He's Fallen Into the Water
Billy Moran plays a life guard in this hard-knocks comedy directed by Marcel Perez.
It's a fairly abrupt one-reel effort intended for the States Right market. Director Perez had been one of the stars of Italian short comedies in the first half of the 1910s and the Italian slapstick efforts of the era made Sennett slapstick look like drawing room comedies. This one reflects those sensibilities or lack thereof. Perez came to the US around 1916 and had a decent if erratic career until he was injured, had his leg amputated in 1923 and retreated completely behind the camera. He died in 1929.
The female lead is Dorothy Earle, Perez' wife. It's not a great comedy, but given the recent increased interest in Perez' work -- a Kickstarter-funded DVD of about ten of his shorts is expected before the end of 2014 -- people who are interested in his better works might want to look at this, a lesser effort.
