antidote: They launched the Deep Dive Academy of Significance.
“We started a virtual school, and that is one of the most insane things I think I have ever said,” St. Clair says with a laugh.

Welcome to My Favorite Moment! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
If Lennon Parham is on TV fans are going to be laughing.
The actress has been a scene stealer for years on everything from “Veep” to “Playing House.” On HBO Max’s “Minx,” which premiered in March, Parham is as hilarious as ever, but also unexpectedly moving in her role as Shelly, a stay-at-home mom turned porn magazine editor/focus group/all-around supporter. Season 1 centered on Shelly’s sister, Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), and her decision to partner with a publisher (Jake Johnson) to print her feminist manifesto/pornography magazine, Minx.

Melanie Frankel is leaving ABC Signature where she served as head of comedy for the past two years. According to sources, Frankel opted to depart before the end of her contract. She has not yet decided what she will do next. Meanwhile, ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios, is searching for a new head of comedy, with Frankel staying on as a consultant until a replacement is found.
Frankel, then VP Current at ABC Studios, was named head of comedy for the studio (later renamed ABC Signature) in September 2019 in the first major executive appointment for Jonnie Davis after he became ABC Studios president. Most of Frankel’s tenure was during the pandemic, which altered the broadcast development cycle. None of ABC Signature’s 2021 comedy pilots were picked up to series but most had been put in development and sold before Frankel took the top comedy job.

Erick Morillo, the producer and DJ known for the 1993 number “I Like To Move It” that was featured in Madagascar, was found dead Tuesday morning in his Miami Beach home. He was 49. A cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
The musician, who was arrested in August and charged with sexual battery in December, was set to appear in court on Friday, Miami’s Local 10 reported.
Morillo was born in New York and began making music in the early 1990s as Reel 2 Real. In 1993, the musician collaborated with Trinidadian singer Mad Stuntman for his 1993 hit “I Like To Move It,” which helped Morillo leave his mark on the music scene. The iconic house song was first featured in Party Girl in 1995 and a number of titles before the early aughts.

Its economic message might be fuzzy. Its feminism, too. But best-friend comedy “Like a Boss” rides Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrnes’s frisky and believable chemistry to laughs — some worn, some crude, but more than a few delivered deftly and consistently enough to keep audiences smiling if not doubled over.
The two share the house Mia inherited, the one where Mel came to live as a teen when her own family cratered. They were enterprising girls who grew into inventive businesswomen, all the while remaining best friends. They complete each other. Yes, in the rom-com sense, the film — directed by Miguel Arteta — makes clear. Friendship can be one of the great romances, after all.
Owners of their own cosmetics line and boutique, Mia and Mel’s deep affection is tested when cosmetics titan Claire Luna, played by Salma Hayek, swoops in to invest in their self-named company. They are nearly $500,000 in debt,...

Since “Veep” series creator Armando Iannucci left the presidential series after its fourth season, television has been longing for his very particular brand of satire. Finally, that longing has been answered: HBO just dropped the official teaser trailer for his latest satire, space comedy “Avenue 5.”
Starring “Veep” alumnus and all-around comedy veteran Hugh Laurie, “Avenue 5” is “set in the future, mostly in space” onboard the titular Avenue 5 space ship. Laurie plays Ryan Clark, captain of the Avenue 5, who — as you can see from the trailer below, set to Harry Nilsson’s “Spaceman” — knows how to charm any passenger who takes up residency on his ship, even in major crisis time. He also knows how to pull off an empty space captain one-liner in any situation, whether it’s “fly safe, fly true,” “let’s keep our eyes on the prize,” or “set your phasers to fun.”

HBO has ordered a new comedy series by creator Armando Iannucci, who also created Veep, that will take place 40 years in the future, when space tourism is all the rage.
The series will star Hugh Laurie (House) as the Space Captain Ryan Clark, of the Avenue 5, as well as the hilarious Josh Gad and Zach Woods. The cast will also include Nikki Amuka-Bird (Gold Digger), Rebecca Front (Inspector Lewis), Lenora Crichlow (Being Human), Suzy Nakamura, and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager).
Now that Veep is in its last season, it’s kind of perfect that fans will have a new comedy series by the same creator. The cast is solid and has a great record in comedy. I am excited to see this series when it starts. Avenue 5 is currently in pre-production, but we will let you know when we get a trailer and release date.

“Why are women better suited to the con than men?” “Because we’re used to faking it?” “Because no man will ever believe a woman is smarter than he is.”
Here’s a fun trailer for the remake of the 1988 crime comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Hustle. The original starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as “two con men [who] try to settle their rivalry by betting on who can swindle a young American heiress out of $50,000 first.” The Hustle is following suit as far as plot goes, and has changed up the gender roles this time around. Anne Hathaway is moving on from box office dud “Serenity” with what should be a summer comedy hit thanks to “The Hustle.” MGM has debuted the first trailer for the comedy, which pairs the Oscar winner with “Pitch Perfect” favorite Rebel Wilson for a female-powered “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” remake.
“The Hustle” stars Hathaway and Wilson as “female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them,” reads the official synopsis. The supporting cast includes Alex Sharp, Tim Black Nelson, Ingrid Oliver, and Emma Davies. The script was written by Jac Schaeffer and it was her launching pad to getting an even bigger gig, as she’s now writing Scarlett Johansson’s standalone Black Widow movie for Marvel and Disney.

When “RuPaul’s Drag Race” launched on Logo a decade ago, it was watched by so few people that the inaugural run was later lovingly dubbed “The Lost Season.” But as the years and seasons of that reality competition series went on, its popularity grew exponentially and its influence subsequently spread over other parts of the entertainment industry — from a sketch on “Saturday Night Live,” to seeing the queens who had come through the competition guest star on scripted television shows including “Playing House” and “Room 104,” to having drag performers become integral talent on the big screen.
“It’s this whole new economy and business that has come out of this show — and an economy and a business that are shining a light on artists that are heroes,” “Drag Race” executive producer Randy Barbato told Variety last year. “It’s not an easy gig, being a drag queen.”
