Perfect ending
x-esa14 May 2013
That was exactly the ending I was hoping it would be! Absolutely worth to watch and in my opinion the best episode for a long time.

A good ending and an even better new start for the ninth season with lots of open and interesting questions.

In my opinion this episode makes up for for all the not so astonishing episodes in this season.

It is a perfect balance between fun, good acting and a very impressive plot.

Especially the last song with the images together will give you goosebumps, that's for sure. I Don't want to spoil so just watch and enjoy it!

Just What We Hoped For

Just saw it. Special preview here.

Totally, and absolutely worth everything. To me, this is the best way a season finale should be made. Immaculate acting, plot structure.

It does leave a lot of unanswered questions. But that is the point. Season 9 will be the ending, that's without a doubt.

Marshall and Lily's departure. And of course, the Ted-Barney-Robin triangle. A lot. And more.

I know this is a vague review, but i do not want to spoil it for anyone. Just know this, it is brilliant, intelligent and touching. The viewers will not be disappointed.

The final two minutes make up for a disappointing season
simbrab29 October 2016
How I Met Your Mother has always had great season finales, culminating in live-changing events for the main characters full of all kinds of emotions. This one is no exception in being generally brilliant and hitting all the right emotions, and yet it is different. This time, the season finale is not the place and time to tie all the loose ends together and resolve them. Which explains the lackluster nature of the last couple of episodes and their shortage of plot development. Usually they build up to the plot resolution in the season finale. But what season 8 ultimately culminates in is not plot resolution, but one massive build-up. To the 9th and final season that will take all it's time for the ultimate plot resolution, tying up the loose ends that define the entire series. And those have been laid out overwhelmingly well in the final minutes of "Something New".

Let's talk about the episode title for a moment. There's a connection to the last episode but also the final two episodes of season 2 - Something Borrowed / Something Blue / Something Old / Something New. Obviously, they're all wedding-themed. It was Marshall and Lily's wedding at the end of season 2, and now the build-up to Barney and Robin's wedding at the end of season 8. But the meaning of the respective episode title goes beyond that. Lily borrowed a hat to cover up Marshall's ruined hair at their wedding. "Something Blue" refers to the blue french horn, the symbol of Ted and Robin's relationship, the end of which has been revealed in the season 2 finale. And while the Marshall-Lily-wedding coincided with Ted and Robin ending their relationship, the Barney-Robin-wedding will ultimately close the door on them. "Something Old" recalls their history in the scene at the Central Park carousel, with Robin wearing a blue blazer (coincidence or symbolism?). And besides the obvious reference to the locket, the episode title could also be interpreted as a nod to those old feelings between Ted and Robin that seem to be resurging. And now for "Something New". This episode title is even more ambiguous, there's so much it could refer to. There is a new twist to the story of Robin's lost locket. New future plans for Ted. Big news for Marshall. And the closing seconds have something new in store for the viewers, something they've been looking forward to for eight years...

One of the best season finales of HIMYM, 9.5\10
UnsustaiNiNable14 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start admitting that this season was the worst yet for this awesome series. I only liked 3 episodes this year, one of those being this one.

It starts normally, but we know something is going to change, because we need some kind of motivation to keep watching this series. And that's why the writers wisely chose to finally show us the "girl with the yellow umbrella", as it is referred to during the ending credits. And the scene was really breathtaking, that's why this very funny (compared to the season average level of humor) and serious episode is my favorite in a long time.

The actress they chose may not be the most beautiful girl Ted has been with, but hey, it's the real Mother, finally, after 8 years! And it's way more realistic this way.

I liked the Barney&Robin story, the Ted&Lily one and the Marshall&Family one too, but the true essence of this episode is in the very last 10 seconds. My heart almost exploded with joy when I finally saw the Mother.

Nice ending to a terrible terrible season. 9.5\10

Best-est Ever

Warning: Spoilers
Though this Season was the worst season of all of HIMYM but this ending compensates for that. To be true I only liked 3 episodes from this season(Namely :Who Wants to Be a Godparent,Twelve Horney Women,The Time Travelers ....others views may be different but these were my personal choice for this season).

