Unlike the past few episodes, there didn't seem to be a spread out focus when it comes to what theme the show was focusing on. For this episode, it was all about past and present relationships and how even when the romantic part is over, there can still be some type of friendship remaining. Take for example Simone's return. Seemingly her return was going to be used to start drama in Toby's relationship, but it ended up reminding us of the human side of Simone, and of that girl who had a crush on one of her favorite musicians. Then you have Melody and her ex- husband. Now, despite Melody being upset about the divorce, she still cares enough about the man to want him to have a relationship with his son, especially if he is trying to have one. In both instances, we see a deepness not often seen on shows like this which deals with how it is usually the basic things that makes us end up finding ourselves back in the presence of those who hurt us the most.
Outside of that, we also have all the relationships at their different stages. We have Angelo and Regina who are friends who could transition into lovers once more; Bay and Ty who sometimes feel more like newlyweds than a couple who just got together a few weeks ago; Jace and Daphne's relationships which is almost like watching two mischievous kids sharing the little they know and playing pranks on those who don't know jack; Nicki and Toby who still seem to have a rocky faith in their relationship; then Bay's relationship with Angelo which we are starting to see the complications of once more.
All in all, I found the episode rather strong and I liked the fact it referenced stuff that happened earlier in the show. It feels like, every dozen or so episodes, the show revisits what has happened to wrap up story lines, or else to bring back someone we used to know. Like with the Simone thing, they talk about how Regina became her sponsor and helped her toward sobriety. To me, in most shows they would have dropped her or just used her for flashbacks, but at least on Switched at Birth we get some type of clarity and closure. Which is one of the things I love about this show. As much as it moves forward and goes to varying story lines and topics, it every now and then revisits the past and uses it to help explain why some characters are acting as they do. Like how Daphne is protecting Parker because of the fallout that happened between her and Jeff. It makes watching the show since the beginning seem rewarding and, I'm sure, it makes people who are just tuning in wanting to catch up so they are in the know. But again, let me say, it really was a good episode.
