There’s no doubting that Keegan-Michael Key is a funny guy, as he’s proven on the Emmy-winning Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele and with scene-stealing roles in everything from Pitch Perfect 2 to the first season of Fargo on FX.
But after Key & Peele came to an end in 2015, Key says he purposefully sought out work that would take him as far away from the sketch comedy world, which, also thanks to his years on MadTV, had defined much of his career up until that point. “I felt like we had done almost as much as we could do with the form,” he tells Et, and he was ready to set his career on a new course with roles that tapped into his classical training.
The first sign of that transition came in 2016 with Don’t Think Twice, a dramedy about standup comedians, and then a leading role as Ethan on Netflix’s Friends From College. But it was...

Marvel has announced that they are launching a new scripted murder mystery podcast called Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine will be played by The Hobbit’s Richard Armitage. The series is being scripted by podcast writer Ben Percy and it's described as a blend of programs such as Serial, S-Town, True Detective, and Unforgiven. Percy explains:
“If you look at the success of Serial and S-Town, it has everything to do I think with their investigative formats, the way the listeners become complicit in the narrative. They’re co-authors, they’re literary detectives, because they’re piecing together the clues alongside the reporters, and I wanted to take a similar approach to that.”
As far as the story goes, it will follow two agents, "Sally Pierce (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Tad Marshall (Ato Essandoh), who arrive in the fictional town of Burns, Alaska, to investigate a series of murders. The...

Ben Stiller has dabbled in the indie film world only twice this decade (three times if you count his small role as himself in Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice”), but both times have resulted in some of the best work of his career: Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” and “While We’re Young.” He’s reuniting with Baumbach for a third time in the well-reviewed Cannes family drama “The Meyerowitz Stories,” which is one of two high profile speciality releases that guarantee fall 2017 is the season Stiller officially becomes an indie movie star.

Stiller’s other indie project is “Brad’s Status,” from writer-director Mike White. The comedian plays a suburban husband and father whose comfortable life is thrown into disarray when a trip to Boston to look at colleges with his son triggers a crisis of confidence.

Looking at the new list of members for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, there are a lot of big-name actors. Movie stars like Channing Tatum (“Foxcatcher”) join recent nominees Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) and Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”).
But there are arguably even bigger names: Riz Ahmed. Donald Glover. Keegan-Michael Key. Rami Malek. Kate McKinnon. Sarah Paulson.
On the Academy’s official announcement, each actor’s name is followed by the films cited for their inclusion. For Ahmed, it’s “Nightcrawler;” Glover, “The Martian;” Key, “Don’t Think Twice;” Malek,”Short Term 12;” McKinnon, “Office Christmas Party,” and Paulson, “12 Years a Slave.” Almost all of these are excellent films (“Office Christmas Party,” looking at you), but do you associate these people with those projects?

Chicago – The dry, hangdog demeanor of comedian Demetri Martin is familiar to fans who have watched his Comedy Central show, “Important Things,” experienced his notable stand up routines and read his best-selling books. It seemed a natural to leap into film, so Martin has written, directed and portrays the title character in the new release, “Dean.”
Dean (Demetri Martin) is in a life funk, due to the death of his mother the year before, and the break-up of his engagement shortly thereafter. He plunges into his work as a cartoonist and illustrator, but he can’t shake the recent losses. His father Robert (Kevin Kline) is trying to reach out, but can’t seem to get through to him, until he tells Dean that he is selling the family home. This puts the title character into a tailspin, and even an escape to Los Angeles – and meeting a free spirit...

Us comedian and filmmaker Mike Birbiglia may not be a comedic household name here in the UK as yet, but he’s been slowly building up a strong reputation State-side, particularly with his stand-up specials and one-man shows. His breakthrough in the latter, Sleepwalk with Me, formed the basis for his directorial debut of the same name, which went on to win an award at 2012’s Sundance Film Festival.
He’s also parlayed his talents on stage into a burgeoning acting career, cropped up recently as a supporting player in high-profile works like Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck and the Ya adaptation The Fault in Our Stars. His small screen roles has seen him appear in popular fare such as Girls and Orange Is the New Black.

