“Breathe” sets out to offer a very specific kind of emotional experience and never wavers from that goal. The swooning period piece from director Andy Serkis tracks the decades of survival by Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield), a man stricken with polio in the ’50s who survived on a breathing machine for some 40 years, and the devotion of his wife Diana (Claire Foy) who stuck by his side that entire time. It’s a gorgeous, romantic drama that earns its emotional resonance without venturing beyond the most familiar beats.
The movie may not register as the most obvious choice of a debut for Serkis, best known as Hollywood’s preeminent motion-capture performer, whose credits range from Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” to Caesar in the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, but its elegant, old-fashioned appeal shrouds the sophisticated performance at its center. Moshe Kasher doesn’t get to play characters on “Problematic,” his new talk show about all things online and debatable. But in a recent visit to TheWrap Studios, he committed hard to a not-at-all-problematic character named Racist Stephen Hawking. It was all for the greater good of explaining the potential flaws in President Trump’s proposed wall with Mexico. Many Kasher fans have met the character before, notably on Pete Holmes’ “You Made It Weird” podcast. But you don’t need any prior Kasher knowledge to thoroughly enjoy — or feel weird about thoroughly enjoying — his Racist Stephen Hawking character. All you need...

When The Big Bang Theory wraps up and is replaced by the next big hit sitcom, I wonder how it will be remembered. Unlike Friends, which seemed to hold onto audience goodwill long after its peak, there's a sense that many of the people who still watch this show do so out of habit. There are some episodes, like the previous two in this season, that make me wish that wasn't the case, but then there are episodes like The Geology Elevation.
This is a weak outing in pretty much every way – a greatest hits of the things the show has come to lean on when it's out of ideas. You have Sheldon regressing into his petulant baby mode, Howard being offensive for no reason, and...

Gleason follows the life of ex-nfl football player Steve Gleason and his battle with Als through video journals and, later, camera footage. Gleason is the star here as his honesty is what draws one in. He has been described as a warrior poet and that description definitely applies. His travels with his wife are sure to pull at the emotional strings, but the film also feels honest in its intent and drive. That is largely due to Gleason and the people around him, but also to director Clay Tweel. It was a great pleasure to talk with Tweel as I asked him about the practicalities of financing a film like this, how involved Gleason and his wife were, and what his goal was in the making of this documentary. Many people have cried (this writer included) watching The Theory of Everything, the drama that won Eddie Redmayne an Oscar for playing Stephen Hawking. However, few were as likely to have been moved as Michel Gleason, wife to New Orleans Saints NFL player Steve Gleason. The former athlete was diagnosed with the muscle-debilitating disease Als (also known as motor neurone disease), the same disease Hawking has, in 2011 at the age of 34. Michel has been by his side ever since.
“I went to a 10 o’clock showing with my parents,” Michel recalls. “I have never cried so hard at anything. My mom kept saying, ‘We don’t have to stay – we can go.’ I’m like, ‘Mom, I’m fine – I just need to cry it out.

In a pivotal scene early in Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl, the 1920s Copenhagen painter Einar Wegener, as played by Eddie Redmayne, sits in for a portrait his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) is painting of a ballerina. Breathlessly caressing the stockings and slippers, something stirs in Einar.
It's a moment that cues a coming transformation: Einar will gradually become a woman, finally undergoing one of the earliest known sex reassignment surgeries. Einar becomes Lili Elbe, a celebrated trans pioneer.
"I didn't want it to be an epiphany," says Redmayne of the scene. "It felt like she had been born, and society and herself had encased herself in this masculine exoskeleton. The important thing for me was the film should see that unraveling."
Redmayne, the best-actor Oscar winner earlier this year for his Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, has proven to be an immaculately technical actor and an expert of metamorphosis.

Danish Modern: Hooper’s Painterly Costume Drama Mounted on a Glossy Stage
Much as last year’s The Imitation Game served to honor the memory and legacy of Alan Turing, a man whose reputation was tarnished by the homophobic stigma of the times in which he lived, Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl is a glossy delivery of 1920’s Danish painter Lili Elbe, one of the first people to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Both these films hold a certain degree of importance and cultural relevancy due to the validating platforms and pedigree of the filmmakers behind them, both in their ability to reach mass audiences and garner significant accolades, but also in how these films acknowledge openly the dire struggles of their subjects to flourish in a world rigidly set against their sexuality.

