Foundation for an epic season!
wazza_2521 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It's always hard to follow up an awesome episode...especially if Joffrey dies at the end of it. This one was just as good.

It was a nice to see Littlefinger for the first time this season. Funny how he was completely out of the picture and yet made plans to rescue Sansa long before the wedding( Yes rings a bell now, doesn't it? )

Lord Tywin seems happy that he can finally rule the kingdom and teach Tommen how to be King, something he missed out on with Joffrey(Would've been hilarious to see him describe how to consummate a marriage)

The wildlings seem menacing since the introduction of the Magnar of Thenn. Can't wait to see how the Rangers defend Castle Black against the inevitable attack.

Oberyn Martell looks every bit prepared for payback. Him facing the Mountain , now that's something to look forward to.

Arya & the Hound are awesome together, like usual. Hound is probably the most honest and straightforward character in the show. His methods despite being harsh, stand true to the saying "Survival of the fittest " ( My favorite character )

Tyrion/ Pod sequence was perhaps the most touching one in this episode. One almost forgets how much empathy Tyrion has even though that's what gets him in trouble more often than not. Knowing Tyrion, a fortnight is NOT all he's got.

The landscape of Meereen was stunning and lived up to the hype. Daenarys seems poised in her quest and i quite liked the finishing touch with the broken chains.

Overall, this episode sets up really well for what should be a chaotic, gripping and intense second half of the season.

on the "raping" scene
ZeeRaaN26 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
**spoilers**

as this series is great in all aspects. I only want to comment on the most shocking and controversially scenes, and in this episode it was the "raping" scene as some people call it. although in my opinion it was necessarily disturbing as it is intended to be. lets go back few season back and look at the relationship between jaime and cersei. cersei likes to play victim and sometimes resist jaime when he comes at her (remember the scene when she slapped him in season one then he grip her hand and held her tightly and said "I will kill the whole bloody lot of them until you and I are the only two people left in this world" cersei melted at this although jaime had just attempted to murder a 10 year old child!! jaime is used to take charge on their relationship and he always does and cersei loves it.

now coming back to the question, but why now? on their dead son body? because jaime is a very angry person who is very passionate about his sister (when he attempted to kill Bran in season one, he did it without hesitating after looking at cersei's face, and he said " the things i do for love". cersei is his only weakness and he wanted her for days now because she is the only person in the world who makes him feel better, and in this moment he was very angry and fed up about everything (he just came from a very long journey of him being humiliated and captured as prisoner, he lost his only valuable thing, the only thing he was good at, his hand, and his only true love doesn't want him anymore). so with all those very angry feelings he got blinded and exploded the only way he knew that made him feel better before (his love cersei). this was his very disturbing way to feel better.

we have to understand that people are different, not all of us are normal, and jaime and scersi are indeed not. they are the most narcissist people, that they actually love each other and they are very convinced about their love even though they are siblings, only because they love themselves the most so they see themselves in one another!!! the way they reflect their feelings is different than any normal person, so i think the writers did a great job portraying this aspect of their characters. isn't this why we love GoT !! for all the disturbing actions!!!

I feel that some people got to love jaime in season 3 because they sympathized with him, but they forgot who he actually is. this is why I loved this scene, because it reminded us of real jaime (who is still one of my favorite characters) and i really thank the writers for being true to the characters no matter how it pisses people off.

Tyrion is arrested, Sansa flees and the Night's Watch prepare for battle
Tweekums13 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens immediately after the events of the previous instalment; Tyrion is accused of Joffrey's murder and dragged off to the cells while Sansa is spirited out of the city by Dontos… but just what will happen to her now remains to be seen as the man behind her rescue was Lord Petyr Baelish; a contender for the title of most devious man in the Seven Kingdoms. With Joffrey dead Tywin wastes no time in preparing the young Tommen for the role of king… with himself remaining the power behind the throne. Tyrion is told he will be tried in a fortnight and warns his squire Podrick to get away from the city as quickly as he can.