Every once in a while, a really special film comes along that you may have a chance to see at a film festival, but that may not have the biggest studio push behind it when it finally gets released. Jeff Grace’s Folk Hero and Funny Guy is one of those great festival movies that really deserves more attention.
The film stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), and Alex Karpovsky (Girls) as two childhood friends whose lives went into very different directions in terms of fame and success. Russell’s Jason Black is a hugely-popular singer and songwriter i.e. the folk her of the title, while Karpovsky’s Paul is the funny guy, a struggling stand-up comic for many years. When Paul’s fiancé dumps him, Jason, feeling bad for his friend, throws out the idea of the two of them going on tour with Paul opening for him. The...

Blow Out (Brian De Palma)

In his ode to the conceit of Blow Up — Michelangelo Antonioni’s deeply influential English-language debut, released 15 years prior — as well as the aural intrigue of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, De Palma constructs a conspiracy...

Chris Gethard has achieved the kind of ubiquity that’s rare in the American comedy landscape. For years, he’s mined the humor in supporting roles in everything from Parks And Recreation to Broad City, as well as turning in affecting performances in films like Don’t Think Twice. And it’s all delivered with the offbeat appeal of a guy who’s been quietly building a loyal and devoted fan base of fellow outsiders, in large part through his cult series The Chris Gethard Show. And now, in honor of his new HBO comedy special Career Suicide, The A.V. Club is giving those same fans a chance to hit up the awkwardly endearing comedian with whatever question they’d like.
It’s a very simple process: You can email AVCGethard@gmail.com and ask away, or you can go into the comments below and pose the question there...

“Hate to say it…but sometimes people just break. Welcome to a comedy show.”
Chris Gethard is baring all his inner demons (and sad uncle physique) onstage in his one-man off-Broadway show “Career Suicide,” which will be broadcast this May on HBO. Despite the heavy material that Gethard delves into, the comedian, talk show, and podcast host is sure to bring on the laughs, as shown in the trailer below.
Gethard, who audiences may recognize from the critically acclaimed “Don’t Think Twice,” explores his bout with depression, the stigma of seeking therapy in northern New Jersey, and finding out that most 11 year old kids do not, in fact, have “an internal monologue that sounds just like Travis Bickle from ‘Taxi Driver.'”

Soft-spoken and charming, Birbiglia owns his niche as a comedian-storyteller.
Fresh off the release of his second (and first non-autobiographical) film, Don’t Think Twice, Mike Birbiglia brings a new stand-up special to the usurping regent of filmed comedy hours, Netflix. Like Birbiglia’s other stand-up, especially the special My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Thank God For Jokes softly allows the comedian to barge non-threateningly into his audience’s hearts like an old roommate that you’d never thought you’d see again.
Birbiglia’s self-awareness of his own niche appeal, a sleepy introspectively intellectual goofball, is a hallmark of indie success. You have to know yourself before you know your market, but you have to know both to move forward. Birbiglia, a self-described niche comedian and independent filmmaker, has these two ends of an industry-wide production chain wrapped up. As half the duo who created the now-defunct comedy series “Key & Peele,” Keegan-Michael Key knows a lot about being funny. Perhaps just as notably, neither he nor longtime collaborator Jordan Peele will let themselves be defined by it.
While the pair co-wrote and starred in last year’s missing-cat romp “Keanu,” their more recent work shows considerable effort to work outside the confines of comedy. Peele recently made his directorial debut with the wildly successful racially themed horror film “Get Out,” and Key has cast a wide net with his acting gigs. Last year, he had a major role in Mike Birbiglia’s ensemble piece about an improv troupe, “Don’t Think Twice,” and he’s currently shooting Shane Black’s big-budget reboot “The Predator.” This month, he’ll surface in “Win It All,” Joe Swanberg’s latest effort, which is produced by Netflix and will premiere at the SXSW...

