Where Dreams Begin is awakening memories decades ago
audrey-094083 June 2023
I'm a baby boomer so this drama revives my memories of those youthful years, where naivety, hope for the future, romance is aptly depicted in the drama. The lead actor, Xiao Zhan has brought out his character vividly as the strong leader with his cool-headed rationale and great camaraderie around the group. I've watched the 5 & 6 episodes and the drama has unfolded that young people already see opportunities in South China, Shenzhen is mentioned, and some are willing to go for their adventures. We are also looking at the cultural and normal practices in China from an overseas perspective, that is, you have to have some "connections" for career, medical accessibility etc.. which most of the time we took it for granted in our own country.

Looking forward to this drama on how China became the manufacturer of the world in the coming decades and Xiao Zhan's character progresses into the fast paced 80s and how his life unfolds.

Never thought I will love this drama since I don't like the genre normally
winterkoy3 June 2023
The drams is actually good, the male lead is very good and the rest of the actors/actresses. It was fast paced and no fillers so far and no cheesy romantic slow motion camera work which I hate in any drama!

I just thought strange that the main female lead was hardly seen in the first few episode though I sort of like it since it does not go with the norm. I am not sure if the drama is exactly what it was during the 70's in Beijing but so far I liked the plot and hopefully the drama will not change its tone all the way to the last episode like other Chinese and Korean dramas that I have watched.

Dream a 40 Year Dream (8.5/10)
ENIGMA0522 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Only watched this for Xiao Zhan as I'm not a fan of heavy propaganda dramas usually from any country. I also have seen both LQ and LRL in other dramas and knew they were good actors and could handle pretty much any role. When I do these reviews, it's always from not just an audience member standpoint, but also as a writer/author. So I am impartial to everyone and everything. I don't like the new title of the drama so to me it's always been "Where Dreams Began" and here XZ aka XCS dreamed a 40 year dream.

Pros: This series had a great flowing storyline where you didn't have any filler feeling episodes except for maybe the final 2. Favorite characters were tied with the leads; XCS and TXM or LQ. But at the same time they were also in the cons which I'll explain below. XCS was a man who unwaveringly followed his ideals even when more experienced in life people told him that his ideals would make him lose and regret those who felt inferior to him. After he overcame his physical disability post war, he was even stronger mentally. TXM was the epitome of quiet strength. She was his rock, his anchor even when they weren't yet together, before he realized any of it. Women like her are incredibly inspirational. Not only did she push him but herself.

Many people didn't like YGH and HHL due to their selfishness and cowardice but I did because they were the two morally gray ones in this story. Characters can't just be black or white, they need layers, to be able to evolve in whichever direction. We wouldn't necessarily want them in our lives but as characters on the screen, they were fascinating. The rest of the crew of QT, YQ, YF, DL, Amao, the other guy whose name I don't recall, plus certain parents, uncle Dong were all very awesome characters and all of the actors whether I found their characters necessary or should have left sooner, did a superb job. CHJ was actually the best antagonist out of the batch because you saw his corruption over time as opposed to Heizi, who though I liked as a greedy, money hungry character was too repetitive in his crimes and just came off as downright stupid.

Sets, costumes, OSTs, accents all of that was appropriate for whichever time period you were in.

Cons: Though they were trying to portray the 70s and onward over there as best as they could, much was unrealistic. Though I loved both XCS and TXM, as someone else mentioned in the comments, these characters don't exist in real life. They are too perfect in their ideology and no one on earth is flawless. They came off as their own versions of Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Trying to portray that in a slice of life type of story, essentially takes away from that slice of life. LSY was just there for too long and got away with too much. The actor did well but to have him constantly let go or wriggle out of the law while other people like QT who did legal work lost everything wasn't fair. It made the law look useless especially in such a high propaganda filled series. Those two just didn't jive. The constant nepotism became nauseating.

I will speak about the propaganda; I knew what I was going to watch but what--as someone who was also born in a socialist/communist country which no longer exists so I actually know what I'm talking about--kept throwing me off and having the scenes take a hit, was not that it was used but WHERE. In all of the military, government related and whatnot scenes, totally understandable. But when the characters are just having fun together shooting the breeze or being romantic with their significant others and the speechifying starts, it is eye roll worthy because literally no one did that ever in any country. When there are family gatherings or two neighbors meet up or something everyday, propaganda speeches do not happen. You'd sooner ask about a child's health or if they went to the movies, so that's where it was way too much.

