Jordan Peele Challenges Golden Globes Classifying ‘Get Out’ As a Comedy: ‘What Are You Laughing At?’
Before he directed “Get Out,” Jordan Peele was best known as a comedy figure, one half of the famed “Key & Peele” duo. His first feature transformed Peele’s reputation: As “Get Out” grossed over $250 million worldwide, Peele became known first and foremost as a filmmaker, with his racially-tinged story about rich white people who keep black people under mind control striking audiences as both outrageous and eerily familiar. No matter the absurd premise, “Get Out” explores the paranoia and victimization of the African American experience with palpable suspense and ideas that go well beyond the realm of punchlines.
Nevertheless, as the movie careens through awards season, Golden Globes voters will be considering “Get Out” in the Best Musical or Comedy category, not for Best Drama. This outcome has prompted plenty of online backlash, and a tweet from Peele calling the movie a documentary, acknowledging the limitations of those categories.

Last weekend, Jordan Peele delivered the Keynote address at the Film Independent Forum. In an hour long conversation with film critic Elvis Mitchell, the sketch comedian-turned-director talked openly about what he learned during his eight-year journey of conceiving, writing and filming his directorial debut, “Get Out” – the breakout horror film that tackles the issues of race and has become not only one the year’s biggest box-office success stories, but finds itself in the midst of the awards conversation.

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the movie “Get Out.”
When “Get Out” premiered in a secret midnight slot at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, nobody could have predicted it would become a cultural phenomenon. The $4.5 million Blumhouse production was billed as a satiric horror movie about race, directed by former “Key & Peele” sketch comedian Jordan Peele in his feature-length debut, and a cursory reading of those details suggested a wacky spoof of the “Scary Movie” variety.
Instead, Peele had made a genre-defying look at race relations in America, merging the interracial dynamics of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” with an outrageous B-movie premise worthy of George Romero. That premise — which finds wealthy white liberals using hypnosis and brain surgery to turn black people into their slaves — skewered the notion of a post-racial America from multiple directions at once, setting aside more obvious targets to unearth some of the worst...

When “Get Out” crossed $100 million a couple weeks ago, Jordan Peele became the first African-American writer-director to have a debut film surpass the mark at the box office. Flash forward a couple weeks and “Get Out” now stands at a remarkable $156 million, which means Peele has earned yet another record.

For the second time this year, a Blumhouse Production tops the Top Ten, as “Get Out” (Universal) scored $30 million this weekend, which is six times its production cost. The tremendous success of “Get Out” on Oscar weekend is significant for two reasons.
Oscar weekend box office often provides an ironic counterpoint to mainstream box office. This year, though, is a little different. For one thing, three of the Best Picture nominees (“Hidden Figures,” “La La Land” and “Lion”) are in the Top Ten, while three other Best Picture nominees are in the Top 20, despite being at the end of long runs.

In his latest parody, James Corden spoofs the boy band phenomenon that was so overwhelmingly popular in the 90s and 2000s. A mockumentary, which aired on Thursday on “The Late Late Show,” follows the rise and fall of the (fake) band Thr33way. For this, Corden enlisted some help from comedians Jordan Peele and Nick Kroll. Years before Pietro Bartolo became the star of an Oscar-nominated documentary, he nearly drowned at sea. Bartolo began his career as a fisherman, trawling the same Mediterranean waters between Italy and Libya where countless rickety boats carrying desperate immigrants sink beneath the waves. One day, the rough waters capsized his boat. He spent the night adrift and was rescued by a passing ship the next day.
“I was convinced I was going to die,” he said in a conversation through a translator during a recent visit to New York. “Finding a shipwrecked victim in the middle of the Mediterranean is like finding a needle in a haystack. I was lucky, but many of these people don’t have that same fortune.”

Warning: What you’re about to read is something of a Cinderella story.
Matt Spicer had only a couple of shorts under his belt, but when he sent his “Ingrid Goes West” screenplay to his agent, he got a call saying Aubrey Plaza wanted to play the lead — and then, Plaza was such a fan that she helped wrangle co-stars Elizabeth Olsen and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Things went so smoothly, production began just eight months after Spicer sent his agent the script.
And that’s when the trouble started.
The filmmakers lost a full day of shooting after a Santa Clarita wildfire destroyed one of their sets, while a plumbing problem at another location turned a house into a biohazard. Spicer also accidentally walked through a glass door, miraculously escaping with just a single two-inch gash on his arm.

