After a long time in development and a change of writer and director, Labyrinth 2 is finally heading into production. It’ll be helmed by Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, working from a new script by Maggie Levin.
The first plot details we’ve heard indicate that the story will follow the same basic outline as Labyrinth: a young child makes a wish, realizes the horrible consequences and must traverse a fantasy maze to save the day. Early indications are that original star Jennifer Connelly will be playing the mother of our new heroine and that David Bowie’s Goblin King Jareth will be replaced by a Goblin Queen. Given that Bowie’s ethereal and sexy performance as Jareth is a major reason why the original is so well remembered, his absence will be keenly felt.

1986’s Labyrinth flopped on its original release and made back just half its budget. It also received very mixed reviews from critics, with Gene Siskel calling it “awful” with a “pathetic story” and Roger Ebert saying it “never really comes alive.” But ever since its premiere, the film has gradually increased in stature, becoming a hit on home video and later, DVD. Now, it’s a bona fide cult classic and Labyrinth 2 is on its way.
This has been in the works since at least 2016, when Nicole Perlman announced she was writing the script, with Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez attached to helm. That take on the project eventually fell through, but we heard last month that Doctor Strange‘s Scott Derrickson would be directing with a script by Maggie Levin.

Earlier this week, we got the surprise announcement that a belated sequel to classic 1980s fantasy movie Labyrinth is on the way. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson is on hand to helm the follow-up, with the script coming from Maggie Levin. We don’t know any casting details just yet, but everyone’s already preoccupied by who could play the next Goblin King. David Bowie’s performance as the baby-stealing Jareth is one of, if not the, most popular things about the original and folks are very picky about who should replace him.
One star has risen to the top of the pile, though, and it’s Tilda Swinton. Just like Bowie, Swinton’s known for her otherworldly, androgynous energy, so you can see why folks want her to step into the late legend’s shoes, assuming anyone has to, of course. A quick search on social media will bring...

The 1986 original starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly and has maintained a cult status for over three decades, leading to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, perennial screenings and even an annual fan masquerade ball, which is considered one the largest in the world.
Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company is producing. Brian Henson is executive producing. Derrickson is executive producing with his frequent collaborator, C. Robert Cargill. Blanca Lisa, vice president of feature film production, is shepherding the project for The Jim Henson Company.

With The Girl in the Spider’s Web and a new Labyrinth film in the works, Fede Alvarez is one busy dude at the moment. But don’t worry. He’s not leaving horror behind. It was announced back in November that a sequel to Don’t Breathe was on the menu, which was not surprising to hear given the film raked […]...

Claire Foy may be the next Lisbeth Salander. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress, who plays Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s “The Crown,” is being courted by Sony to star in the film adaptation of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” David Lagercrantz’s 2015 novel, the fourth in the Millennium series originally started by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson. “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez is on board to helm the project.
Sources tell THR that after searching for the right actress to play the hacker, the studio narrowed the list down to two finalists, Foy and Felicity Jones. An offer has been made to Foy, but there has been some scheduling conflicts.
