Love is all you need
raj04049211 October 2013
Though our FB status might say otherwise, most of our relationships today are complicated and according to Atlee the most complicated relationship of all time is Marriage. Hence, in his maiden venture, he has attempted to unwind the knot of all knots and to a great extent has succeeded too.

Raja Rani, a story based on the lives of four individuals and how the ripples they create end up canceling each other. What begins as a Catholic style marriage soon shifts to an apartment with the couples bickering at each other with the utmost fury like the lions and the Gladiators. But deep inside, both present a flashback with love as a common link. Who succeeds, Love or The lovers or the couples? You know what to do to know the answer.

Atlee, the débutante deserves appreciation for several reasons, for choosing a script free from heroism and Newton defying action sequences, for choosing a strong cast (Who would have imagined the Lungi clad villain of Naan Kadavul in a Reid & Taylor with a funny bone), for using these casts to deliver the message in almost every scene without making a fuzz about it.

Arya, Nayanthara, Jai, Nazriya have successfully brought life to the characters. The supporting cast including Santhanam, Sathyaraj, 'Naan Kadavul' Rajender have also done justice to their roles. Arya has retained his lover boy image with Santhanam as his side kick. Jai has ensured that we don't miss Santhanam in the first half. Nazriya's potential glimmers and with that enchanting look, she is definitely here to stay. Nayanthara's fasting with Tamil cinema is finally over and one hopes that she continues to entertain in the coming years. Santhanam has proved his mettle once again. Sathyaraj bring tears and at the same time helps us wipe it off.

The complications of any relationship can be easily dealt with once we realize that is complicated. 'Misunderstanding' can cause greater mayhem than what Katrina did to US. A clean mind and a willing heart is all it takes to make any relationship work. Though Atlee sprinkled many advice throughout, one refuses to leave my hearing apparatus and I've translated it to my best, "No couple are born in this world as 'made for each other'. It's how you live that makes it meaningful"

Raja Rani--- Telltale Poetry

Must watch for all Newlyweds and those awaiting.

A Cool Breezy Entertainer
aji4u4ever3 October 2013
A cool breezy entertainer. Director Atlee made an awesome entry in Kollywood with this brilliant movie. though the wine is old, but the package was promising. I enjoyed a lot. All credits goes to this young director to make this movie a memorable one. The casting was extra ordinary: Arya, Nayanthara, Jai, Nazriya, Sathyan and Sathyaraj. Nayanthara was ravishing, Nazriya looked as short cutie, Jai was good and Arya was the correct fit for that character. Nayanthara's performance was extraordinary, well i wud say, she returned to Kollywood with a BANG!!!! Sathyaraj's father character was good, he performed well.. Though Santhanam was playing the comedy part, but also he did a wonderful character in serious role. Music was enjoyable and the BGM was extremely blended with the movie. Kudos to GVP. Raja Rani was the perfect family entertainer with the correct mixture of Comedy, Romance, Sentiments & Music. One of the best romantic movies around. Don't wait for the DVD or the pirated copy, try to watch it in the theater itself.

Very touching movie
mj-bharathreddy23 May 2015
I and my wife were feeling bored and went to see this movie in Shanti theater, Hyderabad.

Initially we thought this is a regular movie.

The starting scene with heart touching music welcomes you to the movie rather nicely.

Thereafter every scene is like a fresh scene. I am glued to my seat waiting to see what will happen next.

Then there are many scenes in the movie that produced tears in our eyes.

Every scene was nicely presented with awesome music.

There is right blend of humor as well.

Nayanatara has produced one of the best acting. It is rare to see a good role being played by female in a south Indian movie.

OVerall simply vow, what a surprise, really heart touching movie. Redefines what love is all about.

There is life after love, there is love after marriage.

Raja Rani - A glimpses of love.
karthikaggressivefilmmak27 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Arya - After huge flop of Settai he is back with RR,He has done a good job,and he is very impressive too.He has done full justice to his respective role and chemistry between Nazriya(in past)was cute and bit emotional too,and between Nayantara(in present) seems to be less chemistry. On the whole another superb hit for him.