Away from the capital Arya is not pleased when Sandor Clegane abused the hospitality of a farmer his daughter who helped them. The Wildlings raid a village and sent a child to Castle Black to tell them what happened to draw the Night's Watch out of the castle; Jon warns against getting involved here but when it becomes apparent that the renegade members of the Watch who killed Craster are still at his keep he argues that they must deal with them immediately; if Mance Rayder gets there first and learns that there are a hundred men at Castle Black rather than the thousand soldiers Jon told him about it will be all over for them. At Dragonstone Stannis pressures Lord Davos to find a way for him to strike against the capital again. To the east Daenerys and her forces reach the city of Meereen where a challenge to one on one combat between their champion and hers is issued.

While this episode wasn't as tense as the previous one there were still plenty of exciting moments. These included some fine action scenes as the Wildlings sacked the village and the brief fight between Meereen's champion and Daario. We are still no closer to learning who actually killed Joffrey; there are plenty of contenders. The news of the men at Craster's Keep was interesting as they appeared to have been forgotten and now they promise imminent action as the Watch head to deal with them. While not exactly thrilling the scenes of Sam trying to find somewhere safe for Gilly, away from Castle Black, were enjoyable as he represents the ordinary man; he may be in the Watch but he isn't a noble or even a great fighter… something that makes the others doubt his claim of killing a White Walker. Another highlight of the episode was the return of Lord Baelish; Aidan Gillen does a great job making this totally untrustworthy character so likable to the viewer. Overall another fine episode in what is shaping up to be a great season.

Let's begin...
sharky_5521 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As we are catapulted straight into the aftermath of the Purple Wedding, immediately there is a more frenetic feel. We haven't had much action in the first two episodes and the fast paced camera shots and music set the tone of the chaos nicely. Speaking of chaos, remember the ladder? Remember Petyr Baelish, better know as Littlefinger? The most devious man in Westeros is back, and with a few whispered sentences confirms what we have been speculating: he and Olenna conspired to poison Joffrey with the necklace. Furthermore, the next scene rules out Margaery as having any part in it.

Can I just say Jack Gleeson nails his part, even in death? When I first saw those eye stones in the pilot, they were as freaky as they are now. Tywin is imposing as ever in his drilling of Tommen, the future king, how a Lannister ought to rule. You get the sense that Tywin with his stern words will once again make the Kingdom submit to his power and influence once again. Cersei in focus in the background creates the feel of a mother again seeing her child step out into a vulnerable situation.

What came next was not what I was expecting. Jaime as my favourite character enters an arc after this period of redemption. Needless to say, half raping Cersei next to the dead body of their son does not give that impression and I am very disappointed in that. Perhaps they still seek to give a villain aspect to Jaime, something I disagree with vehemently.

The pairing of the Hound and Arya is already a fan favourite and you can see why. You sense Sandor warming up to her by telling her his future plans and there is even an off reference to Daario's Second Sons. The Tully and the farmer bit on Arya's part was a nice touch to show that the commoners still hold allegiances while the war is over. It is so easy to forget that there are those common folk also affected by the larger players of the game of thrones. And we haven't seen Arya smile like that in a long, long time. Of course, the Hound is still the Hound, and we are reminded of just how the war has ravaged everyone. It's good to see Arya still upholding her morals amidst all the killing.

Gilly and Sam are two of the most humble and honest characters of the show, to give some balance and we see a brief lull of peace in Castle Black. Sam and his fat pink face is still the kind person we know, even after killing that White Walker. It's a nice way to show how much he cares for Gilly and introduce Mole's Town as well.

A sneaky reference to the Golden Company but Stannis is still as hard headed as ever, even with Mel on his side he is powerless in this struggle after Joffrey's death. I suppose it's a good chance to further flesh out Davos and Shireen for the future, and of course the Iron Bank of Bravos is going to feature as the break out card for Stannis. Mark Gatiss awaits them.

As for sexposition, I still can't get over how good the casting of Pascal was for Oberyn, even in a orgy scene he is perfect. I trust that none of us will forget his sexual preferences after this. Of course we already know who did it, so Tywin is grasping at straws, but it does serve to again emphasis the tension between the Lannisters and the Martells, even with Tywin's attempt to broker an alliance, of sorts. Can't wait for that trial. And Oberyn is a poison master, something new that we learn.

