Rather dull.
parry_na24 June 2020
Mary Kaylee Bryant goes missing at her family's lake house. When she returns, the 15 year old has been relieved of much of her soul. To mark the difference between the depressed Mary and the earlier, perkier model, we are treated, in flashback, to moments of family life that are so coated in sugar, things threaten to become hyperglycaemic.

Mum has the lion's share of exposition and turns into a wise-crackin' ass kicker at the end, dad keeps telling the police they either 'need to send some people round', and when they arrive, that they 'need to leave.'

My favourite character is May's younger sister Sophia, largely because of Anne Bex's unaffected performance.

A horror for youngsters or possibly teenage girls is no bad thing. I certainly wouldn't be arrogant enough to decry this film for not catering for a beleaguered old horror git like myself. Roles are played broadly, which was probably deemed necessary to convey large amounts of often heavy-handed dialogue. If this was intended for youngsters, then I honestly think they would find the vast amount of the running time rather dull. My score is 5 out of 10.

sorry .. this is a stinker
cerabus-647-6588789 February 2016
OK, the initial premise of the story is good. After that it falls apart. Catherine Black is supposed to be a mother to a 16 year old? Sorry she can't act her way out of a paper bag. Over blown performance. Same can be said for just about all the other actors as well, poor acting, or over the top stereotypical wooden acting. The only decent acting was from Emma Gruttadauria, who didn't do a bad job, given the poor story line and scripting.

I'm sorry, this should have been a good film, but it floundered badly in my opinion. I had a hard time staying awake, and I'll watch just about anything.

Bad script
lildj224 September 2018
This movie fails to know what it is. The story idea is interesting, but the execution is poor. It's easy to blame the acting because there is no clear point of view, so we can't relate to anyone. The actors all do a great job despite these odds against them. The actress playing the mother, Catherine Black, is given the challenge of carrying the bulk of the dialogue and delivering all the information, yet the movie isn't about her, so it's confusing why she does all the talking. Her dialogue is over explanatory and corny, yet she does an incredible job delivering it and making it feel natural. Despite having all the dialogue, the movie isn't told through the mothers point of view, so it falls short. Everything is explained and not shown, which makes the actors look bad, and the story unbelievable. The movie should have been about a mother fearing the loss of her child's soul, but it's not. Mary Loss of Soul doesn't know what it wants to be, a horror movie for kids, a supernatural thriller, or a drama...it's never clear. A lot is missing from the story, and the POV jumps around, so it's impossible to relate to any character or to the circumstances. Everyone does a good job, the cinematography is good, the actors all good, but unfortunately the script and direction have many holes. It feels like something is missing. However, children might really enjoy this movie.

Annoyingly Bad
hoofbite31 January 2016
I'd make a joke about how this movie lacks any kind of soul, but that would give this movie too much credit. The movie is full of exposition, horrible acting, and some of the worst writing I have seen outside of the Lifetime network. The script is often laughable, but the film is so exhausting and anticlimactic that you would likely get more enjoyment out of reading the synopsis than actually watching it. Essentially, the title explains it all; a girl named Mary loses her soul mysteriously and slowly begins to turn white and pasty, losing interest in life as apparitions begin to appear to her and her family. They eventually decide to hire a medium (shaman) to get her soul back. Next to nothing in the story makes sense and feels cheap and easy. The actor who plays the father is a halfway decent actor but the rest of the cast is downright awful. I think it's amazing that someone was given the funding for this film after looking at the script, and even more so that it made it out of production at all. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Good concept, poor execution

Warning: Spoilers
MARY LOSS OF SOUL is an indie ghost story with a novel premise: a girl goes missing from her family and returns lacking her soul. That's not bad as it stands, but this low rent film fails to do anything with that concept and the metaphysical concepts are merely discussed in a mundane way rather than properly explored. The film has a nice lakeside setting but is badly acted and frequently boring, with the viewer failing to invest in any of the characters. Old-time actor Nick Mancuso shows up playing a cop and that's about it.

I laughed through the whole movie
redzepplin674 January 2015
It's pretty funny actually how people are trying to call this a horror movie. It's not scary. Not only that but the animations were so bad I laughed out loud; Sci-Fy channel movies are better. The whole movie is slow and boring. It's old and tiring. The acting was annoying. The story wasn't good. Also the writer/ director said she wrote this movie in like 2 weeks, and well, we could tell. Hahaha. It was obviously written in such short time. Anybody could realize that. Not to mention that the choice of cast was wrong. I could not connect to any character. The only good actor in the whole entire movie was the Irish psychic. Everyone else was bad. The movie was just plain awful. Walking out of the screening people were laughing at the movie and calling it a joke (cause that's what it is, a big joke). It's not a movie to be proud of and it's not a movie I would be proud of to tell my friends or a stranger on the street that I saw. If you want to see a cheesy, boring, movie filled with bad acting, go ahead. At least you'll laugh at the end at how terrible this movie is.