Jai - A great comeback film for Jai,his character was a kind of an innocent,soft-spoken and purely performance oriented character. After Engaeyum Eppothum in this film his role was very important, In 1st half his part was very enjoyable he shines throughout in first half.On the whole his performance was very matured and once again i am mentioning that for Jai it's a great comeback film.

Nayantara - After a sabbatical of 3 years (her last movie in Tamil was (Boss Engira Bhaskaran) she is back in Kollywood with strong comeback,When am watching her on screen was just went back 3 years same year VTV movie was released in that Trisha role was talk of the town not only that her role was very intense, here am not comparing Trisha & Nayantara thing is as same both roles were had a great impact to the story.Coming to RR undoubtedly she has chosen best movie for her strong comeback she has done a great job chemistry between Jai & Arya was very cool ! Not only in love portions,in emotional portions also she deserves an applause. She herself mentioned her role in daily newspaper"very stubborn. She loses her temper at the drop of a hat, but is also emotionally vulnerable. What I like the most about her is the way she handles each and every phase in her life" was 100%correct. On the whole she completely justifies her role.

Nazriya Nazim - Latest heartthrob of many youngsters, she made her impressive debut in Neram. In this her cute and childish expressions was very neat. She does not have a strong role to execute her way to go Nazriya.

Sathyaraj - After being great supportive role in Nanban,Thalaivaa &Vvs,in this film he is not exceptional portrayed well in this,he is very calm and cool father his character was well sketched am sure that present-day girls would love to have such a father.

Santhanam - He is in as usual but not wholly, he is having an integral to play in the story. His performance in emotional scenes was very refreshing. As usual his one liners are very catchy, Arya and Santhanam share some lighter moments together,Mostly in second half he keeps us engaging.

Rest characters like Sathyan & others have done a good job.

Tech crews : Cinematography by George.c.Williams - His work was very flawless, whole film has rich & glossy look in songs "Chillena" & "Oday Oday" visually outstanding. Editing by Anthony L. Ruben - He has done a great job,but he could have been trimmed few portions. Music by G.V.Prakash - Already songs have become huge hit,Not only in songs he has done a great job in BGM too because there are few Impactful scenes so he has worked a lot in it. Director Atlee - First and foremost a warm welcome to him.So, here another short filmmaker turned as full-fledge filmmaker, he has earlier worked as an asst with director Shankar sir in Endhiran & Nanban. When doing his UG he has done a few notable short films with actor Sivakarthikeyan in his short films worth mention will be Mugaputhagam.Coming to RR he was very clear in his vision that what he wants to convey and how he wants to,story was very simple but the way he handled screenplay was very engaging,he has made audience with the complete package of comedy, love & bit emotions too.On the whole 2013 has got another wonderful & promising filmmaker.Way to go bro !.

Conclusion - Raja Rani resembles yesteryear film Mounaragam which made a memorable film in Tamil cinema history even today if we watch will feel as fresh.Coming to Raja Rani a Debutant director has handled an ensemble cast in this film which features mostly well known faces,Really we should appreciate director for giving a wonderful message oriented film, above have to say means he has just made wake up all new married couples,If we watch this movie in deeply means central theme of the story is very intense but he has executed in a engaging way, Some people may think after watching teaser & trailer in that tag line was attached i.e. "There is Life after Love Failure,There is Love after Love failure" whether it will be preachy or advisable if you are having this thought in your mind means, Am sure that RR will change this kind of thought in your mind after watching this film not only that it will show us clear vision too especially for married couples.Despite all odds all kind of audiences can enjoy a lot with whole family.

In a word or sentence have to say means: Raja Rani - A feel good film with all elements & Must watch for family audience.

