Fine enough. Could have been better

Is this the first episode where they really start to just destroy the Alex character?

She has always been "her"...the smart one, not the...whatever you want to say...hot, cool, fun, etc etc. Whatever.

There is a point in the show where it stops being just who she is...and they annoyingly turn it up to 11. They end up doing that with everyone. Instead of things just being part of who the character is...that basically becomes the overwhelming thing about the character.

Is this the moment? Is the opening scene where they play it up too big and MF becomes/starts to become unenjoyable?

I don't know if that scene was the beginning of the end...or a song of what's to come?

I don't know at what point the show jumps the shark...but there must be hints of it preceding that point.

I'm almost to season 6...so I know it starts to get really bumpy. I dont know which episode the wheels come completely off.

I'm sure there are low episodes that the show is able to recover from. But at some point it does stop being a good show with a few bad episodes to a bad show with a few good episodes. I don't know where that point is. Is it coming soon?

Love me some Andrew Daly.

Eisenberg is plays his role excellently.

Krakowski is so annoying. Not sure what's more annoying...the character or the actress.

Fun interaction with with Phil and Jay.

God, Alex is annoying.

Cried my eyes out
simoneblue6 April 2021
I am a lot like Alex, in mind and personality. I graduated last year, and I experienced everything she was going through in my last few years. I always felt like no one understood how much stress I was under, and only judged me for my failures. I'm in the middle of my gap year now, and I'm terrified of going back to school because I was constantly stressed, but I'm also hating not being in school because already I feel stupider. And apparently stress can lower your IQ, so I'm stressed that my stress made me dumber. Suffice to say, I have never seen a tv show that so accurately portrayed the feelings of being a high schooler; it's not the stereotypical depiction of a girl who is popular, dates boys, hates sports, does phenomenal things, all while never studying once and graduating with a 4.0. This is the first time I've ever thought the stress of high school was so perfectly represented on screen. Ariel Winter is a phenomenal actress to embody this character so well. I cried because I've felt Alex's pain, and it made me want to hug her. I didn't expect a comedy to make me cry so hard, but it's 100% worth it.

Pressure and High School Open
Myselfrench7 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
What a wonderful episode ! Since i always wanted to see an Alex birthday episode, my wish was fulfilled. The episode so, takes place in the night (the first scene). The whole family (minus Lilly) observe Alex's behavior as she is going to celebrate her 16th birthday. Alex is remorseful and decides to see a therapist where she learns more about herself and finally lets her anger go by crying and hugging her mother. Speaking of Claire, she attends like other parents, to the high school open house. She discovers how much Alex is stressed, being the middle child and the only responsible member of the Dunphy Family.

Jay wanted to give his son -in-law, Phil a lesson, by tricking him with an alcohol bottle. He also encouraged him to skip school by going to the teacher lounge. They finally bond while watching a football game. Of course, there was a drawback when the screen burned. Gloria had no luck. She wanted to impress a mean mother whose son shared a past with Manny. The finally settled their differences, not without a big fight. And Cameron was'not much better, i was glad too see that beginning with fifth season, he switched his musical hat for a coach status. But the principal refused too see him practice dodge-ball, a decision he could'not accept.

Manny and Luke met twins who were interested by them. But since they were dating the wrong twin, they suggest they could switch but they learned that Manny's girl is attracted to Luke and vice-versa, because of stereotypical clichés. They finally flirted with girls.

Back at his house, Mitchell was the only one not to attend the open high school house. Naturally, because he was the only one among the adults to not have a child in high school or not to be a teacher. But he has his nemesis as well : His neighbor Asher, an environmentalist judge who was obsessed with ecology. It did not prevent Lilly from saying that Asher's garden looked like a litter cat. Haley made later a surprise for her cousin, by bringing her a doll house (which was also Mitchell's). However, problems began when the Styrofoams peanuts blew in Asher's yard.

Fantastic Episode

Warning: Spoilers
All the plot lines in this episode were so good and Alex's storyline was done so well. With the scenes with the therapist, it was just really great and felt real. The parents at school at the open house was hilarious and made me laugh a lot especially with Phil and Jay. Manny and Luke's plot was smaller but still pretty funny with the way it ended. I loved how the episode ended with Alex hugging her mom after her mom realizes that she is under so much pressure because especially being a high school student, it's a lot of work. And sometimes meltdowns happen and that's normal and that's why this episode was so good. It takes a very real subject and applies it and it works.