Poor movie. Good acting.
weareone_coexist22 January 2021
I thought the directing and writing was horrible. The actors did their best. The actress playing the Mother Catherine Black was really good and the only redeeming quality of the movie. She had all the lines and did an amazing job delivering all that corny dialogue and making it sound natural, which must have been very challenging. Overall just a B rated TV drama movie, not horror. I think all these negative reviews are disgruntled horror buffs who hate woman.

Ummmm.....

Quite possibly the... Worst. Acting. Ever. I watched it because Jose Zuniga and Nick Mancuso are both talented. The other members of the cast are like high school drama club. Huh, I still watched the whole thing 😣

Supernatural Suspense, Not Horror - and it's Good!
adriannabnovak22 March 2016
This movie is a clear case of genre confusion. It's a supernatural suspense, not horror. That means the story builds tension through good storytelling and character development. Supernatural stories involve paranormal elements, and the suspense is a slow burn, more Alfred Hitchcock. It doesn't depict violent, gruesome bloody acts which would be horror. It's also not a family/children movie. It's for thinking adults who want to figure out what's happening, why it happened, and how it's going to end. It's hard not to be fascinated by this movie. It has good scary elements. It's chilling, but not terror provoking. There's a deeper, subconscious connection to the mythology of "loss of soul," which is an actual condition. (Look it up, it's interesting) It delivers something very different. If you're looking for gore, you won't like this movie. It's smarter than that. It involves a functional teenage girl who is thrust into extraordinary circumstances - she's lost her soul, but is still alive. Now the fun begins! I read the reviews here and yes, there's no swearing or overt sexuality. This movie breaks some stereotypes, which is why I liked it. I didn't catch some of the nuances and honestly thought I had it figured out from the very beginning and then found out I was wrong. I enjoyed the surprise! If you can get past it being labeled horror, and if you like paranormal and supernatural, and just a Good Movie, you'll really like this one.

Excellent Movie!!
mike-516-335828 July 2016
This is a great movie! Don't listen to any negative review! Unless your IQ is below 60, or you think a scary movie has to contain a bloody pile of guts, you should enjoy this movie! Rarely if ever did a horror movie before the 60's contain blood or guts. This is something sicko's have grown to need in order to be satisfied with a horror movie these days. Your best horror movies of the past like, Dracula, Frankenstien, The Wolfman, and scary old houses with ghosts never needed gore! These are what I consider horror! Some psycho serial killer running around hacking people up isn't horror to me! It's just sick! This movie has an excellent story-line and will keep you guessing right up to the end! This movie is probably more suitable for people with taste! Not the scariest movie, but it has plenty of scares and a great plot!

Great Talent! Great Music! Great Flick!
hiramgrogan1 November 2015
I really liked this movie. I watched it with my wife and our 13 yo daughter and 12 yo son. Its creepy but not in the way a gory horror movie is that I don't let my kids watch. Its more of a 'who done it' with some twist that r cool so I like that plus my kids were interested but not scared out of their wits which was good. I liked the characters plus the fact the father is good and I don't see movies like that a lot. Overall its well done & was a really good movie & better than most of the stuff we watch on Netflix. I read another persons review and I don't get all the criticism at all. also the movie just came out a few weeks ago so how could the person review it in January that is over 10 months ago? Overall its a very good movie with lots of twist so I'd recommend it to anyone that likes some scary but not gory with an interesting topic.

Magical and spooky
nightroses2 June 2021
This was a really good movie, with a lot of strange magic to it. Kind of creepy although not really horror or a ghost story. Yet its entertaining and something for a family. Kids can watch it. The film is tame, and also has a fairytale quality. The acting is okay. It's on the same level as "Watcher in the Woods". I loved it.

Awesome Film!
rubiemccune20 January 2016
I read a bunch of reviews before I buy or watch anything especially on amazon. I think I can explain more about this movie now that I've see it and saw some one stars that I think are probably guys who want a slasher or something. I could def see it on lifetime but I don't see that as a diss. I watch Lifetime so no problem there!!! This movie is about a girl who goes missing in the woods and comes back missing part of her soul. That's not a spoiler because its in the description and starts the movie that way. The main part is figuring out why and how. (I thought that was interesting because I've never seen a movie where someone loses their soul if they're not dead and then has it haunt them) If you want a slasher or straight up horror don't watch this movie. It's smarter than that and has a supernatural thing going on. I liked the characters a lot but I agree the mom isn't so good but the dad is. The main character is good and so is her sister. I watch a lot of movies and seen way worse but this is good with a twist ending and twists along the way so I'm recommending it.