Atlee Kumar - Hats - off bro ! for giving us feel good movie after many days all the best for your future projects

Bueautiful love story(s)
sivakumar-1605906 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The story of "Raja Rani" is: John(Arya) and Regina(Nayanthara) get married but they are both not happy about getting married. There is friction between them which is first shown funny but later get serous slowly they get to know each others past,Regina's love with Surya(Jai) and John's love with Keerthana(Nazriya) are shown. How the couple comes in terms with life and moves on is the story.

All three love stories are very different and are beautiful in their own way. The movie shows some great acting by all the characters. The characters done by Nazriya,Santhanam, the friends of Regina in office and college are all well created and acted.

The movie is heavily inspired by "Mouna Raagam" but in a good way. Two minuses I found were the song were not that memorable. And the climax was stretched a bit more than necessary.

The movie tells that there is life after love and Love after marriage and is convincing in it.

Good One
velagachaitanya25822 March 2014
Excellent one from Director. Useful to youth who suicide after love failure. Good sentimental movie. Family Entertainer . All the Actors did their part well int the movie.

The first half is about the love story of the Heroine and the second half is about the love story of hero. Director maintained good suspense all over movie without feeling bore.

Cast - Arya,Jai,Nayanathra,Nazriya Nazim, Santhanam,Sathyaraj,Rajendran and many more.

The story begins with John (Arya) and Regina (Nayanthara) getting married at a church. John and Regina have agreed to get married just to make their parents happy. When they take their wedding vows Regina utters her lover's name 'Surya.' Upon hearing this,Regina's father faints in the church. Regina feels sorry for her father and ends up marrying John. They live in a flat and John comes home every night drunk deliberately to disturb Regina. Their neighbors are also annoyed by this attitude of John and chides Regina one morning when this nuisance gets worse. They also try to irritate each other in every possible way. Eventually, Regina applies for transfer to stay away from John and he is not affected by this decision.

RAJA RANI- Perfect Movie with right mix of flavors
jayavishnukumar27 September 2013
AR Muruhadoss production, Atlee's direction,GV Prakash Kumar's music wow everything is simply superb. Arya,Jai,Nayantara,Nazriya each and everyone scores full on their performance.. After a long time a movie for all genres not just college students, also for families.. There is Love after Love A life after love nice message well executed...

Sathyaraj as Nayantara's father was is a modern and darling Papa who fulfills all her daughter's wishes, while Santhanam a "Nanbaenda" of Arya this time not just makes funny one liners but also says touching dialogs.. "Nan Kadavul"Rajendran,Sathyan etc., also did their job well..

George. C. Williams's Cinematography is a perfect blend of class and romance in a colorful and emotional mood with perfect captures.. Anthony L. Ruben is not to be blamed..

There are very few drags but thats alright..

ATLEE has given a superb movie and it is gonna be one of the biggest hits of 2013 both critically as well as commercially...

GV prakash music songs are blossoming and background music is melting.. Only the beats used for the funny track is exactly lifted from "Polladhavan".. Oday Odey song is a peppy romantic dance roller coaster while "Imaye Imaye" is a sad climax song with emotions...

Arya is just Awesome, his dialog delivery and actions are impressive.. Jai is amazing and funny dialogs were ROFL in this movie

Nazriya was very active in acting and bubbly too.. Nayantara after a long time did an excellent performance ESP in the scene where she cries.. excellent..

overall RAJARANI is a lovely movie that stands unique in presentation, though not a great or a new journer it is surely set to leave the cinema hall with a smile and some thoughts...

RAJA RANI- LETS MAKE WAY FOR THE KING AND QUEEN

A Decent Romantic Emotional Mixbag
chandru-chendur28 September 2013
The movie was well shot and beautifully presented... this flick is more like a real life coz there's no evil villain who drives other people crazy with his psychologically disordered behavior...! Surprisingly the choreography and soundtracks were great.... but the BGM sux (same ra... ra...) I think screenplay is the backbone of this film... Atlee has done a fabulous work which turned an ordinary story into watchable film!!! All the characters done a fair job to do not disappoint their director's expectations...! The trailers have been released so far are nothing to do with this film's storyline... coz that's what they wanted, they wanted to confuse us and do not get the story visual. well... they succeeded with me. the hype for this film was worth!!!

