Warning: Spoilers
This was a really weird time to throw in Cas' base of operations. Seems like it went up overnight, and torn down in this episode. Also, these angels are really finnicky. If Metatron does fall to Cas in the next episode, I'm sure Cas will be a hero again, and they'll all follow him. Getting a bit annoying. The angel bomb stuff is pretty cool, I hope they use it sporadically in the show to come, but I'm afraid it could get overused pretty quickly too. I just had a thought. What happens if they do the angel ousting spell sending them back to heaven? Could they infiltrate heaven that way? Or would just nothing happen since it's mostly closed? Maybe they'll use it as a means to invade next episode.

Dean killed it

Warning: Spoilers
When Dean said to Sam "Look, until I jam that blade through that douche bag's heart, we are not a team. This is a dictatorship. Now, you don't have to like it, but that's how it's gonna be." he killed it, he finally started relying on himself and stopped worrying about constant-whining Sam, he needed to stop giving that kid the attention.

Overall great episode and fantastic season!

Metatron is the redeeming thing here

Warning: Spoilers
His plan was great. But idk why the writers made that cringey quest thing. And did they really need to do Tessa like this. The interaction between her and Dean seemed so weird, like these characters don't have a history. Why bring back a great character that helped Dean in S4 and was good in S6 to destroy so senselessly not to forgot the strange rules of repears. Are all repears now possessing people, now can't go invisible? Not that has any thing do with the fall because that one reaper was visible in S8. Ugh. Why. Also why are the rest of the angels so weird and weak against a human.

Good

This was a good episode overall. The only major problem I had with it was how they handled the angels. I also thought it was odd that they brought Tessa back only to have her commit suicide. The ending was great.

Built on several lazy cheats
CubsandCulture21 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is among the weakest penultimate episodes in the show's run and the writers repeatedly cheat to get the characters into position they need them to be. The worst one is Tessa being explicitly an angel *and* being visible to non-dying people; this is against 8 years worth of material on reapers. It makes no sense within the mythos. The writers needed a disposable character that Dean had a connection with for the plotting and found Tessa the best fit for other reasons. But a better thought out script could have done this same plotting with a new character that didn't muck about in the already murky mythology.

If it was just the Tessa thing I could have look it but the script is so bad in its coincidence the entire hour rings false and forced. It is only the bare minimum of what need to be done.

Stale story, but strong characters.
mm-3915 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Stairway to Heaven is reflective of the entire 9th season, so far. Stale story, but strong characters. Another war among the angels is becoming a tiresome main story. No one really cares what happens to the bad guys this season. I just want the story to end. Another Winchester affliction, sub story, is getting old! However, I wonder what will become of Dean! The Sam, Dean, and Castiel characters are interesting, but the series is running out of ideas. I hope the season ending has a plot twist, which energizes the viewer. Maybe, an appearance of a new bad guy . Where is Dick Roman, the series needs more charisma. Nothing new in the Stairway to Heaven episode. A just is episode. Six out of ten!

Epic ending
blackmagpie-6236827 May 2018
What a pity they chose to make the angels fall to such levels. The early seasons of this show the angels where absolutely amazing, strong, powerful majestic beings and they have fallen to disloyal, petty, weak, cowards. They change loyalty like underwear and deserve everything they get. But OMG what an epic closing scene. At last. Loved it.