The fact that there were multiple time jumps and we never knew where we were. It could be anywhere from a few months to a few years. One viewer had to research and write out a timeline in the comments. People shouldn't have to do that when watching a series; a small note on the screen would have sufficed. The SARS epidemic in the final two episodes was also unnecessary. They could've wrapped it all up nicely around the CNY episodes because otherwise it felt like this plot was just chucked in there last minute and was quite rushed.

Would I recommend it? If you are a fan of any of the actors and like a nice flowing storyline until that end. I think all of the actors did a superb job; very pleased with that.

After watching 6 episodes
risaky2 June 2023
I've been waiting for this drama since the moment it started filming, so I was looking forward to it a lot, but I didn't expect it to fall in love with it so deeply. It's really a great drama. All the characters have their own stories and struggles. You can't hate any character because each one has its own reason. It's a drama I haven't missed a second of. It's simply worth all the time and effort. No wonder it's receiving so much attention even though it aired yesterday. I'm looking forward to every next episode. Finally, thank you Xiao Zhan for choosing to play this character. I found a drama with amazing people.

A fascinating trip through China after the Cultural Revolution
AHatFullofSky2 June 2023
A rarely seen period of Chinese history, right after the Cultural Revolution throughout the next few decades is shown to us through the ups and downs of the main character, Xiao Chunsheng, and the people whose lives intersect with his. Written and produced by people who have lived it all in Beijing, it has a very authentic feel that will give us a glimpse of China of that time and the huge expansion that ultimately followed.

The characters are individual and distinct, with their own histories, joys and hurts. There is no exaggeration in emotion or situation. It is a realistic portrait of humans who are struggling to make the best possible decisions in trying times. The director and scriptwriter have a delicate, subtle touch as they weave this story of showing us who these characters are and what place shaped them so.

Led by a great performance of the Chinese star Xiao Zhan, who masterfully depicts the maturation and development of Chunsheng, the whole cast gives an excellent performance while bringing this era to life before our eyes. They wander the streets of Beijing, fall in love, struggle, fall and get up after life inevitably strikes them down, all accompanied by a magnificent instrumental BGM that provides an appropriate sense of nostalgia. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

A must watch
zgkrqcz2 June 2023
This period drama has characters that feel real and are insanely charming in their own ways. No one feels like they were written. They feel like they had indeed lived during this period of change in the 1970s China. Their struggles and emotions mirror what many face even today but the setting makes the story even more unique. The casting is phenomenal as each actor chosen are serious actors. Not the usual dribble found in Chinese idol dramas. As an adult this drama hits home on many levels. As a child I probably wouldn't be able to relate but as a working adult who has gone through my own growth I can empathize for the characters and understand their struggles.

Where Dreams Begin is a Triumph!
rdjfan-189661 June 2023
The drama takes place in the 1970's and follows the journey of a group of friends. The audience will follow their triumphs, their heartbreaks and their wins/losses. I am on episode 4 of the drama and I have nothing but praise. The story, production, pacing and acting have been more than satisfactory. I'm really impressed with every aspect. Each episode is better than the last. Every character has their own charm and plays an important role. There are no weak points. I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of the series. I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed. Don't miss out on such a heartfelt, funny, and inspirational story.

Looking forward to the next episodes!

Warning: Spoilers
After watching all four episodes in one go, I was pleasantly surprised. The screenwriter's rhythm is very well grasped. Basically, the relationship between the characters of all parties and their family backgrounds are clear, and the entire logic line is also very smooth.

I really like how the screenwriter handled the emotional drama of the lead group. Chunsheng's feelings for Hongling are not simply a misrecognition, but more of a projection after the heartbeat. According to the language of the camera, he was moved first, and then he imagined Hongling as the girl he met in Shuku. Chunsheng and Guohua also have long mouths, which are quite good. As for Xiaomei, when the chance coincides, Chunsheng discovers that the moment of "could it be predestined" must also be beautiful.

The fathers are also well portrayed, and each family has its own characteristics, from which we can get a glimpse of the background of that era. It is not quite as gray as some books record, but also has colorful moments.

Looking forward to the next episodes!