Raja Rani (U) - The Way to Go With Life !
meena19992316 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Director Atlee should be praised for his initiative to put up a story with explaining the practical way of life.It is really one of of the best films I have ever awaited to watch.Though the dialogs are touching and thought provoking,he could have really avoided the epilepsy attack and Arya friend dialog saying "Ponnunga Vittu Koduthutu Polena Pasanga Thuttu Kuduthutu Poiduvanga" .I am really trying to voice out my views since I really felt involved with the story.

It is actually a mind blowing effort by young director Atlee. My rating would be actually 10 but since I felt as the director was unmarried and male he has not thoroughly analyzed the other side of the coin from a woman's feeling and has gone by men's view and experiences gathered from hearsay by male gender only. Please show the real problem in life with little commercial story. At least we see in movies the couple is united and we come out of theater happily unlike in reality where the husband will file for a divorce or be Doubting Thomas once his wife opens up her past love story.

How I wish Atlee could have brought mother in law problem for Nayanthara instead of she crying too much. After marriage a girl cannot simply cry just sharing the same bed without consummation. Her man would have created havoc on the first night itself.Since in real life the husband creates problem after consummation and sex, then he says he wants a divorce.Director Atlee in many of his interviews said that his inspiration for the story is the increasing number of divorces rate. There are a few good hearted men,i understand but they are not the people who are affected.People who are suffering because of relationship problem are the audiences who need to be addressed.Though the overall output has come out very well with the Raja and Rani uniting and exchanging dialogs of their spouses Ex!

Will a girl working in software suffer from epilepsy fits and attack or will the husband be so generous and gracious enough to ignore her health problem. And also Nayanthara is shown shouting at Arya when he tries to pay her hospital bill.Actually the character Regina(Nayanthara) would have got a slap in reality from John(Arya). But the conclusion is very good that leaves most of the audiences coming out of the theater with the feeling as though they have united with their loved ones.

G.V Prakash has done full justice to romantic and emotional scenes and handled the songs very well.Hearing the song Hey Babe lyrics "Pona Ava Veetuku Athuku Thaane Vanthiruken Naanum Wine Shopukku" was really misleading making us to think of separation between husband and wife. The "brother" concept is really irritating since you cannot call brother and start loving, someone should have pointed what influence it will have in genuine cases. It hurts the feeling and weakens Nazriya's character. There is no depth chemistry between Arya and Nazriya. In the trailer we were shown Nazriya shouting "brother brother".But then she marries Arya.It is real nonsense.

I really missed the "Angnyaade" song which was rocking after the audio release.I was very much eager to watch the video on screen. It is really a family entertainer with a universal message for the husband and wife The Raja and The Rani!

Old wine in a refreshing new bottle.......and the old wine is tastier
SivakumarBalachandran30 September 2013
With lots of excitement I went to watch this movie in theatre(the day before its release in India!!). The expectation is may be due to so many reasons like Nayan's come back after boss, same set Nayan, Arya, Santhanam, attractive teasers on you tube, Good stardom in the movie. With all those weights I watched it and of course I should say I enjoyed it over all.

"Raja Rani" as for as the plot it is the same after marriage rehabilitation type recipe cooked with new ingredients. The teaser tells the story so nothing new (just like Mouna raagam or Silunu oru kadhal types) on that side but quite entertaining screenplay that will keep you engaged through out.

The movie can be watched with family since it has got good share of all elements sentiment, comedy, romance, suspense etc. All credits goes to the young debutant director "Atlee". Good work for a first movie.

