There have been only 13 executions of California death row inmates since 1972 (when Californians voted to reinstate capital punishment). The last execution was in 2006, of an inmate who had been on death row for 24 years. The shortest time on death row was nine years, for an inmate who refused any appeals; he was also the youngest at age 36. As of 2018, California has 744 inmates on death row.
