'Phineas and Ferb' "Druselsteinoween"/"Face Your Fear" (2013)

Opening thoughts: Absolutely loved the concepts for both "Druselsteinoween" and "Face Your Fear". Both are done justice and both are superb episodes in their own way. It's always great when villains are heavily focused on and both episodes show clear evidence that the writers were having the time of their lives with the character writing for Doofenschmirtz. Especially in the former, which delivers more on the atmosphere. Of course there is plenty to love about "Face Your Fear", but "Druselsteinoween" was pretty special for a late 'Phineas and Ferb' episode.

Bad things: Nothing.

Good things: Everything comes together beautifully. The animation is still vibrant with rich attention to detail in the visuql effecta and horror imagery. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to.

Furthermore, the writing is a triumph. The dialogue is sharp and intelligent, with plenty of laugh-out-loud lines and witty exchanges. The gags are many and they are beautifully timed and never less than very amusing, all without being too manic or lacking in breathing space. Doofenschmirtz is a joy in both segments but especially in "Druselsteinoween", which has the right amount of spooky atmosphere and fun (both done brilliantly individually too).

Both capture the Halloween spirit wonderfully, with a genuinely spooky horror atmosphere that was both nostalgic and unsettling in "Face Your Fear". It is always nice to see the father-daughter relationship between Doofenschmirtz and Vanessa, and Vanessa's role here is easy to relate to.

Moreover, both settings are handled with great affection and it did feel like everybody involved was having a lot of fun. Although 'Phineas and Ferb' tends to follow a formula, there is a lot of variety and imagination that it doesn't feel formulaic. Was expecting to not be that interested in the Candace subplot in "Face Your Fear", but that was nicely done if not as inspired as everything else. The character writing and interaction are pretty much perfect,. Likewise with the voice acting, Dan Povenmire is in his element.

Concluding thoughts: All in all, brilliant.

10/10.