Coming to the performances the lead roles Arya fits picture perfect and it is not a quite challenging role for him but did it well. Nayantara we could say it is a back with a bang after three years. She has done it well in terms of acting, chemistry with arya and Jai. But she has to definitely work on her physics (mean her size) since sometimes she seems to be aged for both lead men. Santhanam is not just the comedy spice here but has done a character role. Satyaraj has been seen in recent movies settling down in good character and support roles so as in this movie. Jai and Nazria Nazim plays the love interests of the leads in the flash back were good on their roles. The cliché is we see Jai's character is the same as his previous flick Engeyum Eppodhum. Nazria was short and cute. BGM in the title score was awesome. Music was OK. Cinematography was good. Costume design has to be mentioned so many times we think the leads are like modelling for brands. Particularly Arya who was a model turned actor. Get in for an entertaining Rom-Com of the year.

fun.. love.. emotions.. put together..
jaanuforug30 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Having seen many mixed reviews for Raja Rani, I loved to write one for myself for the first time.. One of the rarest Indian films in the recent past, which created a lot of hype before its release and lived up to its expectations. Its a correct mixture of entertaining and an emotional story well taken. Applauds to débutant Atlee and his team. Cinematography is fresh, visuals are fantastic and GV's background score is a plus for this romantic entertainer, although songs would not satisfy all types of audiences. I loved them personally though..

Casting plays a major role for this film and everyone has done their job well, especially Nayan n Jai's performances are mind blowing. Arya and Nazriya have limited scope but played their parts decently. Santhanam was as usual rocking but at places I felt he was not emotionally good. Satyaraj is one of the strong pillars of support in this film. Others like Satyan too are good.

When I saw this movie, I had no comparing thoughts with any other films during that time, May be when you come out and think a bit about the story line you might find a mouna ragam or a rhythm in it which is not bad, as all films if we think will have some resemblances to another which one cannot avoid easily.

There are flaws in this movie but its definitely worth a watch for a lot of emotionally crafted scenes; between Satyaraj n Nayan's, Father- Daughter sequences, Nayan n Jai's cat n dog fight ending in love, climax dialogues between Nayan n Arya reiterating their past, etc). And its also refreshing to see the characters portrayed differently from the usual gender biased ways, actress really taking the lead over the heroes of this film and most of the male characters seen crying too, Jai does it often..

Atlee scores a 90 in first half and a 50 in second half which makes it an average movie overall but could have been far better if he would have taken some time in writing the Arya-Nazriya script with realistic emotions and editor would have trimmed better in few places, 2 hrs n 45 mins is seriously too long for its second half. Also, he has left audiences to assume in different ways as to why Jai did not marry Nayan instead of conveying it in his own, which also raises question in people's mind. And most importantly there is not much space dedicated to the title characters together as most of the time was given to back to back flashback of individual love story line ups.

On the whole, Raja Rani's kingdom is built with some strong pillars and few holes here and there but will rule your hearts for sure with the message delivered throughout..

Good story, but in wrong hands.
eta-2177118 October 2017
Not a different story but had this been given to director like maniratnam the movie would have been perfect.

The movie lacks several things, most important is romance or the way how relationship is portrayed. Director is very bad at this.

1.people in a relationship like john-nayanthara wont sleep in the same bed, but director shows as if they sleep in the same bed.

2.next satyraj acts as a stupid father, like sending his daughter to argue with a policeman.

3. jai-nayan relationship is very fake. Jai is like a beta male dating a dominant female.

4. dialogues are lifeless mostly 5. Unnecessary crying/yelling scenes.

6. nazriya intro - new low 7. nazriya -arya romance another headache, arya acts like a moron and nazriya like 16 yr old girl.

8. Mottai rajendran flashback is the stupidest point of the film.

9. the film is 2.30hrs. If most of the crap is cut down the movie can be finished in 1 hr.

10. Climax -blah blah blah.

Music is good but someplaces they are unnecessary.

Overall a half baked movie from an inexperienced director who just shows his name in big fonts for some reason.

