The knot and PQ 17
elcoat3 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I understand an American film distributor has picked it up. I took my children over here - son 15 daughter 13 - to see it yesterday, and we all liked it. Afterwards, over pizza, I filled them in on the background of Convoy PQ 17 and - not in the film - how the massacre led to bitter recriminations between our American and the British naval high commands.

I believe Admiral Pound was just mentally exhausted - I understand he died of brain cancer a year or so later - and fearful of exactly that kind of inter-Allied blowup ... and so, ironically, caused it.

For those who don't know, as the film described the convoy was ordered to scatter ... to fall easy victims to u-boats and bombers ... because the heavy German ships superbattleship Tirpitz, pocket battleships Luetzow (which ran onto a Norwegian rock and had to return - those sneaky Norwegian trolls! -) and Scheer, heavy cruiser Hipper, and some fleet destroyers were putting to sea, and they would have been more than a match (as we have verified in more than one naval miniatures wargame) for our heavy cruiser covering force: USSs Tuscaloosa and Wichita and HMSs London and Norfolk and a few destroyers.

However, there was also our battleship force with Duke of York and our own Washington with its crushing 16"/400mm guns firing 1-ton shells which would have sunk Tirpitz forthwith.

The Admiralty suddenly decided the battleships were too far back and recalled all the warships, leaving the merchant ships to their fate, well-described in the film.

Our - anti-British anyway, thanks to unpleasant relations during World War 1 - Chief of Naval Operations Adm King just BLEW UP and pulled Washington out and into the Pacific, where it then saved our Marines on Guadalcanal, easily pounding Japanese battle cruiser Kirishima under the waves in Nov42.

There was a lot of crew melodrama in the film, but merchant vessels were not under military discipline, and crew members could be very diverse. The film does get across that it was a very human, personal struggle/war.

And the film did bring out well the captain's dedication to getting the war supplies through to the "Soviets," because they were fighting for Norway's liberation as well as their own survival.

In contrast, the first mate - traumatized by the loss of his own ship and friends previously with many dying before rescue - is looking for reasons to cancel out.

Someone else has talked about the floating mines scene, and my son and I both wondered who had tied Isaksen's knot? This does get across how much ship crew members depend on each other for their lives.

I would have had 1 of the 2 German JU88 bombers leaving damaged. As someone else described, an apparently undamaged u-boat surfacing in the middle of the convoy before it was scattered made no sense. Our Liberty ships had 4"/105mm surface guns on their fantails which could have made short work of it.

And the ship's escape&evasion stratagem was in fact innovatively used by Royal Navy Lieutenant Leo Gradwell for his anti-sub trawler Ayrshire and the 3 freighters they took under their care ... and worked too.

Finally, if you look on Wiki's Convoy PQ 17 Order of Battle, you'll see there was no Norwegian warship *or freighter* involved in it.

But the film's artistic license is OK, helping Norwegian viewers identify with the struggle, and other convoys out on the Atlantic ordered to scatter would have inevitably had Norwegian ships.

(In my game design research, I've found Norwegian Noreg and Mirio *were* on Arctic convoys.)

And the statement that of 30,000 Norwegian merchant sailors in the war 4,000 died was important to get across.

This is a kind of "Das Boot" for the other side, and it should be seen.

Lou Coatney, and I have many free/educational print-and-play boardgames on my webpage, including Murmansk Run, and I'm working up a simpler little Postcard Murmansk.

Konvoi -A slight Improvement since Narvik...
KFstudios200927 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Konvoi is based on a historical moment of World War II in Norway, where cargo ships were transporting material to the Soviet Union. Since "Narvik" that debuted in Norwegian theaters last year, Norway has continued to make productions for big movies for every upcoming year (At least it looks like it). Konvoi was a decent film with a great presented story, but it had many unfinished details that let the rating down. But let's start with the pros. Great scenography, the convoy was well adapted to how cargo ships looked back in time, and overall nice territorial presentation. The story was well introduced as well, with great development and it continued the suspense greatly. The acting was basic, but I got to admit that the captains in the film (Mork and Skar) were well performed and they did have the right tone for the atmosphere. By the way, I got to say that I have mixed feelings about the characters in here. Three people died in total, and I didn't care about them at all. The story maker should have killed a more important person, because I can't feel connected to the rest and then I feel less worried about the situation. Konvoi is suffering of its up and downs, too. Some moments are totally entertaining and well directed, while others feel unfinished and unnecessary. The ending was quite random, and I wished that it could be more smooth, and not finishing so abruptly. The camera filming is also something to pick on. I understand that the action happens on the water, and they wanted to show realistic moving effect. Sometimes it was too much. I wished they could have more nice and court filming, especially when they weren't moving, for example when they were on the ice. On the action sequences, the ideas for filming were turned on, and I liked the different perspectives and fast filming motions. To summarize, Konvoi was an average war film that entertains, but has its up and downs. Could have been better.