It's nice to see that Pod is still being the only friend for Tyrion. Perhaps they may build on that in the future, it is certainly more emphasised than in the books. The most important thing is that he believes Tyrion is guilty. The more people who believe this, the more chance Tyrion has of escaping this mess. I actually got chills as they said their farewells, it is very touching that Pod still thinks of Tyrion so highly despite his circumstances.

The ominous man pulling the strings of the poison may be LF and Olenna, but a certain eunuch still has not featured much in this season. I hope Varys soon makes his own mark on this unfolding story.

The wilding raid of the village is short but well done, with the ominous music and the Magnar of Thenn once again stealing the screen with his presence. I do question the tactic of warning Castle Black they are coming, even if Jon already knows. Thorne and Jon both do a good job here in rallying the NW to prepare for the upcoming battle. Jon it seems has matured since his ranging beyond the Wall. I wonder how he and Ygritte will eventually meet again.

Ending up in the East, Meereen finally beckons Dany and her army. The CGI city is gorgeous and a spectacle to look at, the massive gates a reminder of those of Troy. I'm still not sure what I make of new Daario, but he did the job quite nicely and certainly won't have trouble keeping up with the likes of Jorah and Barristan. The wink was a nice touch.

The King Is Dead, Long Live the King
claudio_carvalho12 May 2014
Tywin instructs Tommen how a good king shall rule his realm. Then he makes an agreement with Oberyn Martell to help the Lannister House. Sansa escapes with Dontos to a ship where Littlefinger welcomes her and tells that she is safe now. Tyrion releases his squire Pod from his duties to save his life. Arya and The Hound are received by a farmer and his daughter that offer food and shelter to them; on the next morning, The Hound steals his silver and follows his journey with Arya. Two rangers escape from Craster's Keep and arrive at Castle Black. Jon advises that Rast and Karl must be killed since they know the defenses of Castle Black and they will disclose them to Mance if they are captured. Daario easily kills the champion of Meereen and Daenerys promises to release all the slaves in the city.

In "Breaker of Chains", the Machiavellian Tywin immediately initiates the preparation of Tommen for his future position of king. The King is dead, but long live the King. The danger that is the presence of the traitors at Craster's Keep will force the Night's Watch to return the North to eliminate them. Daenerys will certainly conquer Meereen and increase her army. My vote is eight.

Breaking the chains
TheLittleSongbird25 January 2018
Came to 'Game of Thrones' fairly late in the game and due to being so busy the binge-watching was gradual. Have found myself truly loving the show, very quickly becoming one of my favourites. It totally lives up to the hype and not only does it do the brilliant source material justice (a rarity in television) it is on its own merits one of the finest, most addictive and consistently compelling shows in recent years and quality-wise it puts a lot of films in recent years to shame.

"Breaker of Chains" is a slight let down after the incredible "The Lion and the Rose", nevertheless it was an excellent episode. Can totally see where people are coming from regarding the much-talked about controversial scene, and while it is open to interpretation that doesn't stop me from not being the biggest fan of the scene respectfully. It was uncomfortable to watch and not only added nothing, other than reminding us of what Jaime is capable of, but didn't fit with the rest of the episode. Personal opinion though.

Really liked the story development and direction it's going. It is very hard to follow on from an episode as special and emotionally impactful as "The Lion and the Rose" but "Breaker of Chains" does so very well if not quite as powerful. The tension and emotion are great, the storytelling absorbs and it is always great to see Daenerys getting meaty scenes and Cersei being more interesting than she has been in a while. Tyrion and Jaime are especially well written here.

While all the acting is never less than fine, Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and particularly Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau are the standouts here.

Visually, "Breaker of Chains" looks amazing. The scenery is throughout spectacular, the sets are hugely atmospheric and beautiful on the eyes with a real meticulous eye for detail and the costumes suit the characters to a tee. The make-up is beautifully done. The visual effects are some of the best of any television programme and are not overused or abused, the scale, the detail and how they actually have character and soul are better than those in a lot of the big-budget blockbusters. As well the cinematography and editing, which are cinematic quality as well.

One cannot talk about "Breaker of Chains" without mentioning the thematically, orchestrally and atmospherically multi-layered music scoring and the unforgettable main theme. Again, worthy of a high-budget fantasy/action/drama film.