"Window on the Universe" smashes together narration from Nasa engineers, astronauts, and Dr. Stephen Hawking to create an auto-tuned song about the Hubble Space Telescope. These messages are combined with footage from the telescope, include some delectable shots of the Hubble Deep Field.

Stephen Hawking has lent his voice (literally) to a new version of Monty Python's "Galaxy Song" – a charming ditty designed to make your problems feel small and you smaller – which was featured in the comedy troupe's 1983 movie The Meaning of Life. The group recently performed the tune at their reunion concerts last year in London, after which it cut to a scene of physicist Brian Cox detailing the song's inaccuracies until Hawking runs him down with his wheelchair and says, "I think you're being pedantic," before "singing" it and flying into the heavens.

To celebrate Record Store Day, international treasure Stephen Hawking recorded a cover of Monty Python's universe explainer "Galaxy Song" from the troupe's 1983 film The Meaning of Life. After all, who better to sing the lines, "Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space / 'Cause there's bother all down here on Earth," than one of the greatest minds of our time? Zoom on, Hawking.

Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Hawking with wit and warmth, Lars von Trier adds to Charlotte Gainsbourg’s suffering and Us teen movies get the documentary treatment
It seems there are certain roles that would win any actor an Oscar, though that’s not entirely true: consider the formidable names who have played Nelson Mandela, for example, and somehow missed the gold. Yet it’s fair to say that Eddie Redmayne could probably have been a lot less convincing as theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking than he is in The Theory of Everything (Universal, 12), and still have walked off with most of the prizes. If there’s one thing that impresses award voters more than the effort that goes into mimicking a disability, it’s the effort that goes into mimicking a very, very famous person.
Cynicism, however, should not get in the way of admiration, and Redmayne really does make a remarkable Hawking.

Before last year, Eddie Redmayne's best known roles were supporting parts in Les Miserables and My Week With Marilyn. Now, the British actor has a BAFTA Award, a SAG award, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar to his name.
News: Eddie Redmayne Channels Transgender Pioneer Lili Elbe for New Film
Redmayne, who won over audiences, critics, and voters with the impressive physicality of his portrayal of Als-afflicted physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, is now preparing for another transformative role. The actor is reuniting with Les Miserables director Tom Hooper to play transgender woman Lili Elbe, one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery, in the biographical adaptation The Danish Girl.
"I was actually offered The Danish Girl before Hawking," Redmayne told British GQ for his Spring/Summer 2015 cover story. "People go, 'Oh are you doing this transformative thing?' It's not a concerted choice. I think it will be a unique experience...

Following his Oscar-winning turn as Stephen Hawking, Eddie Redmayne is bringing another real-life person’s story to the big screen.
In The Danish Girl, Redmayne will play Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer and one of the first people to undergo sexual reassignment surgery.

Hitting theaters in 2016, the film is based on an award-winning book of the same name, which tells a fictionalized version of Elbe’s story. This is Redmayne’s first major role to follow The Theory of Everything (and will hopefully erase any memory of Jupiter Ascending).

The film, which has languished in production for years, was originally supposed to star a female actress -- Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard were among the names previously attached.

Grimy, sweaty, passionate, alive – James Marsh’s exploration of the complex romance between future physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), the college girlfriend who would become his wife and supporter, flies in the face of expectation. Avoiding tropes of the biopic genre, The Theory of Everything is raw, emotional and at times so intimate in its portrayal of the Hawkings’ most unusual marriage, and of Stephen’s battle against motor neurone disease, that you feel as though you’re intruding.
It will be jarring for viewers to see Hawking, now famed as a wheelchair-bound, robot-voiced intellectual, racing around the Oxford campus on his bike, hair whipped back by the wind and a broad grin stretching across his face. It may also come as a shock to watch his courtship of the pretty, quiet Wilde blossom into all-consuming infatuation – to see them together is to watch two sweet and inelegant souls,...

