of Montreal have announced their new album, Lady on the Cusp, due out May 17th via Polyvinyl. The indie veterans have also unveiled a string of 2024 tour dates and dropped a new single, “Yung Hearts Bleed Free,” with an accompanying music video. See all of Montreal’s upcoming shows and watch the new music video below.
Frontperson and primary creative force Kevin Barnes has billed Lady on the Cusp as both a summation of the band’s previous work and a personal goodbye to Athens, Georgia. The artist had lived in the city since the mid-1990s, famously working with the Athens-based Elephant 6 Recording Company before recently relocating to Vermont. The songs of Lady on the Cusp, written and recorded in the months before the move, serve as the last of Barnes’ work as an Athenian.
Pre-orders for the album are ongoing. Check out the artwork and full tracklist below.

French director Leos Carax has revealed new details about his upcoming autobiographical film, C’est pas moi, which he says is “about 40 minutes long” and may be ready in time for Cannes.
“It started with a museum in Paris. They asked me to do a self-portrait,” the director explained of the project, which is now in post-production. It is produced by Charles Gillibert and sold by Les Films Du Losange.
Denis Lavant acts in the film, as does his daughter. “The rest of it is images from archives, from other people, and from me with my iPhone,” said Carax. Lavant has...

French filmmaker Leos Carax discussed the sacred nature of the image and the challenge of retaining its power on the big screen in the digital age in an on-stage conversation at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event on Monday.
The filmmaker said he had transitioned to shooting in digital in his segment of the 2008 feature Tokyo!, one of his first works after the death of his beloved cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier, who died age 52 in 2003.
Carax revealed this move had changed his filmmaking process as he took the decision to stop watching the dailies from then on, which resulted in him ditching his habit of doing multiple retakes.
The director admitted that 15 years on, he is not a huge fan of shooting in digital.

There's a piece of advice that every writer gets at some point in their career, and it goes like this: "Write what you know."
It's not bad advice if you don't take it too literally. "Write what you know" doesn't mean that you should only write about your own autobiographical experiences, it means that when you do write from experience you'll probably be able to write more truthfully, more meaningfully, and in more detail than if you had to make it all up from scratch. Even if you write about strange new planets filled with creatures totally unlike anything found on Earth, you're probably better off finding an angle that speaks somehow to your personal interests, your beliefs, or your memories.
The irony of course is that as writers keep on writing, eventually "what they know" the most about is being a writer. You may have noticed that a whole...

Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh has said that he wrote a transgender character into Season 2 of Crime to show how people are struggling with their identity in the modern world.
The Dougray Scott drama will stream in the UK on Itvx next month and follows detective Ray Lennox as he returns to crime fighting in Edinburgh following a breakdown.
Lennox quickly becomes embroiled in a case about vengeance, identity, and social justice after one of his former colleagues is attacked.
Produced by Buccaneer Media, Crime Season 2 has cast Boy Meets Girl star Rebecca Root as a transgender character who is navigating a world that has not fully accepted her identity.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Welsh said he wanted to be “sensitive” to gender identity issues in the show, which engaged a trans advisor during filming.

“Medusa Deluxe” is here.
Truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, it’s a murder mystery set in a hairstyle competition. All of the characters are hairdressers, who have very strong opinions on hairstyles and on who the likely murderer is. Oh and the whole thing is shot like a single take (think “1917”), which adds to the sense that you are actually there, at the scene of the crime.
And while it might be easy to identify some of writer/director Thomas Hardiman’s influences, he is more than happy to run through key texts. There are many different, very strong flavors in “Medusa Deluxe” and they all work incredibly well together.
TheWrap spoke to Hardiman about where the movie came from, why the single-shot aesthetic was so important and why he’d really love to direct a “Where’s Waldo” movie (hint: it has to do with the...

Simon Carlyle, the co-creator of hit BBC sitcom Two Doors Down, has died aged 48.
Carlyle’s manager Amanda Davis confirmed the news in a statement to Pa Media.
“I am immensely sorry to confirm that Simon Carlyle has died at the age of 48,” Davis said.
“Simon was a wonderful person and a major comedic talent. He was much respected across the industry both for the quality of his writing and for being a kind, funny, supportive and nurturing collaborator. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and colleagues.”
With Gregor Sharp, Carlyle was the co-creator of Scottish BBC sitcom Two Doors Down, which stars the likes of Arabella Weir and Alex Norton as neighbours in a suburban street in Scotland, who are “all a bit nuts,” according to an interview with Carlyle several years ago.

February, marking both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, is the kind of stretch from which a programmer can mine plenty. Accordingly the Criterion Channel have oriented their next slate around both. The former is mostly noted in a series comprising numerous features and shorts: Shirley Clarke and William Greaves up to Ephraim Asili and Garrett Bradley, among them gems such as Varda’s Black Panthers and Kathleen Collins’ Losing Ground; a six-film series on James Baldwin; and 10 works by Oscar Micheaux.
Meanwhile, the 23-film “All You Need Is Love” will cover the blinding romance of L’Atalante, the heartbreak of Happy Together, and youthful whimsy of Stolen Kisses; four Douglas Sirk rarities should leave their mark, but I’m perhaps most excited about three starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Perhaps more bracing are 12 movies by Derek Jarman and four by noir maestro Robert Siodmak. Also a major...

