Pretty good
Shane31824 February 2014
I was unsure what to expect going into this episode. Going by the promos, it seemed that they were advertising it as a funny one-shot episode that involved Dean and Sam (and no Castiel) going undercover to a resort in search of a person or monster who is killing people after taking away all of the fat in their body.

First off, they shouldn't have advertised this as a funny episode because I can think of probably 3 funny moments in the whole episode, and all 3 of those were scenes included in the promos. All together, it was not meant for laughs, it was a fairly serious episode.

I still hold to what I said with my last week's review; we're at a point where I think the characters need to focus on the actual story a bit more. Like always, the real story was written off in the first few scenes with the brothers, saying something along the lines of "well, I've been doing research regarding the important plot points in the story, but since I can't find anything, let's do a case instead." This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think the writers could be a little more subtle about avoiding the actual conflict.

The case itself was decent and enjoyable for the most part. And for people who enjoy the episodic cases of Supernatural, this might be the perfect episode for them because it's a simple enough conflict that can be resolved by the end of the hour. The supporting characters were good and given a bit of back-story that made them more relatable, which is really all I can ask of new supporting characters. If they're only going to be there for one episode, the least the writers can do is make them memorable in some way, and I think the writers accomplished that here.

One small gripe I have is that Castiel is, once again, not even mentioned. For a character who is now living with them, we really don't see him at all. It's not that Cas needed to be in this episode, in fact, it might have been better to leave him out because a lot of this was focused on the brothers and their relationship. However, I would have liked them to at least acknowledge Cas' existence.

I have no doubt that the deep, emotional scenes between the brothers will be the thing that viewers take away from this episode. Those scenes are more focused on discussing Gadreel and the angels. Whether these discussions will help the brothers or pull them further apart, I have no idea.

All in all, I liked the episode. It certainly wasn't my favourite episode this season, but for what it was, it was good.

Reminds me a Skin from season 1
CubsandCulture21 September 2020
This is a one of the stronger episodes in the 9th season and I think a lot of that has to do with it being a throw back to early monster of the week procedurals the show use to do. And unlike a lot of these episodes this one manages to work in some allegory, metaphor around beauty standards (especially for women) and weight loss obsession pretty effortlessly. Donna is a good side character and she is really fun here. The influence of Fargo is present; there's a quirkiness to this episode that is lacking in the later season. Oh and the "fish taco" is a memorable monster.

Entertaining ep and finally a unique monster
shwetafabm30 June 2020
The ep was enjoyable We had some angst but also some typical winchester brother moments I liked what Sam said about Dean, he has been in the wrong since he sold his soul in S2, that's just too much.

The Sam-Dean Conundrum
insideout0985 February 2014
The troubling relationship between Sam and Dean is beginning to overshadow everything else. Fundamentally, the writers have set up a no-win situation where the brothers have completely different value systems, making their issues impossible to reconcile. Frankly, Sam is coming across as whiny and self-righteous. Suggesting, as he does, that Dean should have allowed him to die instead of saving him "for purely personal reasons" really put me off. Dean saved him NOT because he didn't want "to be alone," as Sam states, but because it's what Dean does: Saves people who are close to him. The fact that Sam wouldn't do the same sets up an impossible quandary. At what point are you guys going to give Sam the insight to understand and appreciate what it means to love a family member so much that you would do anything to save them? What? Are you trying to make the argument that Dean is narcissistic and that losing his brother is like losing a prized possession? Give it up and get Sam back on board.

Solid episode!

Warning: Spoilers
Really good stand alone monster of the week episode! Plenty of funny one liners, side characters and jabs between the brothers, and a unique monster we haven't seen before, who you can actually sympathise with! The tension between Sam and Dean is still pretty heavy, but it doesn't override the whole episode and theres still plenty of room left for fun. And it has to be said, Sam in his yoga instructor outfit? Yeah, it's a good look. Season 9 rhymes with season fine for a reason lol. Overall this is one of the better stand alone episodes of this season, and our first introduction to Donna! Love that lady.