As others mentioned, its old wine in new bottle but I just loved it...
Midesag1 October 2013
When this movie was released, just like any other Tamil movies I was not at all interested to watch thinking this would be another love story without offering anything new. The very next day after the release of the movie, I heard fantastic reviews about it from my friends and as well as review websites. Finally I went to watch the movie the third day of the release and it was a joy to watch. Even made my eyes wet at some of the emotional scenes. If in live you have loved anyone or failed in love, you should watch this movie.. For those guys, this is a "must watch before you die" category movie. You will never regret spending your time and money for this movie. HatsOff to Nayantara, Arya, Jai and Nazriya for their wonderful performance. Also special mention to Santhanam, for his "Nanban" character which he portrays in most of his movies and I kinda like them very much cos friendship is such a thing. Also not to forget the director Atlee, for his lovable creation. Highly recommended...

_Thanks _MidhunJ

Warning: Spoilers
Boring, routine with no redeeming characteristics whatsoever, and in spite of my finding nothing to recommend it, it still isn't as bad as, say, 'Total Siyappa'. Having said that, I'm in a minority, since the audience I saw this with was guffawing away at mostly unlaughable jokes, or jokes that started and ended without the punchline.

The dubbing's atrocious, the songs perfunctory, Nayantara's makeup's as bad as always (though her acting chops make their appearance once in a while), Arya's acting is bad (albeit sincere, and it has been heading downhill since his fantastic performances in 'Arindhum Ariyaamalum' and 'Pattiyal') and Sathyaraj is under-used. Jai's the only one who comes out smelling like roses, and Nazriya Nazim (oh-so-fantastic in 'Ohm Shanthi Ohsaana') is probably the biggest disappointment of all (not her fault - the overrated director has denied her and her co-stars all semblance of characterization).

I just don't see any point in watching this, but people sure are. Make up your own mind.

There is LIFE after love failure, There is LOVE after love failure.
pantheraleomaximus2 July 2014
Raja Rani is an tamil Romantic - Comedy movie directed by debutante Atlee Kumar, who previously worked with Shankar as an assistant in Enthiran (2010) and produced by A. R. Murugadoss in association with Fox Star Studios. The film features Arya, Nayantara and Jai in the lead roles.

THE film delivers classy romance. a promising debut by ATLEE. CINEMATOGRAPHY is excellent. Arya is very good in the lead role. This character is tailor made for him. His performance in the flashback scenes is very impressive. Nayanatara's performance is flawless and she owns this show. There are many moments that show the brilliance of this young director. This film has Life in it! The film made by director Atli has been well-received by Tamil audience. Debutant director Atlee's highly hyped Raja Rani starts off promisingly and keeps us engaged. Performance by lead actors , music , concept are highlights of the film. Raja Rani has it all good looking stars, big budget, rich look, peppy music, technically glitzy. there are traces of Mani Ratnam classic Mouna Ragam. GV Prakash's music is definitely one of the highlights of the film. And cinematographer George C Williams camera is eye-catching with terrific visuals and colours. Two hours and forty five minutes have never felt longer. lead actors' performances are the main attractions in the film. Tamil film industry too has been adopting this pattern of multistarrer film.

It's difficult to say who'd walk with all the accolades and all the lead actors were perfect in their roles.

Good film for those who have had love failure, excellent performances by Nayantara and Nazriya
BollyReview21 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Raja Rani is a Tamil romantic drama starring Nayantara, Nazriya Nazim, Arya and Jai.

The film is about John (Arya) and Regina (Nayantara) who get married unwillingly to please their parents. Their married life is miserable and they don't even talk to each other. Every day, John comes home late and completely drunk. He creates a ruckus in the apartment and resumes watching TV with increasing volume to fade out the noise of Regina who cries every night next to him in bed. One night, Regina starts having a seizure next to John. John is drunk but eventually realizes that she is ill and calls an ambulance. In the hospital, John asks Regina if this has happened before. Regina says yes and starts telling him the story of her and Surya.

We then proceed into a series of flashbacks and current events. The first half of the film show us the love failure of Regina. The second half shows the love failure of John. Having gone through similar things, will Regina and John learn to move on and love each other?

