Great episode!
Shane318225 February 2014
Captives was written by Robert Berens, the same person who wrote the episode Heaven Can't Wait, and since I thoroughly enjoyed Heaven Can't Wait, I had high expectations for this episode, and it did not disappoint.

This episode has a lot going on. In the very beginning of the episode, we have Sam and Dean in the Men of Letters bunker; the lights begin to flicker and cups start exploding, so the boys quickly come to the conclusion that it is haunted. The remainder of their time in the episode is dealing with this ghost. On the other hand, we have Castiel on his own in this episode, who, while confronting an angel, is then approached by a set of new angels that work for Bartholomew.

Thank god we are finally progressing! I have spent the last several episodes frustrated by the lack of development going on both with the story and the characters. We finally have Bartholomew, an angel who is in charge of leading a large faction of angels, appear and confront Castiel. I wasn't sure what to expect of their meeting, but I was pleasantly surprised by how it turned out.

Captives ended up being quite an emotional roller-coaster, with some very touching scenes for the brothers and some cool fighting for Castiel. The pacing was very good, nothing felt rushed or horribly drawn out; it was very well written. I definitely think Robert Berens should write more episodes in the future.

Thank You Kevin and Thank You Castiel!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Further to one of the User Reviewer commenting on Kevin giving Sam & Dean advice on their in-fighting....he's right, the writers need to let up on this type of dialogue. Sam & Dean were created to work together and not fighting each other for it's counterproductive. Also I'm soooo glad that Castiel is really back as the moral and humbly Angel and proved in the last scene that he was in. He is portraying the Angel that THE CREATOR made him to be!

Warning: Spoilers
Yuck, Kevin came back. This had better be the real end of him. The biggest problem I had with this episode was when Sam and Dean were like "oh no demon you have way worse coming than Crowley," and then Mrs. Tran walks in and kills the demon immediately. Um I think Crowley would have done a little worse to him than killing him instantly and without any torture. He tortures all his friends remember? Cas kills Bart, and it seemed incredibly easy. Is this stolen grace even affecting him at all? I'd expect Cas to be slowing down or something by now. Also I still struggle believing Cas is some combat bamf. Just not buying it. In angel terms he seems to be like a dumb jock? I'm buying that even less.

Ugh. Narrative weight.

As a conclusion (at least for several years) of Kevin's story this is a cromulent episode. It has just what you want to see in the Tran's story and the character beats are nice. I also think the lackey demon is just different enough to be more than a henchmen that helps keeps the episode fresh. But at the end of the day this is another episode that exists only to complete a checklist on the season arch and it has no identity apart from that. It is yet another episode that feels like it is treading water.

Thank you Kevin, no thank you Sam

Warning: Spoilers
Thank you Kevin, for saying what I think everyone of us is thinking at this point; No more bro on bro drama please, it's stupid, and frankly we've had enough. It's the same thing season after season, one did something bad, and the other is holding it over his head! In this case it's Sam who's being childish, blaming Dean for "talking (him) out of boarding up hell". Newsflash Sam, you chose that path, nobody did it for you. It's getting sooo tedious to watch the petty infighting, and it doesn't even hold op from a character arc point of view. Yes, in the first few seasons it was kinda their style, blaming each other for letting the other one down, but man both brothers have messed up so many times now, it's ridiculous to keep blaming each other. I realise now that I'm adressing two fictional characters, when in fact I should be adressing the writers, so dear SPN writers; please stop it, it's stupid!

I had to get that off my chest, since all of that is overshadowing an otherwise pretty great episode! There's action, drama (the good kind), and the pacifist Castiel plot is awesome! I would probably rate this a 8 or 9 if it wasn't for the ending! Please get the brothers to realize they need each other, and they need to forgive each other! 6/10

Warning: Spoilers
I dislike the whole Angel thing when its too much, only in small doses is it fun Also maybe its the binge Watching but i remember what Castiel did 3 seasons ago enough to know this is nonsense Spn was never angel politics and while an interesting concept i don't like watching half of it devoted to bart and Castiel having a lame match I don't hate Castiel just his storyline basically. Yup this is where i stopped watching spn, its not the best season, 7 was better Seeing Kevin was great. I'm not one of those people who can't stomach deaths of Kevin and Bobby just because they are dead, i think there wasn't much more that could have been done with the character so as much as i liked him that was a good choice. I liked seeing the mom too but that part too plain, not that great Our characters are also dumbed down again
