A Wonderful Change of Viewpoint
jtphil-214 May 2015
It's clear that the writers had a lot of fun putting this episode together.

The premise is very simple: a talk show host, sort of a cross between Oprah and Ellen, brings her show to Hawaii and spends a day following the elite Five-O team as they investigate a gruesome murder.

Predictably, fans of the show hated this episode, apparently because it doesn't conform to the formula they've come to expect. That's a shame, because, although the murder is a very bloody affair, the episode is very deftly written, emphasizing the humor of the situation. Members of the team react pretty much as you would expect to the intrusion of the cameras and the cheerful host.

But behind all the humor, this is a pivotal episode, as a familiar character is discovered to have an interest in the case.

Easily the worst episode of the show.
JediCharles25 May 2013
The is episode had to be the worst of the series thus far. It could have been a good episode had it not been the faux talk show/cinéma-vérité gimmick that completely destroyed the flow of the story line and the trademark fast paced action the show is known for. As typical when this gimmick is used there are the characters that don't want to be followed by a camera, the ones who initially reject the idea then later get into it, the ones who try to impress the viewers by exaggerating their importance, and finally the ones who turn into a virtual cartoon characters as they ham it up for the camera because they can't contain their excitement of being on television. You can almost guess which cast members will assume those roles without watching even a minute of it. This show is not an overly sophisticated drama and it doesn't take itself too seriously but this particular episode takes the cheese factor just a little too far. To me, this episode 'jumped the shark' and because of that I fear the ratings could plummet and cause the show to be canceled.

Worst Episode Yet
LumpyMusic20 July 2013
As the other reviewers have already described, the fake talk show angle was just plain stupid. Even without any kind of tie-in to the Five-0 characters, the talk show host did a horrible job of portraying a talk show host. Over dramatic. Over patronizing of the "live studio audience". Bad half attempt to do a "COPS" like follow along. Bad half attempt to do an Oprah or whoever she was doing.

The usual character interaction seemed to have diminished for the sake of the talk show. Steve and Dano banter. Max's goofy savant-like quirks. Kono and Chin Ho sleuthing out the tech crime fighting stuff. All gone. Or at least took a back seat to that stupid talk show.

Following the actual plot of the crime was difficult because of the distracting talk show angle. Seems like the underlying premise of the plot, murder, who-done-it etc., could have been great. But including the silly show within a show just made it the worst episode of Five-0 I've seen of this series.

Seems like the producers and writers are grasping at something to juice up what is perhaps the end of the run of the series.

This is the first episode we skipped!
dutchy_on_a_bike31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After 2 minutes, we skipped this episode, it seemed like a filler episode. It wasn't until a few episodes later, when Wo Phat was captured, we knew we had missed something. Why put such an important plot line into this episode?

Worst episode of the series
TeOfLeDiKi4 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This was by far the worst episode of the series. The show is typically kind of fun, with lots of implausible action sequences, and quick banter between the two leads (Alex O'Laughlin and Scott Caan). The remaining characters sort of fade in and out, and I often wonder what the point of having them there is (other than the obvious eye-candy factor for Kim, Park, and Borth, and the quirky fun-ness of Oka, and the supporting characters, like Fong, who are interesting but never get enough screen time).

Some of my review is a personal reaction to Aisha Tyler as the talk-show host. I really don't much like the actress, but the character of Savannah Williams was just - oh, how do I say it? - irritating, dumb, pointless. There were no revelations about the central cast made thru the venue of the fake show, and I agree with another reviewer that the capture of Wo Fat certainly ranks among the biggest story lines of the entire series. In fact, it ranks right up there with the biggest stories of BOTH incarnations of the show.

But this big storyline was wasted on an absolute throwaway of an episode. Was the whole point just to get a very attractive guest star to prance about in a brightly-colored sundress for 43 minutes? Probably.

I wish I could be more eloquent, but, basically, I sum up my review with one word. Yuk.

Worst so far!
martijnboer798 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
All in all a bad episode. I agree with the other reviews. They finally catch Wo Fat, and show it by means of a talk-show? Are you kidding me?

To be honest, the show is getting worse. Season one started out great. Especially the dialog between Scott and Alex. Second season also was pretty good. But the third season has got a lot of bad episodes. Almost as if the writers don't care what happens to the show. Please fix this! I really love the show, but it has to change.

Scott and Alex still make me laugh. I bet they have a lot of fun on set.

@edwagreen: The big character is NOT played by Dacascos, but by Taylor Wily. Dacascos plays Wo Fat. Please get your facts straight.

Desperately bad
daniv116 November 2013
Sometimes I wonder if the writers/producer/director actually watch the episodes they put out, surely they would have realized and promptly canned this disaster of an episode. What were they trying to achieve by making a reasonably polished show look like some cheap daytime TV show aimed for soccer moms ?

This approach simply makes no sense for this style of show, the roles were so painfully cliché it was hard to watch. Okay so the 5-0 members don't like being filmed, do we need that theme shoved in our face the ENTIRE episode ? Finally they catch Wo Fet but we get a horrible disjointed and ironically unrealistic experience.

The Savannah character was embarrassing to watch, with acting on par with a high school drama student. The team involved with Hawaii 5-0 really dropped the ball here quite badly.

Worst episode in Five-0 history
aaronfox-759-17166910 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
From the start, with this talk show angle, I knew this was going to be a cheesy gimmick, but really I had no idea how bad it would be. I actually like Aisha Tyler, primarily for her work in Archer, but her character in this show was annoying as hell.

Also, as others have mentioned, the frosty reception of the characters to the talk show host was terribly cliché, something I would expect from a lower quality show.