I loved the first half of Raja Rani. The film starts out with the lines "There is life after love failure. There is love after love failure." I loved one of the earliest scenes in the film, when John and Regina are about to marry in the church. First the father asks John who first looks back at his friend and then hesitantly agrees to take Regina as his wife. When it's Regina's turn, she too turns back to her father first and then accidentally says "Surya" instead of John. She realizes her mistake, pauses. John suddenly smiles assuming that the wedding will now be off. Regina returns a few moments later and takes him as her husband, much to the surprise of John.

Raja Rani brought together two of the most talented actresses in the South today. Both Nayantara and Nazriya are great actresses and very beautiful and charming. It's unfortunate that the actors in the cast did not match their caliber. I have not seen any other films of Arya and Jai but of what I have seen of them in Raja Rani, they're only average in the acting department. They did okay but Nayantara and Nazirya definitely took the spotlight throughout the film. Both actresses were wonderful. Next to Nayantara, Arya fell a little short in emoting. As for Jai, I could not get past his awful voice which sounded like someone was grinding stones. I wish they had someone dub for him because I did not mind his performance otherwise. It's a whole different story how they made his character cry at the drop of a hat though. I hadn't seen a man cry so much in a film before.

As entertaining as Raja Rani was in the first half, the film seemed to drag on in the second half. The friction between John and Regina went on for too long and the ending was unsatisfying. I was expecting a more emotional and thorough ending. I was also a little annoyed with a repetitive dialogue in the film. It was something along the lines of "If our loved ones leave our world, it's not the end of the world. Someday, according to our wishes, our life will change." It was nice in the beginning. I really liked it when I first heard it but then it got repeated again and again by different characters. It was just overdone. Aside from this, the dialogues in the film were impressive and entertaining. There were lots of great comedy punches and very emotional romantic lines.

I was also very impressed with the cinematography and post- production work in a few scenes. There are a few mirror scenes in the film where John and Regina are getting ready in front of the mirror. In reality, they are doing one thing, but in their mind, they are doing something else which is shown in the mirror. So basically, they took two scenes and placed one into mirror. It was very nicely done.

I recommend the film for the interesting story line, great comedy especially by the most talented Santhanam and the wonderful performances of two South queens. If you've had love failure (who hasn't?!), you'll definitely enjoy this film. The film aims to teach a different way of thinking for people who have had love failure to continue their lives in a happy and constructive way.

I'll leave you with my favorite dialogue from the film, delivered by Santhanam to Arya: "John, if you think there is no life after losing your love… no one would be alive after 25 years."

Raja Rani - Kingdom well ruled inspiring 'old movies'
fredberglyle25 October 2013
The director deserves credit for giving the audience such a entertainer in his maiden movie itself. The actors did a creditable job. I loved Sathyaraj's characterization and pray god that parents are as cool n' cozy as him. Cuz, these days I read lot of girls/boys committing suicide from the papers. A huge assist by George Willy with his instrument for this movie. G.V's score is superb ( I loved Aarya's introduction bgm which lasted few seconds ). The songs which are few, quite entertaining I believe as we can expect more than one genre in each track (something uncommon in a Tamil movie).

There are two vital dislikes for 'me' in this and they are : (1) Sadly the movie is inspired from a couple of older movies (both from 80's- first one of Mohan's and other half Bhakiaraj's)... (2) IMO, scenes of irritating melodrama due to the fact "I" hate lasses love and people crying because of that. Sure, the director took some Johar's touch with the female actor's cry.

Good movie with good cast and crew

About directroy Atlee:

These days new directors are clearly knows, 1. what kind of scenes has to be avoided to make the movies neither good(super) nor bad(mokka). 2. And some the new directors even knows what are all the scenes they have to include in the movie to make the hit movie.

Atlee's success falls in these 2 categories and he perfectly delivered Raja rani with all of the success factors. Atlee is too good in pull the best out of the crew and he made admirable scenes in every frame. keep up the smart work.

Top list of cast's performance in Raja Rani: 1. Jai - Very fresh and new character in Tamil cinema 2. Nayanthara - Fantastic acting, especially in crying scenes. 3. Sathyaraj - Even his appearance is very short, he made his best.