It is hard not to be bowled over by the quality of the writing, outstanding isn't a strong enough adjective to describe how good the writing is once again. It always has a natural flow, is layered and thought-provoking and demonstrates a wide range of emotions such as suspenseful tension, poignant pathos and witty humour. The story is paced beautifully, structured with such nuance and attention to coherence, a high emotional level and is done with intelligence, passion and sensitivity.

All in all, excellent. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The Trials of Tyrion
Hitchcoc2 June 2015
With the death of Joffrey, the Lannisters are convinced that Tyrion is the culprit. He sits in a dungeon because Sersei has the power to make a decision like that. We know this is the case and he is being used as a scapegoat because no one likes his sarcasm and disdain for their ways. He is such a sympathetic character, carrying the weight of prejudice from all avenues. His new bride is now in the hands of Littlefinger who may be the baddest of the bad in this series. His duplicity is so calculating. He is biding his time. There is now an issue as to who is in charge, since the marriage to Joffrey was never consummated. Sersei and her father begin to set the stage for the other brother. Jaime, who one moment is admirable and the next despicable, has sex with his sister next to the body of the young king. This is a hard one to watch. Meanwhile, Dany has reached the evil city she has been marching toward and there is a great Indiana Jones type scene. The Hound and Arya continue to travel together and he continues his survival of he fittest thing with some poor farmer and his daughter who do him a kindness.

Tyrion you heart conqueror
sagarsharma-3350521 July 2021
The best moment of the episode came when Tyrion says to his squire that he is the most loyal squire ever lived. Tyrion is the only real good man in that witty world.

On the move
ahmed_dfsf21 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Game of thrones moves on , as each of the characters climb another step on the ladder of their destiny. Will they all make it to the end? We don't know that yet, but what we do know is that many of our beloved have fallen this ladder.

Now comes Tyrion, We all love the noble imp and no one wants to see him dead for some thing he did not do. we do hope that he doesn't slip his foot off this climb.

Cersei loves her children , but no more than Jamie loves her. Yes, we saw Jamie loving a "HATEFUL WOMAN"..

Oberyn Martell on the small council? Yes, How convincing of you Lord Tywin, Of course the richest man in Westeros gets what ever he needs even if he has to bargain one of his own .. "The mad dog of Tywin Lannister". we would really love to see Oberyn and Gregor Clegane meet, quite a moment that would be, as the prince of Dorne wants revenge for his late sister. The mountain killed her and her children on the orders of Tywin Lannister. the master commands and the dog obeys. someone like Oberyn would not let that pass. Bad blood between the two families??? YOU BET!!

Furthermore we saw Sansa and Arya the two stark girls , each on their separate paths. Lord little finger is not that little after all , his love for the mother of the girl still lives as we saw him planning her escape from the snake's pit also known as King's Landing. Lucky Sansa but not so lucky Ser Dontos , of course Peter Baylish doesn't want to leave any lose ends , the guy is cold hearted as always. Giving Dontos the reward for his struggle by putting an arrow through his face. Let's wait and see what he really means to do with the stark girl. On the other side Sandor Clegane wishes to take Arya to her aunt, more like sell her to her aunt. Blood brothers these two, Sandor and Gregor and the blood is not so nice after all. That is no way to treat someone who gives you food and shelter , well what can we say , we all kind of expected that.

The Wildings are also on the move as they make their way towards castle black, killing humans is what they're good at OR eating them , well if you're a "THENN" the clan who just joined Tormund and his band. Will there be a war? will Jon and Ygritte meet again? Is castle black ready for them? let's wait and find out.

Daenerys and her children reach Meereen and there is no welcome party? how rude of you Meereen.... OH WAIT! yes there is and it's not so welcome also it's not a party , The champion of Meereen has no right to humiliate the mother of dragons , speaking of dragon we didn't see them .. where were they? probably hunting or something. Now back to the champion , yeah so the champion was no match for the charming Daario , Don't we all think he really loves her? OH... Ser Jorah will not be so delighted. Furthermore after Daenerys's arrival speech she fired barrels into the city which contained broken chains and thus the title of the episode was born "BREAKER OF CHAINS".

