So weak!
subxerogravity9 November 2015
The movie was very dull and very boring, so boring. It was like watching paint dry, but that might be more entertaining.

I was expecting a murder mystery from the description. Then as soon as the movie comes on, I realized it was one of those urban movies that I watch on bounceTV late at night while trying to doze off. This is not an insult to those movies as some of them are really good, but this movie was just really bad.

In its effort to be creative with the story telling, it miss the mark by a large margin. The movie was about a man moving into a Queens Apartment complex and really shakes up the lives of everyone living there. Trying to be inventive with the narrative, only made the film feel inconsistent, like there were missing parts and loopholes I missed.

Not that it really matter. I've seen most of the members of this ensemble cast in other films, including other Urban dramas, and seen them do a better job with the acting. I think it was just too much going on in the movie and it was handled badly.

Waste of time at the movies.

Very disappointing
chanelcbrown16 November 2015
I had not seen any promotions for this movie before going into it so I had no real expectations for it. I knew once the movie started off however that it was going to be bad. I could tell the film had quite a low budget and honestly the storyline was just not that great and a little bit predictable. The characters were not that well developed and overall it was just horrible.

The only redeeming quality of this movie was the number of attractive men in the film, which was the only reason that I kept watching. Unless you have a free movie pass or you are part of a movie club like MoviePass, I would not recommend spending money on this film.

The Ending Blew The Whole THING!
DeidraKali13 March 2017
I sat and watched this movie one day after flipping past it every other time it constantly aired on cable TV. Everything about it was okay, except the stoop ladies and the sex scenes. I laughed at some parts and it kept my attention, but then came the inevitable ending. That's what blew the whole thing to me. I have never heard of this movie's director and I've never read the book this movie is based on, but the ending was horrible. They tried to do flashes and jump cuts between scenes and characters to wrap up the story. Bad idea! They didn't execute right and the ending was idiotic and just contrived and made the whole movie a waste of time to sit through. I would have been so heated if I had gone to see this in the theater. Mess!

I want a divorce
nogodnomasters28 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Daryl Graham (Lamman Rucker) has just moved into Queens apartment 3B. There is a lot of gossip on the steps by the ladies who live there. Daryl is refined, educated and a former "respected" gang member. He tries to be a friend to everyone, calmly resolving problems. The issues range from infidelity, drug use, divorce, gay, and did I mention a manipulative ex-girlfriend? Oh yea. A gangster.

The characters were nearly all likable, even the antagonists. The twist raises some questions, try not to think too deep about forensics, or other plot points. Easy film to watch.

Guide: F-word. sex. no nudity.

The weight of the web of everyone's shared secrets begin to bend and potentially break thanks to one man. To the point he becomes a weight some can't continue to bear.

Warning: Spoilers
Main Storyline (with Commentary)

Darryl Graham, after living a life as a gang banger, is trying to get his life together. He thought he had himself a nice thing going with Krystal, but being that she got another man, who seems to not have a record, Darryl is just a side–piece. So, because of that, he leaves her alone. In his new place though there is Connie. A wife whose husband Avery, is trifling in a multitude of ways. Now, Darryl digs Connie, and she digs him too, but being that Avery is still her husband, there is a problem.

That ain't the only one, though. Ben Jr., a young kid, barely 21, but in college, is not that close with his dad Ben Sr. Part of the reason is he gets kicked out daily because Ben Sr. is the mistress of some married woman in the building. On top of that, Ben Jr. got a secret. One he thinks Darryl shares. Though the big to do of this movie is the fact a dead body, killed due to a fire, gets rolled out the building. All signs point to one person being dead, but the question comes: Who killed them and why?

Commentary

Though I know it isn't politically correct to say, I was ready to write this off as another $1 store bargain bin hood movie. The type which seemed to throw a bunch of Black B-list actors all in one film and between excessiveness of the performances to a mediocre story-line, I honestly wondered if I would even finish this movie. Well, let me just say I need to reevaluate the stereotypes I place on Black majority movies because this movie put me through it.