At the whole it is a must watch movie.

Advice to director Atlee: if you reduce commercial elements in your next movie, definitely you will become the one the finest director in Indian cinema. And always don't follow your guru director Shankar to spend meaningless expense. Congrats to Atlee for giving us the wonderful movie.

There is life after love!
TharsheyN13 October 2022
Raja Rani took me by surprise. The characters all started out looking like idiots, Jai who plays Surya was crying in every scene and Arya who plays John was drunk in every other scene. Nayanthara and Nazriya both play amazing woman, both are strong, beautiful and know what they want. A good cast overall, though at the start you may feel like walking out the cinema with the pure ridiculousness, however it gets better.

The supporting cast however are all brilliant and Regina's father especially stands out. The relationship he has with his daughter is beautiful and his support for her is absolute throughout the movie.

Story wise I was looking forward to seeing how John and Regina grew to love one another after marriage, instead we just see them fight and snub one another 24/7. What happens next takes me by surprise, they jump into a flashback about Regina's past and the man who meant everything to her. It turned out to be the entire first half of the movie, the flashback that is. Then it's back to the present and soon after another flashback this time about John's past, which is the entire second half of the movie.

The story is interesting though I'd definitely have preferred much shorter flashbacks with more focus on the present, either way it still works pretty well.

The one thing I love about the story is the fact that a girl like Regina can be totally in love with a guy like Surya, she even made all the moves, I was frankly stunned watching it unfold. The reason I like it so much is because if Surya can have Regina fall in love with him, then there is hope for every other guy out there as well, including me.

The music is nice, but none of the songs really spoke to me during my viewing of the movie. May require some re-listening to get into them.

Male Actors & Acting: 5/10 (Their behavior was just ridiculous).

Female Actresses & Acting: Well deserved 9/10.

Supporting Cast: 8.5/10 (Regina's dad really stands out).

Storyline: 6/10 (Interesting but unexpected).

Music: 6/10 (Will update if it changes).

All in all a solid film, good cast, slightly questionable acting, good storyline and decent music. A well deserved 6/10 from me.

Mani Ratnam's classic tale of love after marriage, "Mouna Ragam," almost pulled down to an unbearable level.
SAMTHEBESTEST21 January 2023
Raja Rani (2013) : Brief Review -

Mani Ratnam's classic tale of love after marriage, "Mouna Ragam," almost pulled down to an unbearable level. I have seen many Mani Ratnam classics, and Mohan and Revathi's Mouna Ragam (1986) still beats many of them. The best use of the same 'love after marriage' theory was seen in Aditya Chopra's "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (2008), with the idea of dual personalities. Mouna Ragam still stands tall for the sophisticated results of love in its purest form. Atlee's Raja Rani adds the deaths of previous lovers to it and copy-pastes the rest of the formula blindly. What about the modern changes required for the film? I mean, how the heck can anybody show love in such a hasty form? Mouna Ragam takes time so that you can see where that feeling of love is actually generated, and moreover, it does not force the love from either of the sides. Here, Atlee pushed everything in the cheap comedy sector and literally destroyed the legacy and goodwill of Mani Ratnam's classic. Mouna Ragam was not fully original. It took inspiration from a couple of Hollywood flicks of the 1930s and a few Bengali/Hindi films of the 1950s (I am not sure if the Tamil or Telugu industries of the 50s or 60s had any references), but it forms a solid formula of love that stays in your mind and heart. Raja Rani starts off on a disastrous note because the character does not look convincing. What's more hurtful is that their earlier love lives weren't convincing either. How cheap those two stories looked. Something what we see in B-grade films. The married life is stretched for no reason, and yet it does not get enough time to create vibes. Arya, Jai, Nayanthara, and Nazriya Nazim's performances are somewhat tolerable, but half the time they act like they are acting in a low-grade, cheap comedy. Average music, scattered screenplay, and immature direction make Raja Rani a King Queen-sized mediocrity. Love deserves mature theories, not this.

RATING - 5/10*