Marvellous
lars_boeren17 April 2020
I am watching Game of Thrones for the first time, and to see all this that you guys have seen is pretty cool actually. This was once again a great episode. The opening shot was amazing and so nice to see Joffrey laying dead. The acting of Lena Heady in this episode is incredible and very realistic. The thing I didn't like was Jaime. His whole character arc that has been building up from season 1 until now actually, is just thrown away in one scene, u know the one. But the ending was amazing. I love Dany so much and we haven't seen her very much this season, I hope that will change in the following episodes

Not nearly as excellent as the first two, but is still interesting
Breaker of Chains isn't nearly as excellent as the first two, but it's still a great episode. Yes, the pacing does feel a bit uneven and the rape scene was a bit unnecessary, but those are the only problems I have and everything else turned out fine.

The performances are still good, the storyline/script continues to be well-written, the directing is still solid, the relationships continue to shine, the editing is sharp, the music score is still beautiful while maintaining a sense of atmosphere, and the characters continue to be interesting. So, overall, not nearly as excellent as the first two, but it's still interesting.

Good, if a little meandering and boring
i-am-so-original21 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Breaker of Chains was certainly a slower episode than the previous three, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. After Joffrey's death, a shocking event reminiscent of a season finale, it's evident that these next couple of episodes will be a little slower, building more plot and character to fill-in the kingship and give everyone time to move their chess pieces a little more.

There were many focuses in the episode – Sansa being rescued by Littlefinger, Cersei mourning Joffrey and being raped by Jaime, Tyrion being locked in the basement, Oberyn and Tywin discussing their history, Sam and Gilly's protection storyline, Stannis and Davos, The Hound and Arya, and finally, finishing the episode, Daenerys and her slaves.

So, while the show encompasses many of the world's characters and advances their story, the downside of focusing on so many characters is that some of the story lines are bound to fall flat. Cersei mourning and subsequently being raped by Jaime was a silly scene. Tywin's "What Makes a Good King" speech was amazing, with a great performance by Charles Dance, but Cersei had little to do but stare at her son with those silly pieces of wood with painted eyes on them. After Tywin and company leave, Jamie comes in, they have an awkward conversation, and Jamie subsequently rapes Cersei. It seems to be an unnecessary scene, and we'll see the outcome of it in future episodes, but the scene itself seemed silly and melodramatic. Why is Jaime raping Cersei? It was disappointing to see, as Jaime has developed so much as a character throughout Season 3 that I've come to like him, but then he goes and rapes Cersei, and as much as I hate her as character, it was too mean and sadistic to watch. It completely devolved Jaime's character and development. I was excited to see where his character was going, as he seemed to be disowning the Lannisters and growing into his own isolated character, but now he's back to loving Cersei and having sex with her. It's possible he was trying to hurt her, but raping your sister while laying next to your dead son's corpse was a new low for not only Jaime, but maybe even the show in general.

Another scene worth discussing is Tyrion's imprisonment in King's Landing. Tyrion, now sporting a five o'clock shadow and forced to wallow in his own poop, he has reached a new low. What is always amazing to me is how noble Tyrion is and how brave he is in regards to how other's perceive him. His scene with Podrick was a touching one, especially at the end when he tries to protect Podrick by making him leave King's Landing due to his fear of Podrick's death. Podrick is his one true ally at this time (Bronn is in questioning, too), and he allows Podrick to disappear for the safety of his own life rather than use him as a pawn in his testifying against killing Joffrey. Podrick was arguably his only remaining move for his defence, and now that he's gone, it shows not only that Tyrion is in deep trouble, but also that he's noble and selfless enough to forego his own life in exchange for a younger, more ambitious one, and I love him even more now for it.

The final scene worth discussing (this would be too long if I discussed all of them) is Daenerys'. This was another scene I was not particularly fond of. Emilia Clarke has never been the greatest actress, and her "Queen" Daenerys" scenes have always come across as kind of awkward and non-threatening. Daenerys is supposed to be young but intimidating, but Emilia Clarke's performance has never portrayed this correctly. Instead, it seems far too forced, and it makes Daenerys appear more questioning or not as confident as she should be. Another detractor from the scene is that we have seen this scene about five times in the show now. Daenerys' storyline needs to start getting a move on, and soon. Yes, her takeover of Astapor was badass and a highlight of Season 3, but now we've seen her intimidating cities two more times, and it's getting quite old. I don't need to see Daenerys building her army of slaves (sorry, free men) any more; I get it, she has a large army and she's powerful and fearful. While it may have worked in the novels, it is coming across as boring, meandering, and even repetitive in the show. What was supposed to be a badass ending to the episode instead left me yawning and wanting some more development for her story.

