Shallow imitation
Writing this before series 14 airs. May update in future, but... the current era of who that's annoyingly been given its own moniker for no other reason of trying to look special is not the same show I once loved.
I still adore this franchise but the main show feels so corperate and empty now, the show, how weight and depth to it. Now it's just trying to fit itself into the disney show formula, whilst bringing back enough people who use to work on the show and building up enough to get the fandom high on copium, to the point they'll accept any old slop as long as it reaches mainstream popularity because for some reason the doctor who fandom is more obsessed with the show being popular than good.
Out of the 4 stories we've seen so far and trailers for what's to come everything feels so deeply corperate, that overly bright thematically empty not driven by any particular passion type of production line entertainment that you shouldnt accept in your media. Blatant plotholes, no real narrative or thematic ties beyond "oh that happened because uhh... don't think about it". The show even at its silliest usually has understandable reasons to do things beyond "doing this appeals to the audiance ig"... narrative reason and thematic weight hold no bareing like they use to, character drama feels stale and recycled and formulaic carried by good actors and nothing else. And the pacing was abysmal and nonsensical. On top of that it feels like rtd is going out of his way to not rlly subvert expectations more as he's obsessed with not doing what anyone with sensible writing ability would do, which is meant to come across new and fresh but just comes across incompetant and uninspiringly pulling deus ex machina's out your arse.
The new epsidoes are just fine, production line, boring, everything you'd expect and less. Somehow that feels worse than actually having something terrible because atleast terrible media is something to pick apart. An idea that shot for the moon and failed spectacularly. This wasn't shooting for the moon it was shooting for LAX, and it barely left Stansted.
I rlly wish my favourite franchise, this world I fell in love with, didn't just become another mcu clone with all its warts on full display and its spirit and energy gone, that needlessly defensive fanboys will kill yih for criticising. But thus is life.