A Tribute to an era
mixmix-9112 June 2023
Each character has a distinct and vivid personality. There is a particular romance that belongs to this era. I enjoy the small details in the library, which add to its charm. Additionally, there is a sense of chivalry and temperament among the boys growing up in the 70s. They possess a resolute and passionate character, always pursuing justice and fairness. They are willing to selflessly sacrifice themselves for their friends and family, safeguarding that deep bond of affection. This spirit of chivalry allows them to display fearless courage in the face of adversity, never backing down. Looking forward to the development of the story.

Excellent slice of life drama
hironodimoo1232 June 2023
Excellent worldbuilding. In one or two episodes I was transported to 1970s Beijing. The cinematography is excellent. Just excellent.

Fast but good pacing-quick and they manage to tell a story without too much extra scenes.

Well written and well acted characters. This is what makes the show amazing. With the power of great screenwriting and well written dialogue, you will immediately grasp the characters. They are fully realized, characters with motivations and different paths.

In one episode, I was in love. Especially with the main male lead. Well done! If youre here for the male lead, you def wont be disappointed (he is so handsome, his acting is so good such a well fit for the young man he portrays) . All the characters were well acted too. I know they took attention to detail. I can even hear the Beijing accent! The team did well with casting the actors and actresses. I also liked the ending song very melodic and enjoyable.

Overall, absolutely recommend. If you are a beginner to cdrama GO WATCH THIS NOW.

Deservedly one of the best period drama ever
xztwit3 June 2023
Am at episode 6 right now. So far, the story line of The Youth Memories (also known as Where Dreams Begin) is very engaging with its realistic plots and authenticity of environment. Most impressive is the acting by the whole cast. The cast blended well to portray life's uncertainties, but always with an element of hope. Special mention is the male lead, Xiao Zhan. Xiao Zhan portrayed ChunSheng as this affectionate, high-spirited, positive, bold, brave and quick-witted guy who is big brother to everyone. Xiao Zhan's realistic performance draws the audience into his fold, and you can't help but root for Xiao ChunSheng as he holds his friends and family unit together. I am looking forward to the rest of the story.

Excellent story plot!
weetengtwt3 June 2023
Have just finished watching 6 episodes in just 2 days on WETV platform. I must say the story plot is excellent, original and authentic. Story is set in the 1970s where China is just opening itself up to the outside world. It tells the story of ordinary Chinese people working hard and striving for their dreams, the value of kinship, friendship and the sincere feelings to their loved ones. In those days, people are less materialistic and this story can really touched you alot. Very good acting by the main characters as well as the supporting roles. And all the characters have well developed story of itself. I would strongly recommend this drama to my friends!

Another charming role not to be missed by actor Xiao Zhan
tanhy9 July 2023
Popular actor Xiao Zhan once again presents to us another interesting role, Xiao Chunsheng: a multi talented character with an extroverted personality. Xiao Zhan captivates the hearts of his audience with his amazing acting skills. I am amused by Xiao Chunsheng' wits and humour, and empathised with his sorrows in this drama. Do get ready some tissues for those sad and heart warming moments.

Despite many ups and downs, setbacks, injustices, and hardships that he faced, he has chosen to face it with courage and shines brightly. The drama didn't sing the praises of suffering, neither did it sell misery. Very insightful and motivational to the viewers.

On a whole, it has distinctive characters, good actors' acting skills and meticulous service. It is the best drama that is worth your time and is highly recommended.

A story in the 1970s
juumbtubnn3 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A story in the 1970s (50 years ago), the narrative technique is not bitter, and the rhythm is brisk, which is a rare good work. Moreover, the makeup of the actors is all light makeup and almost bare makeup, which is different from the heavy makeup of modern urban dramas. It is very friendly to the audience to follow the drama experience! All the characters are full and real. Not only the director and the screenwriter can tell stories, but I think the director is also very careful in casting the characters. For example, the young actor Xiao Zhan plays the young man in the Beijing compound with the old Beijing tune. It's what I want to see! No matter what age you are in, opportunities are always reserved for those who are more willing to learn new knowledge and get in touch with the new world. We can continue to see what efforts Beijing youths have made in his era.

