A big program about little birds!
The producers of Nature have done it again, with another excellent episode this season.

I have always been fascinated by hummingbirds, even though the only species I have in my area is the ruby-throated hummingbird. As amazing as the ones in my backyard are, the variety of different species in Costa Rica is amazing and their beautiful evolutions to match with specific plant species is fascinating.

These little birds are amazing in both their complexity as well as their strength and long migrations across harsh environments. I hope we as a species do everything we can to conserve them, so thank you Nature for highlighting these fascinating but imperiled birds.

Costa Rica has its native hummingbirds but is also blessed as North Americas winter destination for hummers. We've been interested in these birds for years (we have several feeders and volunteer at a hummingbird festival) and have watched a lot of specials devoted to them. However, the diversity portrayed in this episode is staggering.

It also covers some of the environment they live in as well as their animal neighbors. Their role in sustaining the lush tropical vegetation is also covered - allowing other species to thrive, even arguing that the hummer provides the environment which allows other species to live/thrive.

Hummingbirds in Costa Rica.

Ever since my first encounter with Hummingbirds about 20 years ago in Estes Park, Colorado, I have been fascinated with them. Living in the migratory path of Ruby Throats I put out feeders every springtime and every late summer and still enjoy observing them. To my thinking, probably the most rugged bird, gram for gram, of them all.

This documentary, which aired recently on PBS, focuses on Hummingbirds in Costa Rica and how they facilitate the ecosystem. In fact, it is fair to say that if Hummingbird populations had never arisen there the ecosystem would look much different. This documentary covers all aspects of that.

A very worthwhile program.