Historically valuable, but that's all
pedersenlarsc25 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie with my teenagers of 14 and 16 years age. They found it very interesting, and there was a lot about the civilian effort in the sea (from Norwegians in particular) that they didn't know from before.

Me, however, who is a film buff was quite disappointed.

Too many random technical and tactical blunders (like the submarine surfacing completely in the middle of the convoy) ruined the "war" aspect of this film for me.

The drama part, the friction between the captain and his 2nd in command was just not intense enough to leave me with a strong impression of a quality movie.

The movie would however be great for youth who can benefit from learning about this topic from a feature film.

Konvoi bluray review
Cryptonissen8 April 2024
Watched the movie on bluray (upscaled to 4k), the movie was ok, abit overhyped in Norwegian media, they portray it as the best war movie ever made. The vfx/special effects looks very high quality, there are some scenes that have that fake look from cgi, but most people likely won't see it. The movie should have been longer, the story was cut short at the end of the movie and other scenes. Maybe it was a budget decision, many Norwegian movies always end the movie to early and we don't to see the ending and only get the ending in text. Also wish they would release this movie in 4k bluray, but there's little to none Nordic movies released in 4k format sadly.

Disappointing
janottaro27 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie certainly works fine as entertainment for people devoid of maritime knowledge. Visually, it is well-crafted, and it looks and sounds really good. However, it is filled with logical flaws, and many sequences come across as ridiculous.

The crew lacked credibility and generally appeared like headless chickens without purpose or direction.

In the sequence where they encountered a field of drifting mines, the captain ordered a full stop even though the distance between the mines was significant enough to navigate between them easily. Anyone with sea experience knows that losing propulsion means losing control. They then hung climbing nets from the bow, and two young men had to climb down to push away the mines approaching with boat hooks. How is it possible that the boat and the mines drift in opposite directions?

I estimate that the mines were drifting towards the boat at a speed of about one and a half knots, but when one of the men fell into the sea from the bow, he was propelled backward along the ship's side at a speed of at least five knots, and disappeared.

Once again, a disappointing Norwegian war film where the filmmakers take liberties without seeking expertise from experienced individuals. It's understandable that one needs to embellish the plot to make things exciting, but it's entirely possible to achieve this without sacrificing realism and credibility.

For those without maritime experience, it probably works just fine.

Not as good as i expected
Goettschwan11 February 2024
While a huge improvement over movies like Kampen om Narvik, it is obvious that this movie got rewritten several times and changed direction. While the movie still manages to have a grip on the audience in terms of suspense, some of its plot points do not hold up well. It seems the movie went from the idea of a captivating war movie to budget restraints, forcing the movie makers to focus on interpersonal differences between the captain and his crew. That is something i feel detracts from the story, and it also is writing that has been done to death in other movies like Crimson tide. All in all, if you want to see a bit of WWII action, watch this, but if you rather would like something more believable and historically more accurate, then watch Krigsseileren any day over this.

Great Movie About Unknown Heroes of WW2!
itriatay99511 May 2024
Das Boot Franchise has greatly interested me in WWII naval warfare. I had to wait almost 8 months to watch the Konvoi. Tobias Santelmann is one of the leading actors in Norway. There are many TV series where you can watch him with different roles such as being a Viking leader, a serial killer, or a murder suspect who belongs to the LGBT community. Hence, Santelmann is really a gifted actor. In this movie, he is AWESOME because he portrays a second captain on a cargo ship that is trying to send supplies to the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. This movie is a gem and watch it because you learn things about the unknown heroes of WW2.