And as others have said, I'm astonished that they ruined the momentous event of capturing Wo Fat by showing it through the lens of this talk show. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I really don't understand what's going on in this show. This is now two episodes in a row of pure crap. Get back to the character-driven action formula that works for this show.

Portraying Five-0 as Realistic Ruined this Episode
gerd8618 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was boring to watch and made me feel awkward and annoyed. I love this show, but this episode completely ruined it. The whole idea of following someone around at work makes it seem like they are trying to say Five-0 is a realistic thing. It is not. I don't like the show for its reality, because it has none; the whole idea of a task force with full immunity and means while fighting crime is nonsense. I like the show for the interaction between Steve and Danny, and for the energy and speed of the show. Many things that happen on the show are complete and utter nonsense. For example, they had a reality show follow a police force around in combat circumstances. That would never happen.

In short, trying to portray Five-0 as a realistic thing only points out the bad side of the show, whilst making it impossible to show its positive traits. It ruins the show.

I am very disappointed that such an important event as catching Wo Fat was portrayed in this episode, because having to watch the story through the camera of some annoying talk show host means the viewers are unable to see any emotion within Five-0. It keeps from being drawn into the story. In fact, I did not really follow the story, because I was distracted from it by the annoying talk show thing.

Awful, awful episode
matthewdavidmackie28 July 2015
Easily the worst episode of the series I've seen. The entire idea had me cringing from the start. Now I'm sure you've read the other reviews before mine so I'll just give my two cents of my thoughts. First of all, could they have picked a more annoying "TV show host? Five- 0 didn't even want you they in the first place so here's an idea, mind your own business and just film what's going on! But no, she insists on trying to get interviews and get "insider knowledge" of what's going on. You're a civilian. You're not a law enforcement officer. They have every right to not speak to you on what's going on and actually they shouldn't be near the crime scene in general. Sorry, this is more of a rant rather than actual review.

If you don't watch this episode it's probably for the best. Terrible idea, awfully executed and I hope the producers never bring something like this to the show ever again.

Absolutely sucked
mustafa_ahmedani21 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Just terrible. I wasn't really expecting this to be all that bad, but it really was worse than I thought. I'll start off by answering a question that I asked myself at the beginning of the episode, and I'm sure you did too - no, the presenter of the talk show does not go away, she stays for the duration of the episode. Additionally, the cameras of the talk show are the ones filming, not the regular cameras, so pretty much everything is censored which really ruined the show for me. I really get into this show, and the talk show element of the show really ticked me off. The character of the presenter also annoyed me, as well as the camera movement, which I presume was made to look like a talk show. It definitely offered an interesting perspective, hence the 3 stars instead of 1, and it still offered the action, however not much investigation at Five-0 HQ, and the plan doesn't really unfold as it does with other episodes, it just sort of happens. For example, usually it starts off with the incident, then a preview of the team living their everyday lives, followed by them getting called in. They then get on the crime scene, and start investigating. With this episode, the investigation, the team living their everyday lives, and the incident at the beginning is replaced with clips from the talk show. Overall, just terrible. I'd still watch it if you were like me and wanted to watch every single episode, but definitely skip if you don't watch this religiously. Absolutely no build up, annoying theme to it - terrible.

Awful and upsetting
tcsampson18 June 2018
This was the worst episode by far. The tv show host was a bad idea for a major part of the storyline. It was painful and wasn't attention grabbing. It was more annoying than anything. It leaves out important pieces to where I am still asking questions. I think the tv host idea would have been better on a different less important episode.

Thought it was Reno 911
bartintimor2 July 2018
Just watched it now.........Terrible.

Thought it felt like cringeworthy comedy ( such as Reno 911).

I felt sorry for the extras playing the "talk show" studio audience too. Hate to think they were holidaymakers staying at the Hilton-yeah we'll be on Hawaii 5-0 as extras!....then they see the episode they are in "oops".

Worse than the episodes with McGarrets mother in them.

This episode is cruel and unusual punishment
susiq-3189 May 2018
This truly horrific episode does one thing right, it showcases what really bad acting is. The person playing Karen Walker should be banned from screens large and small, in fact ban her from any and all stages! I kept watching to see if it would get better before the end, but instead I spent the episode praying for bullet to kill Karen Walker and save humanity from this inhuman torture.

Could do without talk show host
richterkaren4 March 2022
I love Hawaii 5 0 but this episode but less to be desired. I think what ruined it for me was having the talk show host following them around and that took away some of the excitement from the episode, too much interruption.

*** Five O, Not Quite Hollywood
edwagreen30 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A female television star goes to work with 5-O to see what it's like. She has quite a revelation as the group again goes after Wo Fat.

The episode is highly predictable with Masa Oki, as Dr. Max Bergman, stating how much he adores her newscasts and even takes his glasses off for her. Damascos, who plays the heavy-set character, even tries to get into the act by offering a sales reduction of up to 50% off on what he is selling.

The real star is Steve, as well as Danno. They are as cold as can be to the celebrity, while telling her constantly to move back with the cameras when the situation appears dangerous. They see this as a publicity stunt by the governor.

Steve Acting As Holier than Though
shelbythuylinh25 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sure blame the talk show hostess played by former "Talk" and "Criminal Minds" actress-comedienne Aisha Tyler there.

But really Steve acting like a glory hog and really rubbing it in there. Shows that it is how he became such a total jerk but don't blame all of AOL there. Peter Lenkov is the reason he put his own arrogance as the show's EP and creator on Steve.

Their case with Savannah Walker following them there, links to Wo Fat and the mafia there unintentional there.
