While the cancer reveal is leading to April being babied at home, it seems Leo looks to make life a bit better for her.

Warning: Spoilers
In the episode we see Sara go full-throttle with her worrying about April's life and we get to fully understand why April was cautious and didn't want to tell her mom. For with every overbearing action Sara does, she walks that thin line of being unlikeable and understandable. After all, Sara lost her husband in a tragic car accident and now her daughter is potentially going to go through a tragic slow death. But, while April deals with her mom's overbearing ways, there is also Brenna who still seems stuck between Kieran and Greer. More on that below.

Topic 1: Bad Timing - Brenna

When I watch Brenna and Greer, I see an ideal relationship showing two girls falling in love. However, due to Kieran we don't get to see Brenna slowly grow comfortable being with Greer. Instead, because this is an ABC Family show which means eventually a love triangle had to be made, we watch Brenna try to juggle two people's feelings. On one side you have Kieran, who is talking about dating, and on the other side you have Greer who is still trying to figure Brenna out.

I should note though, Greer is well aware of Kieran's position in Brenna's life. Yet, I think she may see Kieran as a non-threat. Almost like Brenna is with Kieran because that is easy and something comfortable. Meanwhile, as Greer seems like she is slowly wiggling into Brenna's heart, Kieran seems to have access to her physically, but is still unable to get Brenna to connect as well as commit. For with them making out, holding hands and all that, while others think they are boyfriend and girlfriend, they themselves have not defined the relationship yet. And really, while Kieran seems nice and all, he has thus far shown he isn't the best choice to come to with a serious matter, and then in this episode he acts like a tool. How you may ask? Well, when Brenna's friend invites him to Greer's environment party, he decides to take Brenna to Greer's room and make out with her on Greer's bed. Something so disrespectful that if this wasn't ABC Family, I would have thought it would have been perfectly fine for Greer to start cursing up a storm upon catching them in the act.

Topic 2: It's What Mothers Do – Sara & April

As should be expected from a widow who fears losing another person in her life, Sara goes overboard when it comes to April's health. In fact, she is stifling. She goes on a binge and begins throwing out April's room furniture for organic furniture, which I didn't know existed, and she decides to start covering stuff in her room with plastic while the rest of the house remains the same. Then she gets rid of any food that can be considered unhealthy, like frozen waffles, just to find whatever way she can to make April better.

Mind you, as she does this you are given this weird mix of understanding why she is doing this but disliking her methods. Especially the major one of the episode which deals with her asking George not to tell April chemo treatments can make her infertile. Why? Well with April continuously delaying appointments so she can further herself at work, imagine learning that chemo not only will lead her to becoming sick, losing her hair, and feeling less beautiful but also, as April notes, taking away one of her reasons to live.

Topic 3: Live While You Can – April & Leo

But while April is having trouble dealing with her mother and what chemo can do to her future, her career is taking off. For with Leo feeling guilty about the double-cross he throws April a bone and allows her access to him and his family. With this she sees the dysfunctional Hendrie family up close and personal. She watches as Leo says snide remarks to his father, act like a spoiled brat, and yet seems to be preparing to battle it out with Beth as perhaps one of the closest persons to her.

For with him having cancer, being a bit of a bad boy, as well as being able to further her career, it makes him very likable. And while he flirts with her, I figured they would just be good friends. However, with me seeing their Facebook page start that whole #team nonsense, I guess, like with Brenna's situation, they are going to present one good relationship versus another which is beneficial, but shouldn't be romantic.

Though, from what we learn, like Leo's cancer being terminal, I think he can bring a lot of heart to the story. Which will lead to depressing stories, and certainly will create a morose mood, but whether it foreshadows what is to come or simply acts as a worst case scenario, it is hard not to see the worth of Leo in the grand scheme of things. I just hope though that April doesn't fall for his charms.

Real Gem on Hulu

Great story, superb cast and acting (Ricci and Keller are terrific), surprisingly addictive, real life type story. Well directed. One of those gems you find on cable that wasn't heavily promoted. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