After winning the Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday, Eddie Redmayne had another reason to smile when renowned physicist Stephen Hawking congratulated him on winning for his portrayal of him in The Theory of Everything.
"Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an #Oscar for playing me in The Theory of Everything movie," the 73-year-old professor wrote on his Facebook page. "Well done Eddie, I'm very proud of you."

Prior to the big event, the film's scriptwriter, Anthony McCarten, announced that Hawking -- who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), also known as motor neurone disease -- would not be able to attend the 87th Annual Academy Awards as he was not well enough to fly to Los Angeles.

Eddie Redmayne wasn't the only one excited when he took home the Best Actor Oscar at last night's Academy Awards ceremony: Stephen Hawking, the man Redmayne portrayed in "The Theory of Everything," was thrilled, too.
In a Facebook post, Hawking praised Redmayne's win, offering his congratulations to the actor, and adding, "I'm very proud of you."
Post by Stephen Hawking.
Hawking had been a vocal supporter of the film, and Redmayne's performance in particular, before, but his praise is no doubt especially appreciated by the newly-minted Oscar winner. In his acceptance speech, Redmayne thanked Hawking, his first wife Jane, and their children for letting him tell their story, and dedicated the statuette to them and to everyone around the globe battling Als (the disease with which Hawking has been living since the 1960s).
"The Theory of Everything" was nominated for four other Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress.

There may have been few surprises among the winners at Sunday night's Academy Awards, but one surprise was how political their speeches were. After all, in recent years, political statements have largely been unwelcome guests at the Dolby Theater.
In past years, artists from Vanessa Redgrave to Richard Gere to Michael Moore have been criticized for using their time at the Oscar podium to raise controversial issues before a worldwide audience. In an evening of glitz, glamour, and self-congratulation, mentioning the sometimes cruel realities of life beyond Hollywood Boulevard makes winners seem like party poopers. Mentioning God, your cast and crew, your spouse and kids, and Harvey Weinstein is fine, but mentioning the plight of migrant farm workers is a little too much reality for the dream factory.
Nonetheless, several winners at the 87th annual Oscar ceremony used their victory speeches to mention causes important to them. Some of those...

Who knew that Stephen Hawking is a ladies' man? The Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones told Ryan Seacrest on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday that the physicist was a little flirty when they met. "He has a very flirtatious nature," said Jones, 31, of Hawking, 73, whose story is told in The Theory of Everything. "He's very, very charismatic; he has this ability to just command a room effortlessly." It's no wonder that Hawking was flirtatious - Jones earned a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of his first wife, Jane Wilde. And on the ability to command a room,...

Regardless of how you feel about the 2014 competitors in this year.s Academy Awards ceremony, there.s no denying that the past year gave us a lot of great performances from many talented actors. However, it.s The Theory of Everything.s Eddie Redmayne that will likely come out on top in the Best Actor category. Redmayne has already won numerous awards for his portrayal of the famous physicist, including a Golden Globe and the BAFTA. But the Academy Awards are arguably the most prestigious of the Hollywood film awards. While there were many great performances during 2014, Redmayne.s not only trumps his fellow nominees, but his role as Dr. Stephen Hawking was one of the best performances Hollywood has had in recent years. First off, physically, Redmayne is a near-carbon copy of Hawking. Yes, appearance has little to do with acting ability, but looking the part doesn.t hurt.

Eddie Redmayne has thanked the families who inspired his BAFTA Award-winning film The Theory of Everything.
The Stephen Hawking biopic took home three trophies in all at Sunday's BAFTA ceremony (February 8), including Outstanding British Film and Best Actor for Redmayne.
Speaking to Digital Spy and other reporters after his win, Redmayne extended his gratitude to Hawking and his family for their co-operation on The Theory of Everything.
"It's a scary thing having your life put out in the world on film," he said. "I'm one of those people who, when they see a film, I believe it to be absolutely true."
Redmayne continued: "So, trusting people to take your life knowing that things are going to shift and change in the process shouldn't be taken lightly - but they have been so kind."
Professor Hawking was in attendance for the 68th British Academy Film Awards to see Redmayne triumph in the Best Actor category.
