The all-virtual Sundance Film Festival has arrested the attention of our editors and writers over the past few days, and the all-virtual Slamdance Film Festival will kick off on Thursday, offering a shockingly reasonable (US$10.00) all-access pass to more than 100 films and other events through February 6. If that's not enough to sate your cinematic appetite for new films, here are three indie films opening in movie theaters and/or on Video On Demand platforms this week. Clean The film releases Friday, January 28 in theaters, On Demand and Digital via IFC Films. Director Paul Sollet has quietly built a solid body of work (Grace, Dark Summer, Bullet Head, and his latest film sounds more of the same good stuff: "Tormented by a past life,...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Writer/director Paul Solet first made a name for himself on the horror scene with his short film “Grace,” which he later adapted into an excellent feature starring Jordan Ladd. His contribution to Tales of Halloween, a pseudo-futuristic punk rock Spaghetti Western called “The Weak and the Wicked,” reunites a few cast members from his most recent feature, Dark Summer, and also showcases a different side of Solet.
Your segment, “The Weak and the Wicked,” is very much an homage to Sergio Leone. Did the story you came up with lend itself to that aesthetic or did you set out to make a Spaghetti Western-inspired piece and design the story to match that?

When I think of horror movies that use the house arrest conceit my mind wanders to films like 100 Feet, Housebound and even Disturbia - although that one is more of a thriller, it is still a good example. Dark Summer runs with the house arrest idea but this time adding in the idea of cyber stalking and using technology to power the ghost.
In Dark Summer, Daniel (Keir Gilchrist) is put under house arrest over the summer while his mother is away on business. Banned from social media for his crime of cyber stalking and hacking he soon finds his way around it only to find the girl he is obsessed with making contact with him. ★★☆☆☆ The inertia of millennial existential malaise has been de rigueur in the horror genre of late. David Robert Mitchell terrified with a wonderful twist on teenage anxieties in his It Follows (2014), exploring the dualities of sex and the slow dread of infernal lazy afternoons. Elsewhere Starry Eyes (2014), written and directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, sought to plumb similar depths from the ennui of La creatives. Dark Summer (2015) threatens to follow suit but Mike Le's script - directed by Paul Solet - begins as though it intends to stalk the disquieting hallways of 21st century technological preoccupation before careering into rote haunted house banality.
The presence of It Follows actor Keir Gilchrist (pictured right) does little to help avoid such unfavourable comparisons. In that film he played a lovesick teen willing to sacrifice himself for Maika Monroe. On this occasion his unrequited feelings have led to some cyber-stalking and landed his character,...

On Thursday, Le shared the handwritten note via Twitter, noting that it was from "circa 1999." "Why don't you see if you can get this fax machine working," Anderson writes. While Dark Summer doesn’t exactly impress as a paranormal thriller, Mike Le’s story does manage to capture an awkward period in society where people would rather sit behind a computer screen and “research” personal facts about others, than strike a human relationship that requires conversation, interaction, and most importantly, a vulnerable connection. In a world of Tweeting, Instagramming, Tindering, and whatever controlling Apps my generation chooses over personal engagements, hacking into someone’s bank of cyber-information seems like a twisted romantic fantasy despite being an invasive breach of security. That’s the true horror of Dark Summer. Exploiting technology’s disillusioned grasp on a devolving society is what it does best. The film fails, however, to portray a convincing cyber-stalking scenario, which unfortunately turns into a lackluster haunted house story that struggles to build tension, spooky momentum, or suicidal scares.

Paul Solet: Mike’s structure was the movie that the producers were excited about making, so that stood. The principal twists and turns stand, but there were changes to the scene structure and execution. From scene to scene, within the scene, there were dialogue and structure changes.

Sentenced to house arrest for cyber-stalking a classmate, what is teenage Daniel to do? As Dark Summer gets underway, parole officer Stokes (Peter Stormare) explains to Daniel (Keir Gilchrist) what is and isn't allowed. Daniel immediately violates the terms of his sentence, enlisting his friends Abby (Stella Maeve) and Kevin (Maestro Harrell) to bring him a laptop computer. (That's two violations in one, since he's not permitted to have any unaccompanied minors in the house.) He's some kind of tech whiz, and he's already laid the groundwork so he can connect to the internet without being detected. (That's violation three.) Now he can resume his cyber-stalking of former classmate Mona Wilson, played by Grace Phipps. (That would be violation four.) Except that Daniel hesitates, and...

In the teen horror film Dark Summer, screenwriter Mike Le delivers a novel way to keep a protagonist in a haunted house: Put him under house arrest. Daniel (Keir Gilchrist), who's so into hacker chic that he's got ones and zeroes painted on his ceiling, is wearing a tracking anklet for cyber-stalking his classmate Mona (Grace Phipps). With his mom away, he's pretty much alone aside from his duty officer and two friends who secretly keep him company. He's also contacted by Mona, who kills herself during a videochat. Now her ghost is causing him to hallucinate, carving symbols into his chest, and generally haunting his house...a house he can't leave. Paul Solet's direction relies on disorienting tight shots as Daniel creeps through the halls, followed by ...

"Dark Summer" centers on a not-so-innocent teenage boy who gets put on house arrest after cyber-stalking a girl at his school. When his mother goes out of town, leaving him home alone, strange things start to happen around the house. The release of Paul Solet's sophomore feature film comes nearly five years after the Sundance premiere of his directorial debut "Grace," which was also a horror film. *Updated* Following IFC Midnight’s January release announcement for Paul Solet’s Dark Summer, we now have a look at the official trailer:
“From Paul Solet, director of the acclaimed hit Grace, comes Dark Summer, a suspense thriller combining the supernatural terror of classic horrors The Shining and Poltergeist, with the tension and modern cool of Disturbia. Summer is a time to relax, unwind, take a vacation, and be free. But 17 year old Daniel Austin gets none of that because his obsessive online stalking of his classmate and crush, Mona Wilson, got him put on house arrest for the whole summer. So, no cell phone, no Internet, no leaving the property, and especially no Mona. Then Daniel’s single mother has to go on a long business trip, and Daniel has the place to himself.
Daniel figures out a way to piggyback onto his neighbors’ wireless signal and believing he’s surfing off the grid,...

One human (Dormer) inexplicably gifted with the ability to speak the language of the infected is tasked with finding a cure for the pandemic by tracking down the mysterious Patient Zero.
It’s the most sizable big-screen role for the talented actress to date. On the TV side of things, Dormer has amassed a huge fan base over the years by playing complex characters like Anne Boleyn on Showtime’s The Tudors, Sarah Etches on BBC series The Fades...

Dark Summer
Director: Paul Solet
Writer: Mike Le
Producer: Ross M. Dinerstein
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Peter Stormare, Grace Phipps, Keir Gilcrhist
After the success of his delightfully creepy 2009 debut, Grace, director Paul Solet returns with this thriller headlined by the young star of It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and, even more excitingly, Peter Stormare. While his last film was developed from his own short, we’re curious to see how Solet branches out in genre and this next effort should give us a definite indication, with enough scant details to garner some interest.

Release Date: We’re hoping to see this in something like Tiff’s Midnight Madness line-up.
