Guess, Who Is It?
imemunaahv10 November 2018
'Liberian Girl' itself is just another great Michael Jackson song (did he have any other kind?), but the video is probably one of the most star staffed music video ever produced. All people who were featured in this clip were mayor stars in the 1980s and early '90s. If you are younger generation Michael Jackson fan, then you might not know everyone, but if you are a kid whose best part of the childhood (and teenage years) were in the late '80s through early '90s, the video can offer a nice game - can you remember and name all the guest stars?

The story behind the video

Flattery Yukich Inc., one of the premier music video outfits of the 80s and 90s were asked to submit two ideas for this song. The big "gotcha" was that it had to be a concept that Michael had the option of being in or out. This idea was simple: Michael invites his celebrity friends to be in his next video - but he doesn't tell them anything more. People show up and essentially wait to be told what to do. Some assume they should sing to the track, others dance, the rest talk among themselves and wait. Finally he descends from up high on a camera crane and they realize that Michael has been secretly filming them all along. It was shot at the A&M (now Jim Henson) stage on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood over two days. Jackson's appearance was shot separately from the stars.

Catchy tune and many stars

Warning: Spoilers
This is "Liberian Girl", a 4-minute music video by Michael Jackson from over 25 years ago, actually from the year the Berlin Wall fell, and I personally find it refreshing to see and listen to a video by the artist that is not so pompous and overly long this time. Of course, in terms of what we see, it's really only a long list of (mostly African American) stars paying tribute to the King of Pop and there is not really a story in here, but it's bearable, even if a bit full of himself. The music is fun, pretty catchy song, even if a bit random and not really telling a memorable message. Anyway, this is certainly among the better works I have seen from Michael Jackson and I recommend checking it out. You will not be disappointed. On a side-note, with Jackson long gone, the director James Yukich is still making music videos today. Very long and successful career. And that's a wrap.

This video has so many virtues than you need to see it. Again and again. Time by time. For the humor, for the stars, for the storytelling, for the twist. And, maybe, for something easy to define as magic. But, more important, for discover a Michael Jackson more real, more authentic than you can imagine.
