The only reason why this show is rated low is because it involves the killing of sharks. While I don't really love how the show glorifies these killings sometimes, I understand the work ethic and passion that these men have to try to catch a trophy fish while competing against hundreds of other boats all fishing in a concentrated area. I've been there. I've kept makos and threshers, but I've also released more than I could ever recall. It is a true feat landing these beautiful creatures, and while their populations are certainly down, noaa has implemented more strict regulations on these species. For example, when this show was being filmed (6 years ago), the mako regulation was 54 inches from snout to fork of the tail. Now, the mako regulation is 71 inches (FL) for males and 83 inches (FL) for females. Obviously, people are still going to kill these fish by accident or if they are lucky enough to catch a keeper, but please be aware that recreational fisherman DO NOT do the bulk of the damage. A good analogy would be that a single person smoking is contributing to pollution, but not as much as a factory is. Commercial fishing is killing the sharking fishery.
