“Bridgerton” Season 3 is off to a steamy hot start.
The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.
It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.
The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.
The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

“The Idea of You” was the most-streamed movie of the May 3-9 viewing window, per Luminate. The movie, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, was watched for 714.2 million minutes between May and May 9, its first full week of availability on Amazon Prime Video.
Up from its No. 5 position on last week’s chart, which was recorded after only one day of streaming for the movie, this translates to 6.2 million views when divided by its runtime. By that metric, it actually comes behind the week’s No. 2 movie, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted,” which hit 684.4 million minutes watched and 7.4 million views in its first full week on Netflix.
The Netflix documentary “Secrets of the Neanderthals” made third place with 167.9 million minutes watched (2.1 million views) in its first full week. The rest of the movies chart, populated by titles including “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” “Road House” and “Honeymoonish” all fell below...

Netflix’s Roast of Tom Brady got loads of press coverage (including several stories on this very website), but a different live special from the streamer’s Netflix Is a Joke festival racked up more views over the weekend.
Katt Williams: Woke Foke, which streamed live on Saturday, May 4, earned 4 million views (determined by total viewing time divided by running time) worldwide, according to Netflix’s internal measurement for April 29-May 5. That’s double the 2 million for the Brady roast, albeit with an extra day for users to watch as the roast streamed Sunday evening. The roast had more total viewing time at 6.2 million hours, to 4.1 million hours for Williams’ special — but it was also almost three times as long as Woke Foke.
That both specials made the global top 10, however, is testament to Netflix’s growing capacity to host live events. The streamer’s first live stand-up special,...

When faced with an overwhelmingly unexpected situation where the law and order of the state are involved, we are psychologically conditioned to do one of two things. Either confront it head-on or let it decide the course of our lives. Whichever option we choose will define us as the kind of humans we aspire to be. In Spanish filmmaker Elías León Siminiani’s The Asunta Case, another true crime thriller streaming on Netflix, a middle-aged couple is accused of murdering their adopted child. This upended their world instantly, and they had to suffer the wrath of the legal system. At the moment, they choose to fight to prove their innocence. The six-episode web series is based on a real-life incident that created a stir in Spain in 2013. It can be christened an intriguing miniseries, and the style and the pacing are engineered to heighten our curiosity. But beyond the pale of integrity and intentions,...

Paramount+ tends to lag in both Luminate and Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, but came through with a No. 4 title for the April 26-May 2.
“Knuckles,” a limited series based on the “Sonic the Hedgehog” video games, debuted on the first day of this viewing period and was watched for 450 million minutes. Divided by the series’ 171-minute runtime, that translates to roughly 2.6 million views.

The investigative thriller The Asunta Case(El Caso Asunta), starring Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa, tells the story of one of the most shocking true crimes in Spanish history. In 2001, a baby from China named Asunta Fong Yang was adopted by Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, a well-to-do couple living in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Thirteen years later, she was found dead. Her parents, who’d reported her disappearance, were later arrested for her murder. As the news rippled across the country, the question on everyone’s mind: Why?
Directed by Carlos Sedes and Jacobo Martínez, the series was created by Ramón Campos (Gran Hotel), Gema R. Neira (High Seas), Jon de la Cuesta (Estoy Vivo), and David Orea (Jaguar). Campos directed the 2017 documentary about the case, El caso Asunta: Operación Nenúfar, originally titled Lo que la Verdad Esconde: El Caso Asunta.

The limited series, which reached 2.6 million views in its debut weekend — impressive, given the show’s minimal marketing push — rose to 13.3 million views in its second week on the chart, then shot up by another 65%, landing at 22 million views for the April 22-28 viewing window.
That made it the most-watched Netflix title of the week, followed by “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” which was the top movie with 18.8 million views. “Anyone but You” was the No. 2 movie of the week with 10.6 million views in its first six days of availability, following a successful run at the box office earlier this year.

It's no news that every now and then a certain genre or subgenre becomes more popular than all the others. For a long time, the TV world followed the Westerns, but now it seems that true crime dramas are on the rise.
With the recent success of Netflix's drama Baby Reindeer, which follows Richard Gadd's real-life story of being stalked by a woman, several other true crime dramas have recently premiered on the platform.
But only one of them ended up right next to Baby Reindeer on Netflix's Global Top Chart, and that's the new investigative thriller called The Asunta Case. The miniseries unravels one of the most shocking true crimes committed in Spain.

The Asunta Case is a brand-new Netflix original miniseries that chronicles the murder of Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto in 2013 and the subsequent trial that followed for her parents, who were accused of killing their own adoptive daughter. This is yet another addition to Netflix’s true crime gallery that proves they know what they are doing when it comes to the genre. Just a few weeks ago, Netflix covered the hijacking that happened in the 1970s in Colombia through The Hijacking of Flight 601. There is no dearth of true crime stories that this streaming giant has covered. The Asunta Case was released on April 26, 2024, and it was created by Ramón Campos, Jon de la Cuesta, Gema R. Neira, and David Orea.

Netflix has a lot of hot picks this month, with the biggest being the second part of Zack Snyder’s epic space opera Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. The rebel warriors of Veldt prepare to face off against the might of the Motherworld, willing to risk it all to defend their home. Sofia Boutella returns as the titular Scargiver, Kora, and she is once again joined by Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, and Djimon Hounsou.
For those who want a little spookiness this spring, Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho’s next project, Parasyte: The Grey hits Netflix this month, as does the next entry in the Sandman universe, Dead Boy Detectives. Parasyte: The Grey follows an outbreak of an unknown alien parasite that can pass as their human hosts and infiltrate society – think Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but with more gore.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.
“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.
As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.
“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.
That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
“There is a virtuous circle that began in 2018 and has been continuously regenerating. Spain’s talent base already interests international audiences,” says María Valenzuela, Movistar Plus Intl.’s general manager.
But the country’s TV production scene is still cycling through the fruits of the boom: the number of...