It took a while, but Kumail Nanjiani has worked his way into popular culture with a combination of sincerity and snarky charm. Even as he made his name in standup comedy and memorable television roles (most recently on “Silicon Valley”), he found acclaim for his one-man shows, which dig through his struggles as a Pakistani-American at odds with his traditional upbringing.
Now comes “The Big Sick,” which funnels the two sides of his career into a genuine crowdpleaser that juggles humor and pathos through a personal lens. Co-written with wife Emily V. Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan, who acts opposite Nanjiani as himself), the movie turns their bumpy courtship into a portrait of resilience that operates on both charm and depth.
“The Big Sick” is directed by Michael Showalter, whose “Hello, My Name is Doris” was a genial tale of midlife vigor that now plays like a calling card for this bigger canvas.

The journey to Sundance is an all-consuming endeavor and most filmmakers don’t lift their heads until they land in Park City with their Dcp in hand.

A good magician never reveals their secret, but in today’s international trailer for action sequel Now You See Me 2, it is the elusive Four Horsemen that find themselves on the back foot after being duped by Daniel Radcliffe’s conniving mastermind.
Returning to the stage after a year spent in hiding, our band of tricksters go in expecting a triumphant encore, though Radcliffe’s Walter Mabry puts paid to those romantic plans. Son to Michael Caine’s wise old Arthur Tressler, Mabry soon becomes the one pulling the strings of the Four Horsemen, orchestrating their most daring heist yet from the shadows.
Lionsgate’s magic sequel brings together Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Lizzy Caplan – hopping into the shoes left vacant by Isla Fisher. Whether the casting switch will be explained in the plot, or brushed over in the vein of Don Cheadle supplanting Terrence Howard in the McU,...

Having dusted themselves off from one crime caper, the elusive Four Horsemen are preparing to take the world by storm once more for Now You See Me 2.
Pegged for a primetime release in mid-June, Lionsgate’s band of illusionists – in keeping with their Robin Hood M.O. – emerge from hiding to stage a comeback act that plans to expose a power-mongering tech conglomerate. Pulling the strings behind their reappearance is newcomer Daniel Radcliffe, who steps into the shoes of tech prodigy Walter Mabry for Jon M. Chu’s caper thriller.
Radcliffe is among the stars featured in today’s gallery of character posters – arriving by way of EW, InStyle, Den of Geek and People – where the returning Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco star as the Four Horsemen. Replacing Isla Fisher for The Second Act is Lizzy Caplan, though it’s unclear as of yet if her joining...

After three years the “The Four Horsemen” return (minus one) for the second part of their magic act in the debut trailer for Now You See Me 2. I thought Now You See Me was pretty dumb but even so that dumb movie made $351.7 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, which is a whole […]

I thought Now You See Me was mostly fine, but I was annoyed by what I considered to be an excessive use of CGI in most of the magic tricks. Unfortunately, this brand new trailer for Now You See Me 2 looks like it's going all in on the CGI magic. It does have a solid cast, though, including returning actors Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine, along with new-to-this-franchise talent like Lizzy Caplan (whose character replaces Isla Fisher's) and Daniel Radcliffe, so maybe the sheer likability of this cast will be able to make up the CG tricks and illusions. I'm sure there were plenty of people who actually liked those illusions the first time around and don't share my complaint, and if they dug the first one, they'll probably dig this one as well. And don't forget: a third movie is already in development,...

Much like the deft illusionists that anchored the film, Now You See Me appeared out of nothing two years ago, conjuring up a box office total of $350 million worldwide. Such an impressive and indeed surprising haul was enough for Lionsgate to issue the vote of confidence for a follow-up, and we’re now on the verge of seeing that vision whisk its way into theaters.