Many of the scenes this episode were great. Arya and The Hound had funny moments, but they're back to be antagonists again, continuing the theme that we seem to be going in circles. Sam and Gilly's storyline was also a little boring, and Sam's argument about her protection from the Night's Watch was ridiculous. In my opinion, she would actually be much safer with them, and at least there Sam could keep an eye on her personally. Stannis and Davos' scenes added nothing to discuss.

The best scene of the episode was easily Littlefinger and Sansa. It added great intrigue to the episode, it gave us a potential killer of Joffrey in the duplicitous Littlefinger, the dialogue was fantastic and dramatic, and the cinematography of the scene was spectacular, with the fog adding a sense of dread to the already near-pitch black darkness of the ship.

Overall, it was a good episode, if a little meandering and boring. I realize that now that Joffrey is dead, the show needs to lay some more groundwork for its upcoming episodes, and that's fine. I just wish it could have been done a little more entertainingly.

The trial in two months
AvionPrince1628 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So Tyrion will have the right to have a trial and can have coma witness. But what will happen to him? We already know thats not him who did it. It was littlefinger who admit it to Sansa who leaved the Lannisters to get away: what future for Sansa? What new role for her? Tyrion will get a right trial or is he gonna be guilty because they want him dead too? The wildlings look more and more dangerous and make Snow worried. Jaime and Cersei have sex again even if Cersei didnt agree this time. A rape who really can make us things come back like it was before. Tywin also revealed that he had nothing to do with the death of Oberyn Martell sister: is it true? Or just a trick to make him follow a plan that Tywin have for him? The episode is still interesting and make us wonder what wiill happen to Tyrion mostly. We see Daenerys get more and more powerful and still make people realise that they are slave and get used by the people. We can see also that the Lannister prepare the younger boy to be a king and replace Jeoffrey. But he looked more different in any kind of Jeoffrey and he is more interesting from what i saw and the few dialogues that he answered to his father. Sound promising. Need to see more.

Breaker of Chains. S4 EP3 review
mohammedadallawati25 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Soundtrack : (9.2/10) Dialogue : (9.6/10) Story : (9/10) Cinematography : (9.1/10) Character Development : (9.2/10) Conflict : (9.4/10) Excitement : (9.2/10) Reasonableness : (9.1/10) Overall : (9.2/10)

Pros : -A sick beginning to the episode. It grabs the audience's attention immediately and get him engaged in the episode. Sansa flees off, Tyrion gets arrested.

-I love Peter Baelish. It's crazy how he is the mastermind of every action going on. His dialogues are mind blowing and it's really entertaining trying to figure out his next move. What a player of the game of thrones.

-Tywin lecturing Tommen is class. I love how he uses examples from history to support his ideas. A great way in lecturing children.

-Arya and The Hound are always perfect. Their scenes are adorable and hilarious. The lessons he teaches her are incredibly important for her character.

-Shereen is always cute and adorable. I love how Davos treats her like an equal and enjoys his time with her.

-Tywin's scene with Oberyn is a hell of a great scene. Oberyn rivaling Tywin in dialogues is just awesome. Could be my favorite scene in this episode.

-Podrick's scene with Tyrion is heartbreaking. Their relationship is really amazing. And as Tyrion said, "there has never lived a more loyal squire"

-Ole's introduction is sad. The argument in Castle Black is equally great.

-Daario's duel was a great way to show his skill. I wished they included Strong Bellwas as they did in the books but Daario is fun as well.

Cons : -Jaime and Cersei's scene beside Joffrey was a bit strange. I think that they must've cut this scene but somehow it slipped. But their talk before it was really good.

-I didn't t care about Gilly in whatever town she was in. The idea that she would stay there is completely fine but I don't t think the scene in there was necessary. Although she getting annoyed at Sam for it was good.

Kill the man for you
dannylee-7808225 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. Jaime rapes Cersei 2. Wildlings march south 3. Dhario wins a duel

Tywin's dialogue with Tommen is so perfect. So many subtleties that push himself as the man with true power because he will be an "advisor" to the young king.