And in the last episode of something old when the writers tried to revive "the thing" between Robin-Ted,I can't tell you how p****d off I was,I almost felt like killing the writers then and there and finish this whole drama.

...But .here is a big Whatever(where Robin wanted to hold her something old)...and this was awe---(wait for it)--some.

Starting with the Lily-Marshall chemistry to how perfect Robin-Barney are as a couple and then same Ted-Lily emotional conversation(I wonder how Lily is so smart with relationships) It ended with the most fulfilling yet making you 'to feel want more' ending ever.

Girl with Yellow Umbrella ..I am still not saying her the 'Mother'..cause still I am smelling something fishy(am I the only one?)

Something New (#8.24)

Warning: Spoilers
A great finale! One thing that sure got a lot off fans excited is that they finally show the viewers "the mother". They have been getting us glimpses of her through all the seasons and now there is her face. I am actually one of the viewers who never really cared about Ted meeting mother, but even I feel kind of thrilled about how it will end up going.

Marshall and Lily are also giving us something to wonder about until next season. I so want him to be a judge, but Lily going to Rome to have an amazing job would also be great. I am sure they won't go, it doesn't seem like they could put their trip in the time between the seasons and there is no way that last season can be without the two!.

And I loved Robin and Barney. What a wonderful couple, making their evil plans and having some nice cigars to celebrate.

10 years after it aired
nakrugt29 September 2023
I am watching this episode after ten years it aired. I thought that it was a great episode when it aired, and I still think it is. Let me explain.

First of all, everyone, who watched the show when it was on, expected that they (the producers and the writers) to reveal who the mother was in the last episode. Instead, the creators of the show revealed the image of the mother in the penultimate season, and spent the last season why she is the mother; why she was the soulmate of Ted Mosby, and how they matched. And they spent one season explaining it.

I have to be honest here: when I was watching the show ten years ago, I was not expecting this, but it was a nice and surprising route for the writers to take.

Watching the final season after all these years, I can understand once more that they made the right choice.

A Big Reveal
slightlymad221 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Season 8 closes as most of this season has been a disappointment . Barring two 10/10 episodes, and a few decent bits here and there it's been a poor season for this reviewer.

Plot In A Paragraph: Robin and Barney are out for dinner at one of their favourite restaurants, their dinner is ruined by an obnoxious couple. Robin and Barney's decide to ruin not only that couple's dinner, but their lives. Meanwhile, Marshall is in St. Cloud Minnesota, with Marvin to visit Judy, who has just learned that Marshall and Lily are moving to Rome. As Lily is on her own, she heads out to Westchester with Ted, who has finally completed the renovations on his house. Ted shocks Lily with his plans for the immediate future.

A so so ending, all the parts were fun individually but for some reason I just didn't feel it!! Maybe it's because I was expecting the season finale to be the wedding (where Ted meets the mother) I'm not sure how the next and last season will work with Lily and Marahall in Rome, Ted (and presumably the mother) in Chicago and Barney and Robin in New York but let's see how it pans out

But at least we (the viewer) finally get to see her. And boy is she cute. I have awarded a bonus point for the reveal of the mother.

Awe 'Wait For It' Some

Review By Kamal K

It has great writing and one liners, and is almost as amazing as the first season. Some of my favorite episodes are Farhampton, Twelve Horny Women, The Over-Correction, The Final Page Part One and Two, Ring Up, P. S I Love You, Bad Crazy, Weekend at Barney's, The Time Travelers, The Bro Mitzvah. This season is full of great moments, especially seeing what Ted's future wife looks like at the end of the season.

Finally!
Kingslaay1 January 2021
It has so many seasons until we got to this point. Ted really knows how to tell a long story. Good/ok episode but quite a journey to get to this point. Clearly this was before Netflix revolutionized TV shows. They really have been dragging this out

A good final minute or so does not make up for another boring episode
puzgolac5 June 2022
Oh, great, it's another drawn out episode with no jokes but full of empty, meaningless filler. It really is a wonder how they can make a 20 minute episode feel like it is 20 hours long. They are really, desperately trying to milk this whole concept well past it is dead and dried to dust. The last minute is ok, but no more than that, because it is like a meal that you have been waiting for for hours and when it finally arrives, you have lost your appetite.