While the sequel to the 2013's Now You See Me won't be hitting big screens until Summer 2016, a third movie is already on the cards. The sequel, called Now You See Me 2: The Second Act, will see Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco team up again (Isla Fisher won't be back) as The Four Horsemen, who are master illusionists and thieves all rolled into one. Jay Chou, Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe are also on board for the sequel and presumably much of the cast will return for a third outing. Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer was talking up the company's earning profile with a bunch of analysts and announced the third outing. We have to be honest, we didn't see that one coming, but the original was throughly enjoyable and as long as they don't tinker with the successful formula too much, then bring it on!

Now You See Me 2 isn't due until next year - but plans are afoot for Now You See Me 3...
Lionsgate has high hopes for its 2016 sequel, Now You See Me 2, which it hopes will build on the $350m gross for 2013's surprise hit. The sequel has added Daniel Radcliffe to its cast (which also includes returnees Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco), although Isla Fisher's pregnancy means she's missing from episode two.
But there's a sporting chance her Now You See Me days are not over. Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer has revealed that the firm is already in the early planning stages for Now You See Me 3, and Fisher may well thus return in that way.
The second film, Now You See Me: The Second Act, is currently due for release in June 2016, with Jon M Chu taking over directing duties from Louis Leterrier.

The surprise success of the first stage-magicians-pulling-a-heist thriller Now You See Me naturally led to the greenlight for a second film, which is a year away from release. But Lionsgate is apparently already so confident in the sequel that it has announced that a third film is in development. Speaking in the context of a less-than-sexy call with analysts to talk up the company’s earning profile, Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer announced that he and his team were already planning a third outing, which will surely end up being called Now You See Three, unless they don’t like laughter or fun.The original, which saw Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco as performers The Four Horsemen recruited for a series of daring robberies with an ulterior motive, took in less than $30 million on its opening weekend, but eventually made more than $351 million worldwide. The sequel, called...

From humble sleeper hit to bona fide series, the story behind Lionsgate’s Now You See Me franchise has been one riddled with success, and even though The Second Act isn’t set to slink into theaters until 2016, the studio has went one step further to greenlight a third installment in the crime caper franchise.
Speaking at an earnings call earlier today, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that the studio has entered the “early planning” stage in relation to the threequel, and a Now You See Me 3 dovetails with the company’s plan to double down on bankable franchises. Back in 2013, the original movie pulled in an impressive $350 million at the worldwide box office off the back of a $75 million budget, and Lionsgate will be hoping to increase this profit margin moving forward.

Anyone with even a passing interest in magic will tell you that the first rule of being a magician is to never reveal your secrets. Well, thankfully for us, Now You See Me had Avengers star Mark Ruffalo assume the role of a federal agent pursuing the devious Four Horsemen, meaning that he was able to speak freely about the sleight of hand at play within upcoming sequel, Now You See Me: The Second Act.
During an interview with Collider while promoting Marvel’s latest superhero adventure, the actor revealed that he has completed his part in Jon M. After a surprise turnover at the box office back in 2013, the Four Horsemen are set to return for another bout of might and magic with the release of Now You See Me: The Second Act, and director Jon. M Chu recently showcased our very first look at the ensemble cast for the upcoming sequel.
With Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzy Caplan — in lieu of Isla Fisher — on board as the aforementioned tricksters, the film will also herald the return of Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine, who will be joined by newcomer Daniel Radcliffe who is set to play his son, Walter Tressler. As for story, The Second Act will pick up around one year after the events of the original film, pitting the Horsemen against a new threat as they make a move to pull of their “most dangerous heist yet.”
Not exactly reinventing the wheel, mind you.

Over the past few months, we’ve heard some pretty awful proposed titles for Now You See Me 2, Summit’s announced sequel to the 2013 magician caper, including (believe it or not) Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Luckily, the filmmakers chose to go with a different tactic when subtitling the follow-up, as Mark Ruffalo has just revealed that the full title is Now You See Me: The Second Act.
Hardly the catchiest title, I know, but it does remind us that the sequel will continue to set up the larger universe merely teased in the first installment. In The Second Act, three of the Four Horsemen (Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Jesse Eisenberg – Isla Fisher opted not to return) are drawn out of hiding to face a new enemy, who enlists them for a dangerous heist.