Man, they really had to make Jaime to rape Cersei in like the "morgue". Just when we thought Jaime was a decent person, he goes ahead and does this. What a screwed up bunch of siblings.

Keep falling more in love with Daenerys. She rules with compassion, wisdom AND strength. There has been very few leaders that could do that.

Situation is quite dire in Castle Black. They are very under resourced and underprepared for a full scale attack. It's so distant from King's Landing but still tension is building up.

Overall, great episode that did a good job bringing the pace back after an explosive episode.

Captivating

Warning: Spoilers
BREAKER OF CHAINS is another fine episode, perhaps a very slight comedown after the high of the Purple Wedding previously, but still eminently enjoyable. Sansa's plotline is the most captivating and exciting, but there's great work too from Daenerys and Tyrion and the material at Castle Black gets more exciting by the episode.

King is Dead
GusherPop2 March 2023
It is such a delight to see once more across our TV screens that it can almost be forgiven that the "find Sansa" shots of Tywin were almost certainly done in pick-up given the awkward angle that tries mightily to dissuade the viewer from seeing any other character. Give us a dead Joff, and we can ignore the odd nature of this framing. Luckily, it curtails into one of the most atmospheric moments yet in the season when Ser Dontos takes Sansa down to meet another member of this little conspiracy: Petyr Baleish, aka Littlefinger. Tyrion and Sansa shippers, the girlish wolf has caught the last ship out of King's Landing in the same moment that Ser Dontos caught a bolt to the neck. This sequence brings Littlefinger's importance in the series back to the forefront in a big, big way. First, it establishes that Littlefinger now has complete power over Sansa's life (eeewww) and that he has been feeding her false hope through Ser Dontos for several episodes now-I also highly doubt that when he says "sailing home" he means ashen Winterfell. Next, and more importantly for the larger game, it demonstrates just how far this man's unknown ambition will take him. Littlefinger obviously did not poison Joffrey himself, but he is most certainly a member of a conspiracy that knew when to whisk Sansa Stark out of the Capital and that the king had died within moments of his last joyous gasp. This is a man who was raised up high by the Lannisters and made Lord of Harrenhaal after he negotiated a unifying truce with House Tyrell, and he has now betrayed them all. Or has he? Speaking of the Tyrells... Margaery and Olenna Tyrell consider Joffrey's death with the same mild annoyance that's usually reserved for traffic delays and bad sushi for us smallfolk. Neither express much astonishment over the boy's demise, however Margaery shows some pain toward witnessing the little brat suffocate. It is only she and Joffrey's true father who mourn the dead. Also the only two who ran to Joffrey's aide as the life choked out of him last week, Jaime and Cersei show the genuine grief of parents over Joffrey's unloved corpse. Jaime even seems to fleetingly consider Cersei's request to murder Tyrion out of love for her, despite Jaime thankfully doubting the younger brother's culpability. Still, these are Lannisters, and the Lannister twins at that. Thus, something truly dysfunctional must occur: enter the Twincest.

Not Too Bad of an Episode
Rainey-Dawn17 September 2018
Season 4, episode 2. Cersei has accused Tyrion of murdering her son. Tyrion is being held in a cell awaiting trial for the murder of Joffrey. Jaime forces Cersei to have sex with him by their dead son's body. Tywin has made a deal with Oberyn Martell - even though Tywin does suspect Oberyn of murdering Joffrey. Sansa left King's Landing and is with Littlefinger on his ship. Arya is with The Hound - he's trying to get her to her aunt's home. The Wildlings sent word with a boy to Black Castle they are on their way.

Great Symbolism
InnerCabbage14 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really like the ending symbolism of the broken chains. It doesn't have any deaths but the cinematic scenes at the end were great. It really solidifies the dragon queen's arc. I enjoyed that more than the other parts for sure and it just shows this show has so many strong characters and arcs. First time watching it but so many good things in store. Also the raid from the wildings was sad, curious what will happen next in the North. Currently awaiting what will happen to the drarf (i forget his name) but also with the Lannisters. Should be a fun season and can't wait for more! Also hope Jon Stark's girl and him reunite.