Sam has always been mean spirited
readonly-2620420 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The ending was heartbreaking but not surprising since Sam has always been self-righteous and forgets his own mistakes. And loves to put Dean down.

Great performances by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.

Oofta!
zopusha5 February 2014
I love this show, but when they do episodes that supposedly take place in Mn irritates the lists out of me! We don't sound Canadian (I know it's filmed there), we don't say "yeah, you bet'cha" and we don't seem like common idiots. Only people here who sound like that are waaaaayyyy up north and not in Stillwater, Blue Earth or anywhere south if Duluth. So please do better next Mn episodes and stop with all the stereotypes. Good episode tho' keep the good work! Try and work in some landmarks, not just Mn episodes all episodes where they "travel to". I can't imagine it be that hard to find some vids of some of the more popular places they go to. Ninth season and going strong. Just make Sam a lil less whiny and self righteous.

One of the weaker episodes of the season. I didn't like the tension between Sam and dean. The monster of the week was lame and the in your face commentary on weight/size was unnecessary. However, I did like Donna.

Gross.
danajs2413 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very gross episode. The animation for the fat suckers was repulsive, and the act of sucking fat from people was equally awful. Still haven't gotten back to the main story line unfortunately, and this had better be the last of the side story arcs before they head back. Sam is of course being moody and whiney towards Dean, who seems to be getting angrier and angrier with him for it. I did feel bad for the owners of the spa, but really hated the sheriff in it. Hopefully this sheriff isn't like a Jodie Mills character that recurs, and is only in this episode and done. And I know she wasn't in this, but I'm not a fan of Jodie Mills either for the record.

Troubled Over Sam and Dean
galet095 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Being a big fan of Supernatural for the past 6 months, I've seen all the episodes of every season and enjoy watching them over and over again. I mean there are so many how can one ever get bored by the reruns? I would give this episode like 4 out of 10 stars tho. I felt saddened by the trouble and issues between the brothers.

On the one hand, Dean would do almost anything for his brother, but it doesn't seem as if Sam feels the same way. I used to believe they had a deep emotional bond, and loved one another unconditionally and that family was everything to them, even though they rarely use the L word between the two to describe their own feelings.

When Sam said he wouldn't have done the same for Dean if the situation was reversed that made me very sad and a bit confused. I don't understand the writing and why the writer would be putting this kind of angst in between the two. It doesn't make sense to me.

As for the other stuff in the plot, it was interesting. And I was quite relieved to see Sam talk some sense into Dean, as far as NOT killing Maritza. I didn't feel she did anything truly wrong morally speaking, and should not have been taken out. It was good that Dean was able to see reason.

I really hope the relationship between Sam and Dean improves and goes back to a loving one, without so much friction.

I also hope there is going to be a Season 10. I really don't get into much t.v. at all, and I truly enjoy this series so much. This is one of the best series regarding supernatural stuff on t.v. Mostly because of the incredibly clever and awesome writing. I love this series!

Stop with the "Fargo" accent already!
faith-127-4089128 October 2014
I love this show. Love it. But I've been to Stillwater, MN and no one has a ridiculous accent like that. I'm getting really tired of hearing that damn accent, which is only mildly present in UPPER Minnesota. The "Iron Range" if you will. So just STOP already.

I'm a bit tired of Sam and Dean constantly being at odds with each other. I think the best episodes are the ones where they are working together and aren't estranged.

Otherwise this season has been great and I'm really looking forward to the next one, but first I have to get through this episode with the awful accent.

Sam's heart surgically removed ?
rich-fouts28 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure what the intent was of this episode's ending when Sam clearly indicates he does not have Dean's back which has always been one of their irrefutable laws. How is Dean supposed to work with him in life threatening situations after having said thar? I realize I am oversimplifying it, because Sam was referring to a different type of situation where choosing between Dean's life and the lives of multiple others is more mathematically significant than saving a family member. Though I understand where Sam is coming from it really didn't feel right to see how this episode concluded. Fans of the show clearly didn't like it either