Now, let me just state, when I say "put me through it" I don't mean this had me in tears. However, I was certainly not expecting to laugh, be shocked, and witness so many compelling twists. I mean, the amount of secrets packed into this hour and a half movie could have been 2- 3 seasons of a show, if handled right. To just give you an idea of what goes on, I want you to imagine the drama and twists of a full night of Shondaland programming combined with what FreeForm has for their Monday and Tuesday scripted lineup. Keeping in mind, what is in this movie isn't done for simple shock value. Yes, some twists feel out of nowhere, but with time you realize they make quite a bit of sense. And I think the best way to show how much I like this movie is because, for one, I'm skirting around spoiling it too much, and two, it is because I really want people to see it. Genuinely.

Movie Highlights

For a movie which is around an hour and a half, the fact it can pull a compelling, and believable, twist damn near every 10 to 15 minutes was something. It is like, when I took a film theory class they spoke of pacing and how the ebb and flow goes in a script. With this film, it is like just as soon as you may start to get relaxed, feel like it is giving you a break to settle with that last shock, it hits you with another one. Which I so badly want to write in here because it is hard to not want to share some of the jaw-dropping moments.

Also, you have to admire how they crafted the relationships in the movie. No one is focused on enough to be a definitive lead, besides Rucker, and yet it is with little details that you feel like you know more than you actually do. Thus constantly there is a setup for a surprise. Let me use an example, without ruining too much. Let's take Krystal for example. One little twist with her deals with her relationship with Darryl and this other guy. Which is a small part of the puzzle which goes with who her father is, and then something else which I don't want to spoil. What I'm trying to say is, this movie is a murder mystery which your perceptions may not lead you to take seriously, but writer Carl Weber took this for damn sure serious. Hence why crumbs are left everywhere and if you aren't paying attention, you don't even notice the multiple rats running around.

Low Points

Honestly, the only part which sort of made me roll my eyes were the sex scenes. The majority of which star Crystal, outside of one with Connie and Avery. They, to me, I understood their place in showing Connie still wanted to reconcile with her husband, and that Crystal was… something I'm not going to say. But compared to all the interesting things which happen in this movie, honestly, I just felt like rolling my eyes.

On The Fence

The ladies of the stoop, of which Jackeé Harry is the leader, as well as the one scene Marla Gibbs has, are comic relief scenes. Now, because I like these two actresses, and they are funny, I was glad they were there, but at the same time with the tone and what happens in this movie, they stick out like sore thumbs.

Why, oh Why make this film?
notom-230122 August 2016
I failed and fail to see the point of this film...

It's relentlessly boring from start to finish. The acting, dialogue, production and direction are well below par - with one, minor exception: Nafessa Williams who plays Krystal. The rest of the cast may has well have been absent and their attempts replaced with boards and voice overs.

All of the above aside... if I, as a Producer or Director, were to insist upon a 'All White Cast' - I'd be branded a racist... if you want tolerance, show it!

Oh look, another Black crime thriller...
dawb-4089729 February 2024
The plot, the ending in particular, is VERY contrived. The main (title) character has no real dramatic purpose and isn't much of a compelling figure. The creators were aiming to craft a crime-thriller but the director isn't skilled enough at establishing tone to make the whole affair feel like anything more than melodrama. Acting is so-so, which always upsets me in films that bring so many talented performers together. I put this on the director as more skillful ones bring the best out of their cast, something this one clearly could not. D. B. Woodside and Kellita Smith as the police detectives are the most believable in their roles. On the technical side, it's shot well enough but the editing in terms of cutting from scene-to-scene is almost student-level at times. Again, more than anything I just wish filmmakers that are able to assemble this much onscreen talent could match it with better writing/direction. Not the worst film you'll ever see but nowhere near one that could be classified as "good/quality."

Looking forward to more!

4.2 average rating?

I thought this movie was great! The plot was fun at times, and serious when it needed to be. It made the best out of its low budget.

Two things I liked about it:

1. Darryl's relationships with the other characters were completely believable.

2. The atmosphere was perfect for what it was aiming for.

The only "over the top" scenes were the sex scenes, honestly. Besides that, it's a 10 out of 10.

Definitely a must see if you're a fan of Carl Weber or not.

I do not get how this movie didn't get at least a six or a seven

Warning: Spoilers
I do not get how this movie didn't get at least a six or a seven, this movie had some great characters and they kind of kept you on the edge and that just shows you how black movies do not get the reviews that they deserve I give it a nine easy there was only one "corney part" (spoiler later) that's the scuffle outside on the sidewalk other than that it was a great movie.