“Table 19” arranges a bountiful display of talent. It took a while, but Kumail Nanjiani has worked his way into popular culture with a combination of sincerity and snarky charm. Even as he made his name in standup comedy and memorable television roles (most recently on “Silicon Valley”), he found acclaim for his one-man shows, which dig through his struggles as a Pakistani-American at odds with his traditional upbringing.
Now comes “The Big Sick,” which funnels the two sides of his career into a genuine crowdpleaser that juggles humor and pathos through a personal lens. Co-written with wife Emily V. Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan, who acts opposite Nanjiani as himself), the movie turns their bumpy courtship into a portrait of resilience that operates on both charm and depth.
“The Big Sick” is directed by Michael Showalter, whose “Hello, My Name is Doris” was a genial tale of midlife vigor that now plays like a calling card for this bigger canvas.

Mother and child horror films aren’t hard to find, especially these days. The Babadook might be the best of the bunch in recent years, but there’s still Goodnight Mommy, Lyle, the Carrie remake, Prevenge and now, Don’t Knock Twice, starring Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff, which will bring witches and evil spirits into the equation.
The premise is simple enough: a guilt-ridden mother (Sackhoff) tries to save her estranged daughter (Lucy Boynton) from an apparent curse from a vengeful witch, which terrorizes and haunts them, in the vein of Candyman or The Ring. But with its unsettling imagery, disturbing visuals and jarring editing, Don’t Knock Twice — not to be confused with Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice from last summer, which is a completely different movie— certainly looks promising. We hope to say the same when it enters theaters, whenever that might be in the United States.

Superhero movies/TV shows always focus on the ones with the powers, but what about those other, lowly people? The ones trying to get through their nine-to-five shift without their building collapsing onto them? That’s the basis, in part, for NBC’s DC Comics comedy Powerless, a workplace sitcom with an added superpowered twist, which is set to premiere early next month. To announce its not-so-supersized debut, the peacock station released the show’s first official trailer this week, and you can check it out up above.
Starring Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Danny Pudi (Community), Christina Kirk (A to Z), Ron Funches (Undatable), Kate Miccuci (Don’t Think Twice) and Josh Fadem (30 Rock), Powerless follows the employees of Wayne Security, a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises, that specializes in products for the defenseless, Aka the powerless, to make them feel safer.

Chicago – It’s that time of the film year, the “Ten Best” lists. In representing my 2016 picks – as “Patrick McDonald” – I looked for the emotional experience as much as anything. I think every filmgoer, from the most casual to the ardent buff, adhere to their favorites through that feeling of connection.
There are honorable mentions all over the place, often just missing the 10th spot – I like to characterize them as all tied for eleventh. My favorite superhero film was “Captain America: Civil War,” for the Marvel Comics angst that works best in this genre of movies. The dramas “Arrival,” “Elle,” “Little Men” and “A Monster Calls” were excellent and heartfelt experiences. I loved the wacky tribute that writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen gave to 1950s Hollywood in “Hail, Caesar!” And after watching it again after initial reservations, I realized and connected to the ardent celebration in the musical “La La Land.

It’s time to put a bow on 2016, ladies and gentlemen! New Year’s Eve is tomorrow, but before that party, today will be a festivity of sorts. Yes, it’s time to reveal my picks for the year’s best films and performances. From early year releases that held on all the way to a few late breaking players, my lists have a whole range of titles. The year has been a volatile one, both in terms of world events and also when it comes to cinema. 2016 was the year where things kind of got nuts politically and with celebrity deaths, but it was also the year wearisome incredible movies came out. Plenty of people will focus on the former, so I’ll concentrate on the latter today. Let’s get started! Below you will see both my picks for the very best movies of 2016 as well as the...

From the frequency and diversity of celebrity deaths to major international political stories like Brexit and the election of Donald Trump, the year 2016 has felt despairing at best and like a barrage of horror at worst. Now, as the year draws to a close, the guys at Friend Dog Studios have made a parody trailer to “2016: The Movie,” a horror film about this past year. Watch the trailer below.