Wonderful story, I like it
limiaoyanyi26 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The story of the old Sijiucheng revolves around Xiao Chunsheng and his partners. If you look closely at the age of the characters and the background of the time, you will find that the characters are portrayed in a realistic and three-dimensional way: Xiao Chunsheng is very representative of that era. Of a character. He longed for and admired his heroic father. Like his military father, he also has an unyielding energy in his heart, just like he will never allow the situation where he sees his brother being bullied and stands idly by - that is bullying on his head. The subtle influence of education makes him have a great sense of responsibility, and he is a person who will involuntarily divide the life of his friends into his own protection zone. This kind of self-confidence and arrogance make him one of the most dazzling people in Forty-Nine City. However, he is not reckless at all. On the contrary, Xiao Chunsheng is very good at dealing with things. While he can stick to his principles, his flexible attitude makes him always stop fighting in time and turn enemies into friends in the end. This can be regarded as One of his abilities, as to how far this ability will take him, it is still unknown.

My thoughts on Where Dreams Begins
lovelygifty-2818219 June 2023
Worth the watch, the characters were able to depict human nature that as a viewer, u felt some of the characters attitudes reminds u of someone in your life. It portrays how we human beings are without making u bored, u will actually agree with the portrayal of the behaviours of the characters. Kudos to the writer, directer, casts and crews who managed to give us this life lesson drama. It shows how as humans, we really haven't changed that much since the 70s till now. The greed, the selfishness, the desire to never give up, the betrayal, the desire to follow your dreams and realising they are worth chasing, the fact that sometimes ur childhood friends wouldn't be your friends through out your years, the dedication and honor of oneself, the understanding of why people make choices that leads them to the wrong path, the regret and realising, there is no pill for regret, the hope and above all the desire to never giving up on friends and family even when u know, they are going down the wrong path and the realisation of self love. All these attributes are packed in this drama, I didn't watch a drama, I lived it cos that's how we humans are, and the casts made an amazing job of delivering that. My best drama in 2023 so far.

giaoansoan11 July 2023
A must-watch film, every character has their unique charm. You won't want to skip a single second because every segment is captivating and enjoyable. The dialogues in the movie are also excellent. The chemistry between Xiao Chun Sheng and Xiao Yan Qiu when they were young, and the chemistry between Xiao Chun Sheng and Tong Xiao Mei when they grew up are different but equally sweet, with distinct flavors. Tieu Chien portrays these two types of chemistry exceptionally well; it's truly remarkable.

The film has an impressive achievement, deserving high ratings, popularity, and favorable reviews. Congratulations to Xiao Zhan and the film crew.

A young man's 40 year's adventure
bgxzcrn3 June 2023
Very impressive story. Mr. Xiaozhan has performed an excellent job as the leading actor in the drama.it's surprised me that he can perform a character who lived at 40 years ago who has a life journey from 19 to 50 years old. From Xiao's acting, it's hard to tell that he is the most famous young actor in his country. He supposed to be vey fashionable and modern style. However he looked very down to earth and ordinary.. You can not tell his real appearance and true characteristics traits a lot. Obviously, Mr. Xiao is very talent and hard working person, the most important, he is the global brand ambassadors for famous top brands like Gucci, Tod's and Zenith etc.

A film about the journey of adulthood and contemplation of the changing times in a man's life from his twenties to his twilight years.
tranmylinh-4288211 July 2023
Congratulations to actor Xiao Zhan for his outstanding performance, and congratulations to the film crew for reaping the deserved fruits of their efforts. "Life doesn't just stop at Thap Sat Hai, beyond it lies the vast world." Thank you, Xiao Chun Sheng, for coming and using your perseverance, loyalty, and kind heart to convince everyone. Farewell, Xiao Chun Sheng. Xiao Zhan will continue to explore different worlds, different stories, and undoubtedly achieve even greater success.

A film about the journey of adulthood and contemplation of the changing times in a man's life from his twenties to his twilight years. One might think it's just an ordinary story, but it turns out to encompass many tales of human existence and timeless moral principles.

Absolutely well made! Xiao Zhan is amazing!
This drama is not typical C-drama which is either fantasy based or love story based. It described a vivid life story of a group of young people who lived in Beijing in 70th. I was pleasantly surprised how exciting and attractive this drams was. The main character Xiao Chunsheng was illustrated by Xiao Zhan who did a wonderful job in this drama. His life story is full of twist, really hard to express in few words, both his career development and personal life development are full of inspirational. I guarantee you once you start watching, you would like to finish the whole story in no time. I'm not going to spoil the story here, w/o further due, please start watching.