Bonnie Bartlett Daniels says moving to Hollywood with husband William Daniels ultimately saved their marriage.
The actress, 93, had previously opened up about the couple’s experiments with an open marriage early on in their relationship, saying it was “very painful.”
Now, she adds that such an arrangement was common back in the 1950s.
“You have to realize that we live in a very puritanical nation still,” Barlett Daniels told People in an interview Tuesday to promote her new memoir Middle of the Rainbow. “[When we got married], people were just loose about things. The only thing is that it harms you, does some damage to your self-esteem. It hurts really badly.”

“Subtraction,” from idiosyncratic Iranian helmer-writer Mani Haghighi is a tense Hitchcockian thriller set in Tehran, where a heavy, non-stop rainfall signals a lingering malaise. There, a young couple come across their doppelgängers. The film premiered at the Toronto festival.
The idea for the plot grew out of the helmer’s long-ago trip to Southwest Iran to look at places where the Iran-Iraq war took place.
“It was a hot summer day and I wandered into a local mosque to cool down and get some rest,” Haghighi says. “The people who ran the mosque had put on an exhibition of photographs from the war years. I was casually looking at these pictures and I was suddenly transfixed by one of them. It was a picture of me, in military uniform, badly wounded in the neck, being carried by two other soldiers. Since 1984, Leos Carax has only made five features, and all but one of them have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, usually to feverish anticipation. This year, festivalgoers will be looking to see how the 60-year-old French maverick—aka Alex Christophe Dupont—will top his intoxicatingly strange 2012 competition entry Holy Motors, which featured talking limos, chimpanzees and Kylie Minogue. They’ll get their answer when Cannes raises the curtain tonight on this year’s opener Annette, a thematically dark, visually kaleidoscopic rock opera he co-wrote with U.S. pop duo Sparks, and which stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.

Sparks, the long-running electro-pop duo featuring brothers Russell and Ron Mael, have released another duet between Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard from their upcoming film, Annette. “We Love Each Other So Much” straddles the line between Eurodisco and the melodrama of a Phantom of the Opera outtake, as Driver sings about “scoffing at logic” and Cotillard describes their union as “counterintuitive.” As with many Sparks songs, it builds from there.
The song follows the release of “So May We Start,” another song with Driver and Cotillard, that features in Annette,...

The collection, worth an estimated $2.5 million, includes first editions and first appearances from the Avengers, Justice League, X-Men, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the Hulk as well as a number of comics rom the so-called Golden Age covering the 1930s through the 1950s.
The collection contains non-superhero comics from romances (Boy Meets Girl) to religious stories (He’s The Greatest), science fiction magazines and Mutt and Jeff books that date back to the early 20th century.

French filmmakers Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh met at university while studying political science before diverging towards separate careers. Trouilh trained in documentary filmmaking; Liatard worked on urban artistic projects in Lebanon and France. They eventually joined back up to film three shorts: “Gagarine,” a Sundance Channel Shorts Competition Jury Prize winner in 2016; “The Republic of Enchanters”; and their latest, “Blue Dog,” which is in competition at UniFrance’s MyFrenchFilmFestival, available on VOD platforms around the world.
In “Blue Dog” the pair weaves a story of inclusion along with one rooted in a father-and-son relationship, all in a mixed tone of realism and fable. “The movie enlightens the strength of the community against isolation, especially in the kind of neighborhood we are filming,” they say.

Everyone is excited for the new Spider-Man sequel, and the internet has been buzzing since the trailer dropped this week. It’s fun to see all our favorite actors from the first film and to see Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. The cast is solid, and the story looks like it will be exciting, but another aspect of the film that has people talking is the diversity in this cast that is greater than others we’ve seen so far in the McU’s history.
There was some talk from viewers who spotted two trans actors in the trailer. It was confirmed by Advocate, and here’s what they posted about the actors.

My gender identity is complex, but my life experiences intersect frequently with those of trans women and it’s a category I feel proud to be partially resident in. I dress femme, I’m starting estrogen in a couple weeks, I’ve flirted with voice training, and when I go out for a walk it’s pretty solid odds that at least one passer-by is going to scream some shopworn slur at me. This review was a deeply personal experience for me, and it’s as much a breakdown of my thoughts on life as a trans person as it is a dissection of a sweet, uncomplicated rom-com.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smarter, warmer, more honest depiction of human sexuality than this roundrobin of emotion and attraction. I love this movie. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ricky (Michelle Hendley) hates life in her small rural Kentucky town. She’s working in a cafe there only until she hears back from the New York design school she’s applied to; she dreams of having her own line of clothing and already has quite a following on her YouTube channel devoted to fashion. She and her purely platonic best friend Robby (Michael Welch: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1) pass their time hanging out and have teasing conversations about the differences between men and women when it comes to love and sex and relationships.
All totally normal for a couple of young 20somethings.

It is hard to think of a more generic title for a romantic comedy than Boy Meets Girl, although the newest film from writer/director Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) is much more unique than its limp name implies. The title does not refer to a meeting between two people of different genders, but the merging of gender identities. Protagonist Ricky (Michelle Hendley) was born a man but identifies as a woman. As a child, she dressed up in gowns for Halloween. In high school, she ditched football for fashion blogging and dress designing.
In a time when greater awareness about the transgender community has created much more cultural acceptance, watching Boy Meets Girl feels both liberating and limiting. That liberation comes from Schaeffer’s openness to delve into questions of gender, identity and sexuality, However, familiar plotting, characters and dialogue limit the depth of the drama. Regardless, one can...
