Not as out of context as it may seem

Warning: Spoilers
At first I thought this episode was a weird abrupt shift from the show trajectory. Then I started connecting the dots I didn't even know were there. For starters, yes this is the same boarding school that young Deer Lady endured. Then, lead character, Maximus, for example: was I asleep at the wheel to not realize this was young Maximus the egglant-raising survivalist from Episode 2? Or that Mabel is Elora's deceased grandmother? Or that Brownie is, in fact, our current Brownie? There are more throwbacks that background viewing may cause one to miss. So I will definitely rewatch for the back story on some of our favorite characters. And now I know why Maximus is growing eggplants.

70's Flashback!
pdefelice25 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Great episode! Time travelling back to 1976. It really captures the feel. The music, clothes, drugs, and references to AIM.

I did find an anachronism, though. In the first 3 minutes they show some youth rolling and smoking pot. It shows them using a grinder but I know for a fact that grinders weren't a thing until the 1990's.

Anther small issue is the kids are supposedly taking "window pane" but they are shown taking paper blotter. Window pane was mostly clear, kinda like a square of cellophane. Same with the acid known as "Clearlight".

The suspense at the end was well played, raising expectations of a tragic ending but instead it's quite the opposite. Tension released!

Weird shift in quality
DanyDanyShopper24 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I know the inspiration was to make like low quality film, but the writing was hard to digest, also the kids look like they have never done psychedelics in their lives to play it, the all look like nice kids pretending, badly. Not even in an old movie coming of age way. Its cool to see how many are interested to join the venture but I wish they were more prepped to keep the same high level of quality of the show. Its one episode, so I am still a fan waiting to go back to our main charterers. I love the show, wish they bring the spirit guide back, a lot of talent and over all creative collaboration of all parts creativity. It is done right overall, This one its the writing and the acting for me. The school coach was hot though.

Only really works for binge watch

Warning: Spoilers
The show starts very suddenly with an entirely different cast, at an entirely different era, without any context at all. It's made like a independent short movie, but it's not only confusing, it leaves the audience wondering why we care about these characters at all. Not until after seeing the episode summary did I realize "Young Maximus" is the same UFO obsessed old Indian who kidnaps Bear in episode 2 of this season. Why couldn't they have at least given hints? Or maybe do this as the very next episode? It took a while for me to decide this really was the 70s, instead of this "new" character, Young Matthew, just happened to have an old 70s car. I had to see a collection of other 70s cars (all new), which is also kind of silly, because at a time, there would have been older junkers, cars from the 60s! I suppose in a binge watch, the whole episode would make a lot more sense, but for a once a week watching, it was a big fail. I had to explain to my dad that "windowpane" was a name for a kind of LSD, and then they show paper tabs instead of translucent. So... alienating both people unaware of psychedelics, AND people fully aware of what "windowpane" is supposed to look like. And why no reference to ceremonial (or otherwise) peyote? There's a pattern here, don't even get me started about what aliens really look like!! (just kidding, but there was a 1976 book called "Star People" which was about aliens visiting hybrid humans here on Earth. Very on point, but again, most won't get the reference). This episode would have worked extremely well cut down to 15 minutes within another episode (perhaps episode 3? Hard to imagine taking anything out of episode 2). At least adding a few minutes of modern Maximus to give this context. I guess I should give credit to the writers for taking a big chance, but it was alienating for anyone not in the know, in multiple ways.
