2014 was a fantastic year for music in Indian Cinema. We saw a definite shift from formularistic numbers to more nuanced tunes in step with the respective screenplays they would be featured alongside. Music directors were bold and brave, breaching familiarity and conventions to taking risks and we could not be more mesmerised by the results. Hamlet was adapted to a gritty and raw musical by Vishal Bhardwaj. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon basically defied gravity by re-creating the magic of Aashiqui 2 with Ek Villian. Read on as Bollyspice closely chronicles 2014’s top 10 music directors.
10. Jeet Gangulay
Jeet Gangulay’s Citylights was the silent hit of 2014 with Arjit Singh’s Mukurane becoming a crowd favourite from the get-go followed closely by Mohd. Irfan’s unplugged version of the song. While Youngistan did not do well at the box office, Gangulay’s ‘Sangemarmar’ definitely left a mark. Similarly, ‘Sun Le Zara’ from Singham was equally effective.

Last seen in One By Two, Abhay Deol has now bagged his next film, that's to be directed by cinematographer Sethu Sriram. The film in question is titled Snafu and will also feature Manjot Singh alongwith Abhay. Sethu Sriram of Wanted and Omg Oh My God! fame was keen on signing Abhay since he knew that Abhay could pull this off well. After many readings, one hears that Abhay is convinced and pretty charged up about the role. For starters, 'Snafu' is term that has originated in the army, it means Situations Normal All F****ed Up.
In the film, Abhay will be essaying the character of Kabir Taneja, a young highflying corporate consultant in Mumbai mediating mega deals with most men with big money. And Manjot will play the character of Sunny Singh, a meek and submissive slum dweller. Snafu is a thriller around common place situations as the...

Vikram Khakhar, who has films like One By Two and Virsa behind him, is not just busy working towards the release of Main Aur Charles, but also on something that might just change the way people look at horror in Bollywood. He has now formed a vertical, that's tied up with 'Team Pentacle', a group that's dedicated to Paranormal Research and UFOlogy in India. Vikram, who plans to produce movies based on real paranormal investigations, has already signed up three filmmakers for the same, like Prawaal Raman, Vivek Agnihotri and Ayush Raina. Talking about the paranormal concept, Vikram said that the whole idea was to attempt something within the said genre. He added that, of the 150 case files which Pentacle's Shishir Gupta gave him, around 20 will be shortlisted, which will gradually zero down to three, thus forming the subject matter of the aforementioned filmmakers. He also added that the pre-production...

Reacting sharply to a screaming headline on Sunday in a widely-read daily which claimed that Viacom 18, the producers of the new Abhay Deol starrer One By Two were likely to initiate legal action against the young actor for the losses incurred due to Deol's firm stand against a music company's contract, Ajit Andhare the COO of Viacom 18 says, "This is complete misinformation. No such action is being contemplated or initiated by us. No one spoke to us or cross-checked before writing this nonsense. We woke up astounded to see the article on Sunday morning." The opening of this week's new release, the Abhay Deol starrer One By Two, was not expected to be great, but the very ordinary 10-15 percent start made matters worse. The best collections came from the multiplexes of Delhi-ncr and some high end city cinemas of East Punjab. For any realistic chance of improving, the film will have to show a good jump over the two remaining days of the weekend.Meanwhile after a good to decent opening weekend of around 60 crore, the Sohail Khan...

Film: "One By Two"; Cast: Abhay Deol, Preeti Desai; Writer-Director: Devika Bhagat; Rating: ***1/2
It takes a while to figure out why this deliciously yummy concoction about urban aspirations is called "One By Two". And it would be a crime more criminal than character assassination to tell you why the two main characters in the film never meet till the closing moments.
This is a film that wears its heart on its sleeve. And it doesn't roll up that sleeve when the narrative is endangered by uncomfortable twists of circumstances. Devika Bhagat loves her protagonists Samara and Amit, quirks, excesses, flatulence and all.
The urban fable constructs Samara and Amit's dreams as a spiral of frustrations. We really don't.