Every year, IndieWire looks beyond the countless top 10 lists written by critics to widen the field. We turn to friends and colleagues in the independent film community — programmers, distributors, publicists and others — to give them the opportunity to share their favorite films and other media from the past 12 months. We also invited them to share their resolutions and anticipated events for 2017.

I’m limiting my list to films that had Us and Canadian theatrical releases in 2016. I saw far more than 10 this year that I liked, but if I have to be brutal, I’ll limit it to the films that lifted me.
1. “Moonlight”

4. “Cemetery of Splendor”
5. “Arrival”

As the year comes to a close, there is one group we’ve yet to hear from about the Best of 2016: The Directors.
Filmmakers are busy folks, and some were instantly wary about making a list, with “I haven’t seen enough movies to make a top ten list” a common reply. So we decided to keep it loose. Including TV and other forms of entertainment was encouraged, how they chose to frame their list was totally flexible, and even if they only had a handful of projects they wanted to highlight, IndieWire made it clear we wanted to know what inspired them this year.
The most exciting thing, beyond how many great directors replied, is the time and energy they put into their lists. Be it Kirsten Johnson’s tribute to Abbas Kiarostami, Paul Feig’s surprise message to “Ghostbuster” trolls, Jennifer Kent teasing the start of her new film,...

Lionsgate’s La La Land scored the best per theater average of the year this weekend, grossing a sizzling $855K in five theaters, giving Damien Chazelle’s musical a very robust $171K per theater average. Until now, the year’s best PTA was A24’s Moonlight, which opened in October in four locations grossing just over $402K for a $100,519 PTA. Moonlight has cumed over $10.8 million to date. Previous to that, comedy Don’t Think Twice reigned atop the year’s PTA hierarchy at…...

At first glance, Mike Birbiglia‘s low-key “Don’t Think Twice” hardly looks like something that would be a box-office sensation. But this spring, the dramedy took everyone by surprise by storming the arthouse and earning one of the best per-screen averages of any indie film this year. Even more, it’s a really good movie to boot, and if you missed it, we’ve got a few copies on Blu-ray for some lucky readers.

The clock may be ticking for New York City’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema. The building that houses the arthouse theater on Manhattan’s Lower East Side has been up for sale for more than a year, and while no buyer has materialized yet, some feel it’s only a matter of time before real estate developers turn the beloved cinema into a high rise apartment building.
Read More: iPic’s Big Gamble: How a High-End Theater Chain Hopes to Change the Way We Go to the Movies
Though a number of media outlets have reported that the Sunshine’s lease will be up for renegotiation at the end of 2018, the existential threat facing the theater has less to do with its lease than the possibility that a new buyer will demolish the building and replace it with a towering apartment complex. Built in 1898, the property has a reported price tag of more than $35 million.

Comedian Mike Birbiglia first showed his filmmaking chops with his 2012 debut “Sleepwalk With Me,” which won the Best of Next Audience Award at Sundance, but he truly came into his own as a director with this year’s wonderful “Don’t Think Twice.” A favorite at SXSW and Tribeca, the comedy-drama opened to rave reviews over the summer and continues to chart on the list of the highest grossing indies of 2016.

Their group is shaken up by a “Saturday Night Live”-style sketch comedy show that could give certain members a next leg up on the road to success, which creates tension among the members and forces each to get self-relfective about their artistry.

The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards nominations are in and, somewhat unsurprisingly, Damien Chazelle’s old-timey musical La La Land has emerged as an early frontrunner.
It bagged 12 nominations in total, including nods in some of the more prestigious categories – Best Picture, Ryan Gosling for Best Actor, Emma Stone for Best Actress, Chazelle for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It’s an impressive haul for the Oscar-tipped drama, and one that will surely strengthen its status as the one candidate to beat as the weeks wear on.
Elsewhere, other films to score big in the list of nominations include acclaimed sci-fi Arrival and Fences, Denzel Washington’s adaptation that sees him in the role of a former baseball star struggling to find meaning in 1950s Pittsburgh.
